Is this the Motorola MOTOROKR E7?
Kinda looks like a Photoshopped E6 to us, but Chinese site ZOL is touting this bad boy as the MOTOROKR E7 with a very impressive set of specs. Like, unrealistically impressive -- especially for a phone that looks virtually indistinguishable from the far less impressive E6: VGA touchscreen, 5 megapixel cam with xenon flash, integrated GPS and WiFi, 2GB of integrated storage, HSDPA, you get the idea. If legit, the device will apparently be powered by Linux -- Moto's MOTOMAGX platform, we imagine -- the very same one that we've heard can't presently handle HSDPA speeds. So needless to say, we're skeptical here; hopeful that Moto really does have something this hot up its sleeves, yes, but until we get more confirmation, skeptical.

Dude Chris you got the specs wrong. It's 16GB of storage and you forgot to mention the processor is 1ghz with 256 RAM. Jeez, get with the PROGRAM!
Chris Ziegler @ Sep 7th 2007 12:14PM
Well, first of all, we aren't going to relay every single line item of the spec sheet in a situation like this -- that's what the Read link is for. Secondly, I'm not seeing the 16GB of internal storage, rather 2GB plus SDHC expansion. Are you seeing differently?

i would assume they would keep the back flat and the camera receded probably of the pinhole variation of camera with very little in the way of options. it will still be of a lower quality compared to nokia, samsung & sony.

My friend has a Mto ROKR E6 and i love that. It would be hard to beat it.
boolean22 @ Sep 7th 2007 8:39AM
Say what you say, but if this thingy is real, my gosh. My ROKR E2 CAN OC to 614Mhz out of its xScale Processor. That of course kills the battery, but a hell of a snes emulation you get, bro!
The OS is HIGHLY hackable. You can even put quadband if needed, change the typeface for any truetype font of your liking. It's sick!
Also, I think that MOTOMAGX (Juix) must be the only Phone OS that allows you to use the phone for calling and "texting" while you keep the phone connected to a PC/Mac in USB Memory mode... God I love it.

Motorola multimedia wonder coming?
28-08-2007: Motorola's multimedia wonder, as the ROKR E7 is already named, shows her face more often in the rumour circuit. The launch of this device is probably not far away anymore.
Door: Willeke de Haas
In the middle of May this year, all eyes in the telecomworld were focussed on the American Motorola. The company organized a gigantic pressconference in London and everything indicated that the American Motorola was to present something beautiful. The entire telecomworld expected an answer to the multimedia monsters of Nokia, in the shape of the N95, and of the Apple iPhone. However, the press conference turned out to be a presentation of, again, a follower in the RAZR series and the devastation was sensed with many. Several reactions indicated that the huge press conference was a little too big for the presentation of only a RAZR follower.
After the press conference, some initiates said that Motorola decided to cancel the announcement of the real multimedia monster just before the press conference, this because the device was not finished yet. The rumours and details of this device, what should have been announced already, are becoming clearer the last few days.
Is this the Motorola ROKR E7?
The Motorola ROKR E7, as the device will probably be named, is the answer to the Nokia N95 according to some insiders. The Motorola ROKR E7 would make the Apple iPhone vanish into dust. When looking at the specifications of the device it becomes clear that the Motorola ROKR E7 indeed is not just a phone.
Really advanced display
The first thing that cathces our eye is the extremely large 2.8 inch display. This TFT display offers 16 million colours and has a VGA resolution (480 x 640 pixels). With this, the Motorola ROKR E7 would have the most advanced display of all devices on the market and leaves the Nokia N95 and Apple iPhone far behind.
Advanced network support
When concerning network support and connection possibilties, the device is also a big player on the market. The device is a 3G number one player due to its support of EDGE, UMTS and the fast HSDPA. On top of this, the device would support HSDPA speeds up to 3.6 Mbit per second. Besides its 3G functionality, the device offers quad-band support for the usage of almost all types of GSM networks.
For communication besides the GSM network, the device is also equipped with WiFi support, a USB 2.0 port and bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP. Internet promises to be an absolute pleasure, this because the Motorola ROKR E7 is equipped with the Opera 8 webbrowser.
Monstrous multimedia functionality
The Motorola ROKR E7 is also a big player on the multimedia area. The device is equipped with a 5 megapixel camera which is manufactured by the eminent camera producer Kodak. Furthermore, the camera is equipped with Xenon flash with which Motorola leaves behind the time of the LED lights. The high-quality photos that the device can make can be stored onto the impressive internal memory of 2 gigabyte.
Might the 2 gigabyte internal memory not be sufficient for the real multimedia lover, it can also be expanded with SD High Capacity memorycards up to 32 gigabyte. If we add the support of almost all music files to this fact than we can conclude that even the best musicplayer will not even come close to this device. Besides all this, the device also offers a stereo FM radio with RDS.
Built-in videocard and GPS
The Motorola ROKR E7 is equipped with a Nvidia GoForce S500 videocard, one of the first videocards for the mobile phone. The videocard guarantees a perfect view with games, videos and applications in a way at which no other phone is comparable. In order to compete with the Nokia N95, a GPS receiver is also embedded in the Motorola ROKR E7. If navigation applications will also be delivered with the device is unclear.
Everything very compact
The size of the Motorola ROKR E7 is very good. With only 14 millimeters wide, 10.1 centimers long and 4.7 millimeters thick, the device will be more compact than the Apple iPhone bit it has so much more to offer. Furthermore, the device is, despite of everything it can do, quite light with only 112 grams.
Are tese expanded rumours, as critics indicate at several spots, too good to be true? Or will this multimedia monster really see daylight in the upcoming months? The future will tell. Fact is that if these expanded rumours indeed turn out to be reailty, Motorola returns to the telecommarket in only one day.

