Verizon lays out upcoming smartphone lineup; Samsung i760 comes first
No surprises in the mix here, but we're delighted to see that Verizon is finally getting official with four smart devices that have been rumored to be in its pipeline for ages. Of the four, only the i760 from Samsung's been priced and slated for release -- October 19 online, November 2 in stores for $350 on contract after rebates -- featuring Windows Mobile 6 Professional, QWERTY slide-out and offset numeric keypads, and a 1.3 megapixel camera. The XV6800 succeeds the tired XV6700, going up against Sprint's Mogul by offering the HTC Titan reference design in a custom Verizon skin; it shows up with a 2 megapixel cam, WiFi, and a full QWERTY keyboard. Already released on several CDMA carriers, the HTC Libra sees the light of day on Verizon as the SMT5800 bearing Windows Mobile 6 Standard and a 2 megapixel cam (we loved the Libra's GSM cousin, and we're guessing this one's great too). Finally, make some noise, Palm OS fans -- it's okay, don't be shy! Verizon finally gets down with the Treo 755p, a phone that could ultimately serve as the platform's swan song in the classic Treo form factor. As we mentioned, only the i760 has been priced and dated at this point, but we'll keep ya in the loop just as soon as we know more.

Well that definitely took forever. Especially the Treo. I would have loved it a year ago.

They took too long for me. I got tired of waiting for Verizon to quit sitting on their hands, (been waiting since May when my contract expired). I got tired of waiting and switched to AT&T and picked up the Tilt. I'm very happy.

How is Verizon getting official with these four phones when they've announced dates only for one??... Where's the official news for the other three?
Zoundguy @ Oct 18th 2007 11:18AM
I know what I will be doing tomorrow afternoon... sigh, its take long enough :-(

Xv6800! extensive testing? if so, then why Verizon downgrade the memory(256MB,128MB - 256MB,64MB) and cpu(400MHZ - 384MHZ) and camera(3.0 - 2.0) down to floor away from the TILT. I hope we would have a law here to obligate carriers to unlock phones like France does. they downgrade to save money(cheaper chipsets are less money) and make more profit rather than make customers happy. they should sell the phone $99, shouldn't they?

Isn't the XV6800 equivalent to the TyTN ONE - a year old now? Verizon into competing with year old hardware now (XV6800/Treo 755p) ?
PhilR8 @ Oct 18th 2007 11:35AM
CDMA and GSM devices are not the same. The 6800 is a step above the TyTn/8525, but a step below the Tilt.
The i760, however, is pretty much old news. Not Samsungs fault - this device coulda been released last March if Verizon wanted to.

@PhilR8
Releasing the I760 in March would have been quite an accomplishment since Windows Mobile 6 didnt get released until June. Yeah you don't know what you are talking about, if it would have been ready earlier it would have been released earlier.

Those phones are all fine and dandy but when is the Motorola Q9c being released- the last blurb about these impending PDA phones from Verizon included the Q9c and now there's no mention of it or a release date? I am becoming increasingly frustrated with Verizon and their poor phone selection.
weasldude @ Oct 19th 2007 1:27AM
Q9c pushed to 08 due to issues with navigation and another part of testing, as far as I know

people will never stop complaining
bob.autrey @ Oct 18th 2007 7:05PM
Uh, people have the right to complain. That's part of what the discussion forums are for. That's like saying people in church will never stop praying. Why are YOU here?
Hex @ Oct 18th 2007 8:31PM
It's about time, I've been looking forward to the i760 for quite a while now.

Yes, verizon does lack in the smartphone category but the true test is wifi + WM6. Any of the phones they release NOW without these two features are just not worth it. My vote is for the Samsung.
t-pain @ Oct 19th 2007 2:39AM
yeah... I'm not a big fan of the look of the Samsung... I'm looking for a smartphone but I'm not impressed by Verizon's impending releases. I really hope they unveil something special and soon.

Has anyone seen the new Samsung i780? It has so much more things and will come out for at&t soon. Why cant verizon get these new phones when they come out. I saw the Samsung i760 came out in january.
theinspiringdesigns @ Oct 20th 2007 9:32PM
Has anyone seen the Samsung i780 that will come out for at&t soon? It's so much better the the Samsung i760. i don't understand why verizon has to always come out with old smartphones the Samsung i760 was made in january.
Tigran @ Oct 23rd 2007 3:40AM
I just got my i760 in the mail, and it really sucks. The answer call button slides the keypad open, and i cant get youtube to freakin work.

4 years ago I bought a Samsung SPH-i700 and have been waiting for an equivalent ever since. What is with all thes tiny displays on these phones? Can't they get even one 3.5" screen smartphone, running any Windows PDA OS, and keep it down to .6" thick? Friggin frustrating!!! They need to clean house in the Product Development department. They are just hopelessly out of touch.
kimberely @ Dec 8th 2007 10:06PM
when is the smt5800 coming out????
it is december already. i have the voyager and i hate it! i need to return it by dec 20th. since getting the voyager and being disgusted with the software (its all verizon vcast) i've been doing my research and reading lots on this site....
the samsung is just tooo ugly. i had a bad feeling about the xv6800 and i hear the actually phone quality is poor, plus its too expensive. i've only heard bad things about treos from treo owners so that means smt5800 is for me!
does anyone else have opinions on which of these phones is best.
