We've been hearing rumors of these handsets for a while and true to its
quick release nature, Telus launched EV-DO rev. A upgradeable (from left) HTC P3050 Touch (
HTC Vogue) and the HTC S640 (
HTC Iris) in the Canadian market this morning. The P3050 is the CDMA equivalent of the GSM Touch and packs the same goodies under the shell including Windows Mobile 6, The lovely
TouchFLO UI, 320 x 240 display, Bluetooth, and sadly doesn't pack WiFi or the GPS we had hoped for. This fella is in the shops as of today from CAD $499 off contract to CAD $149 on a 3 year stint. The
S640 is the CDMA flavor of the Cavalier and Excalibur, packs Windows Mobile 6, Bluetooth, WiFi, and eschews all that touchscreen goodness for a good ol' fashioned keypad. Pricing is set from CAD $449 off contract to CAD $149 on a 3 year contract. Things are rocking north of the border for the EV-DO crowd, so here's hoping they land here soon, and yes, we're looking at you Sprint and Verizon.

The HTC S640 looks like an ugly version of the Treo 500w.
It better be *really* thin.

The manual says it has a GPS chip and internal GPS antenna, which can be enabled for location-based services from the carrier. Maybe the hackers up north can free it for everyone else's use.

Allow the mobile phone network to detect your current location via your devices built-in GPS chip. This is especially useful in times of emergency.

The canadian data plans make it impossible to really use one of those phones. Without Wifi there is no way anyone will browse the web with these things. Unless of course you don't mind paying 500$ of data charges.

ok, what is up with this...
On the HTC website
http://www.america.htc.com/products/s640/features-specs.html
this unit is listed as "WM6 Professional with Touchscreen"??? HUH??? It is also listed on their site under "Sliding QWERTY" (which it obviously is NOT) and not "Traditional QWERTY" (which it obviously IS). Where has is it all gone wrong??? I think HTC must have listed it incorrectly especially since it is on the Telus website as a WM6 Standard handset.

Is this the phone I've been waiting for to compete with the iphone? This is why I've been holding on to Sprint, instead of switching to AT&T for the Iphone.......

Warning:
Telus mobility is spying on it's customer computers who are
buying music online from Telus, without being informed. if you have
a LG8100 and upgrade the phone software version, most probably the
Media player wouldn't work and it is because of Telus system not the
LG.