Thanks guys for the info. I have an A1200 and though I enjoy it a lot, the lack of 3G makes it just a secondary phone. I don't know. I love the phone and the since it's linux, neat hacks come out all the time but I told myself my next phone will need to have the following:
640x480+, HSDPA, GPS, Touchscreen
And WM6. The WM6 is the problem. I want the ability to edit word and excel docs, Remote Desktop Connection, pcAnywhere.
But 5megapixel camera and microSDHC. I don't know!!! Now between it's between this and the eten x800. If a newer version of the A1200 with 3G comes out then it'll get even harder to choose.

MotoMania:
Good article. The only thing is the dimensions. With the units given, the phone would be the size of a Bic lighter.
Regardless, it is an impressive phone. The Boy genius has confirmed that a phone with these specs will be released, though the pic of the phone probably isn't real.
raulr @ Sep 7th 2007 11:55AM
Though Moto's Linux-Java platform is currently not running on their 3G chipsets (not speeds as stated above), there is no doubt they are working on it. It's a new OS. They'll eventually optimize it for their other platforms (WCDMA, CDMA-EVDO, WiMax).
Smiley @ Sep 7th 2007 11:58AM
I do have an E6 on my desk right here, along with an older E680. A few remarks based on my high-tech skill known as "common sense":
FORM FACTOR: the pic is just showing an E6 with the screen expanded onto its bezel. Because we all know that an LCD screen doesn't need a frame at all (frame on pic would be ~2mm. The E6 is not a large phone). I call BS.
SIZE: The E6 is 51mm wide. Even if you do swallow the "frameless LCD" bit, that still means fitting a VGA screen into something *51mm wide* (or even 47mm according to the Flying Motosmoker above). That's not just technically difficult, it's simply stupid: the DPI would be way too high, you would have to zoom everything in, and in effect use it like a 400x300 screen. It would be useless. a PDA/phone would need to be at the very (very) least as large as the iPhone to make sense.
COST: The ROKR and Linux E-series phones are low-to-mid end devices. The E680 was impressive by 2004's standards, but in 2007 and with mostly identical specs, the E6 is definitely closer to low-end (it cost me 250 eurobucks imported from HK. Local price is probably between 150 and 200). Why would Motorola suddenly decide to churn out a high-end and costly phone ?
TIMING: The ROKR E6 as been released during, what, Q4 2006 ? For all of Asia, it was probably not available before the end of Q1/2007 (I seem to have read that somewhere). It is far from EOL. Actually it's selling pretty well from what I've heard. Starting a E7 right now, especially an E7 so radically different from its predecessors, would be a bit too soon, no ? And we all know how "quick" Motorola is...
THE LITTLE VOICE IN MY HEAR is saying: "Dude, on your co-worker's desk right now there is an U9, a V8, a L9. Seriously, if Moto was developing a new killer phone, wouldn't you have at least heard of it ?". My take on this is: There will be a phone with these specs, but not anytime "soon" (price would be too high), much larger (more like the A1000, if not bigger), and probably not with the ROKR branding.
Ho, and maybe not by Motorola (Face it: the other Big Four are much more likely to release something like that before Motorola).
ENGADGET: When your readers comments are more informative than your own posts, there's something wrong with you.
Chris Ziegler @ Sep 7th 2007 12:09PM
What are you talking about? What information did I fail to provide in the post that I should have? We're simply relaying a rumor along with a picture and identifying the picture as unrealistic.
