The
rumors are true: iPhone exclusively on T-Mobile Germany starting November 9th just like in the UK. The 8GB model will go for €399 (including V.A.T and 2-year T-Mobile tariff) and will be sold through Telekom Shops of Deutsche Telekom and the T-Mobile web shop. Yes, you still get access to the WiFi iTunes Store, Visual Voicemail, and, for
better or worse, EDGE data. In fact, "by the end of 2007," T-Mobile will be the only provider in Germany to offer EDGE throughout it's GSM network. Whoopee. Sorry, no mention of unlimited data or free WiFi hotspots but we'll update you as soon as we know.
[Thanks, Lars, Rahul B. and everyone who sent this in]

Well, I guess this at least makes downloading emails a little quicker when I'm roaming in Germany with my Blackberry . . . That's about the only relevance I see to me . . .

surrously... stop harping on EDGE.. its really not that bad. I would rather have a longer battery life to enjoy the device rather than a quicker burst of download speed.

Edge is not "bad"... It's just obsolete and slower than the other.
So having a carrier to deploy an already-obsolete technology doesnt make much sense.
If it deal was about the battery life, then why suggesting people to use Wifi ??? 3G is using less power than any wifi adaptor.
greg @ Sep 19th 2007 2:51PM
right but you're not using wifi all the time.
its a good combination until batteries catch up.

@GREG above --> QUIT DRINKING THE COOL-AID.
Im sick of all the Apple apologists on this issue! It's TOTAL CRAP. Have all the people saying how great EDGE is actually used a proper 3G phone? With the amount of already existing battery tech Apple has access to (think about the battery life improvements in the iPods) Apple could have easily put a 3G radio in the iPhone. Who really needs 8 hours of talk time A DAY? Even with a a few hours shorter battery life, I would still take the "UMTS/HSDPA" version in a heartbeat. I think the only reason other than Apple knows they can get people to buy it anyways and then sell them a faster one later, may be because the less battery life leads to more charging which leads to faster battery wear. And they know how well that would go over when they don't make it user replaceable.
And to prove my point of Jobs over-hyping the 3G battery life issue, check out this list.. and these are CNET.com TESTED TIMES not reported times (which strangely are actually alot higher than manufacturer-specified battery life). (And don't say "but its so thin.." too bad - add 3 millimeters to the battery and be done with it.

Not really a good solution for Australia though, eventually. Only Telstra has an EDGE network, and they have claimed not to want the iPhone. Vodafone and Optus have spent so much money promoting their HSPDA network i don't see them adding EDGE just for the iPhone. And 3 is totally unable to use the iPhone because they have no GSM network, only HSDPA.
So we would get GPRS, AND wifi hotspots here are few and far between.
