2009 may be the year when we finally see a unified memory format, that is, if
Nokia,
Samsung, and
Sony Ericsson have their way. The "Universal Flash Storage specification" would see memory cards travel between cellular devices, digital cameras and other memory hungry devices without the need for adapters -- and it'll likely save us some coin, too. Some big name memory manufacturers are purportedly onboard, with names like Micron Technology Inc., Spansion LLC, STMicroelectronics NV, and Texas Instruments Inc., being bandied about. We look forward to that magical day, when our stacks of
memory cards can be reduced to a stack of one type of card, ahhh... progress.

We do have a unified memorycard standard it's MicroSD and now with SDHC it supports up to 32GB. MicroSD can be fit in MiniSD adapters and well as standard SD adapters. The most annoying aspect of SE phones is the fact they have their own proprietary Memory Stick format.

I agree with ShortFuse, microSD is perfectly fine, just as mini usb is catching on as well. No need to muck it up with another format.
And I can't believe Sony is on board.

Any you know Sony wants their memory stick to be the choice with how power hungry they are with proprietary formats.

I think Sony realizes now that Memory Stick (blank) isn't going to fly much longer. Heck, their new flagship handset (the k850) does microSD + m2 - can't be long until they go microSD only.

enough with the standards!

We need a standard.

Only want one standard

Wow! I can't wait for "Universal Flash Storage". Then we can look forward to Universal Flash Storage Mini, Universal Flash Storage Micro, Universal Flash Storage Duo, Universal Flash Storage Ultra, Universal Flash Storage Pro, Universal Flash Storage II, and Universal Flash Storage HC. This should really help unify everything. :-\