Chris
Smiley @ Sep 7th 2007 2:04PM
I didn't say you failed to report. I said you failed to be informative. Being informative means tracking the source of your news item (Who else is reporting this ? since when ? Does this comes from an insider source ? No it doesn't. It's coming from Joe Blogger, China), analyzing it ("Ho, a wild-assed rumor"), and filtering it (does a fanboyesque rumor that's been around since August needs to be published, and published now ?). Here you just complied with step 2 (vaguely. "tag: skeptic" does not really qualifies as analysis) and called it a day. It took your readers to tell why it's not fake (LK's post, hinting such a phone could exist, but not as an E7, and giving sources), why it's fake (me), plus the actual rumor itself (thanks to Our Dear Friend Motosomething). You could have debunked or corrected that rumor. Or you could have ignored it entirely (But I guess when world+dog reports on something, however worthless it is, there must be some kind of peer pressure).
(And I am sorry for all these parentheses)
Note that my criticism is not specific to this post: Engadget sometimes drops the ball when they have to provide more insight than facts. I wouldn't say "routinely", but often enough to warrant remarks like mine. Which annoys me since you also happen to be a worthy news source.
Chris Ziegler @ Sep 7th 2007 2:18PM
Smiley - I disagree. The very first thing I did was note that the alleged E7 bears a striking resemblance to the E6. That's called analysis in my book. That being said, the pictures and specs could both be real, the picture could be real and the specs fake, the specs real and the picture fake, or both - and in this case, I felt that the specs sounded believable enough for an in-development product to pass along. Do I buy the picture? No, but it looks interesting, it *could* be a prototype (I suppose), and until we have something more solid, it'll do just fine for a rumor post of the highest order.
Chris
derX @ Sep 7th 2007 3:48PM
Yo, Smiley, if you were a little more interested in phones and less interested in being a pedantic pest, you would've visited BGR (I'm guess you don't know what that is, seeing, well, you know, boygeniusreport.com) and have seen BGR himself has a similarly spec'd device. BTW, BG seems pretty confident about this one.
-------
Urgh, Chris, I commiserate with you...some people....
Smiley @ Sep 7th 2007 5:38PM
Chris:
Then we agree to disagree.
Weird spec (IMO), bad pic, no name to back it, not a fresh news: to me that's not "of the highest order", unless there's something to add. Case in point: the Boy Genius did report this rumor, but blasted it as "100% fake" and made a parallel with the (unrelated) N95-killer (OK, I'll admit: it's a *tiny bit* easier to do when you've got an actual Motorola insider).
derX:
When an otherwise good website repeatedly relies on merely reporting stuff without the necessary insight, I do criticize it. Because, guess what, I want them to be better. If to you critical thinking is "pedantic", you might as well get your news from press releases. Also, note how one can be critical without resorting to name calling.
As for "BGR" as you call it, maybe you should re-read his post.
derX @ Sep 8th 2007 5:57AM
"When an otherwise good website repeatedly relies on merely reporting stuff without the necessary insight, I do criticize it. Because, guess what, I want them to be better."
-->By *your* standards, this site might suffer from posts lacking insight and an acceptable level of information, but, for many, including myself, the posts do a pretty good job of giving information. The picture was accompanied by a "disclaimer" in the post warning it might be fake. Just as you were able to do your analysis, other reader are able, and encouraged, to do the same. By simply providing information with questionable authenticity, as aforementioned, we can all make our own deductions. For all we know, this *could* be a prototype, remember how everyone thought the newest iPod nano leaked photos were just a bad photoshop job?
Also, this is not "Smiley's Angels," it is, however, EngadgetMobile and site ran independent of you; if it's not up to your standards, read something else, start your own site, or abstain from commenting, because they'd all just be redundant posts of your dissatifaction.
"If to you critical thinking is 'pedantic', you might as well get your news from press releases."
-->Critical thinking *is* good thing, however, being hypercritical not, and I find people who do that to be as annoying as pedantic pests.
"As for 'BGR' as you call it, maybe you should re-read his post."
-->Firstly, BGR isn't my personal name for the site, it just so happens to be the logo BG decided to choose, personally. However, if you want to give me credit, go ahead; hell, because, apparently, I am a prolific acronym creator, if you're feeling that liberal, may I get credit for USA, GSM, LOL, and STFU, too? Secondly, I believe you want me to re-read the part of the post with him saying the pic of the E7 and specs accompanying it are fake. Touche. But I want you to re-read the part directly after it. Hell, I'll provide it for you. "What we just learned however, is theres a secret Nokia N95 competitor in the works. Its currently being held under strict watch and is never to leave the testing labs. It features 3G, WiFi, GPS, a full touch-screen, 5 megapixel camera, VGA screen, and is most likely a slider phone." Now, Engadgetmobile's, "VGA touchscreen, 5 megapixel cam with xenon flash, integrated GPS and WiFi, 2GB of integrated storage, HSDPA, you get the idea." Seeing any similarities here? Also, there are earlier posts referring to it, as well, if you're so inclined to check.
----------
I know I am responding to this out of order, but, hey, this one deserved special attention.
" Also, note how one can be critical without resorting to name calling."
(First, I need to mention that mine was quite tasteful, you could've rightfully called it "tasteful name calling," but, hey, in a couple of posts, you've earned a reputation of having a disagreeing opinion, so, I'll just chalk that exclusion, to that.)
--> Yes, it is entirely possible to be critical without resorting to [tasteful] name calling, but that, amongst other things, would make my posts--particularly the long ones--lacking in personality, and render them as lifeless as yours.
Per usual, this is nothing personal.

No worries about the dimensions. The dimensions around like "Motorola Rokr E6". Don't believe any confirm from "The Boy Genius Report" and "Engadget Mobile".
For example:
"The Boy Genius Report" and "Engadget Mobile" confirm photos of "Motorola Scapel". If you think clearly and logicly, Motorola doesn't want they "big secret" easly public know, Motorola keep that's big secret for nearly 4 years. In the GSMA around February 2007, Motorola show up "Motorola Scapel" just in the photo and just a little part of "Motorola Scapel". That's mean "Motorola Scapel Project" is really big secret project of Motorola. So how come "The Boy Genius Report" and "Engadget Mobile" can confirm that's "Motorola Scapel" but other famous website, television and other doesn't confirm? If "Motorola Scapel" already confirm; so like CNN, CNBC and other will confirm too.
