Steve Jobs gives all iPhone owners $100 back
El Jobso is "confident" Apple's made the right decision to lower the price of the iPhone yesterday -- and really, we can't fault them for knocking some cash off the top to attract new buyers, why is cheaper gear a bad thing all of a sudden? But even given the outcry, we definitely didn't see this one coming. In another open letter to his people, Jobs states that he's giving all iPhone owners a $100 Apple gift certificate (details to follow in the next week -- it goes without saying this will only apply to people who bought before the price drop). Well, that's mighty kind of you Steve. And definitely unprecedented in the consumer electronics industry that a company would give cash back to early adopters -- those most accustomed to buying a gadget first, asking questions later, and bottling their complaints when said gadget later drops dramatically in price.

oh happy day.

It's simple: iPhone = iPodTouch + phone. iPodTouch is $299, so how can Apple continue to charge a $300 premium just for the phone capability ?! It can't, and that's why it HAD to drop it $200.
Now, did they know they were making such a premium before ? Sure, they had to know it, but they couldn't sustain it anymore with the iPodTouch at $299. Whatever though, everyone knew the iPhone was overpriced, but the Apple zeolots were going to buy it at any price anyway.
pwkalt1 @ Sep 6th 2007 8:15PM
Seeing as how the iPhone came first, I'd say it's more like iPodTouch = iPhone - phone.

must be nice

"Jobs states that he's giving all iPhone owners a $100 Apple gift certificate"
Well, rather than givin iPhone owners $100 back, it sounds like he's giving them a coupon for $100 off their next Apple purchase...
Brad Johnson @ Sep 6th 2007 5:51PM
$100 back so that when I whip out my iPhone, people around me don't start laughing because they know it's hard for me to sit down after being reamed out??? I'll take it and buy some iTunes. Thanks for not leaving us looking like schmucks.

Exactly, Apple still wins.. Some apple fanboys might be silenced by this move but I'm sure they'll still feel the burn. This was a good move on Apple's part to save face as their fanboys camped the launch of this thing and a month and some days later they burnt them all. Steve just reset the balance so all the fanboys can get a jump start on drooling over the next big apple thing.
Pranay Sanghavi @ Sep 6th 2007 5:59PM
yes of course, thats how it is. but it is as good as a 100$ cash. i guess u can even buy the accessories, itunes music, ringtones, etc, etc from apple within the next year or so.
and show me one techie guy who wouldn't plan to buy a product of apple. remember, these are the ones who stood in line under the scorching sun and the frosty wind, to seize the gizmo. people like our parents wouldn't even do that [spend 500+$] in their dreams.
so definitely it is worth it for those people, they'd have anyway planned their purchase from apple even without/before this 100 rebate. its like an amazon rebate/certificate.
but point here is what engadget mentioned, no one gives away free money back? does anyone? .. ponder on the confidence of Steve!
Steve @ Sep 6th 2007 6:00PM
Nice little refund
willie @ Sep 6th 2007 6:05PM
Yeah nice "little" refund
Andrew Peron @ Sep 6th 2007 6:31PM
...are you all still really complaining? seriously?
first it's horrible that Apple lowered the price, which I admit, is unfortunate based on the fact that the product has been out for a tad longer than a month or so,
but now,
Apple's willing to give you 100 dollars to spend in their store on whatever you want and YOU complain still?!
Seriously, come on.
if you're going to complain, you shouldn't get anything at all.
Most companies couldn't give two shits if you felt shafted, they already have your money.
All their trying to do is offer you back some of your spending. So what if it's for the Apple Store? are you really going to try and convince me that there's not something there you've had your eye on for a while, and now you have the extra gravy to spend on it. seriously.
buy a new keyboard, or a nice case for that shiny iPhone of yours.
It all boils down to this:
Beggars can't be choosers.

This is the greatest marketing ploy for apple people by far. Now I can admit I would almost bend over backwards to get an iphone but the reality is, my at&t 8125 works just fine. I never gave apple the time of day before the iphone but one thing I always knew about apple was that it was way overpriced, and everyone else in the world too knows that and it's common knowledge. So lets take the iphone for example, with the buying power of apple they negotiate like walmart for their prices on screens, memory, and of course had the ability to get someone drunk enough at at&t to accept a deal that gives away so much power of the carrier. So the phone starts off outrageously high in price, and if you do the math on components which are in the iphone on ebay even you see that probably even including r&d costs, the phone only cost them 300 or 350 to make (and once enough are sold the r&d goes away). Anyways clearly there was a huuuuuge profit on each phone, so what they are doing here, is pulling a move like our friends at microsoft always do. Give away the product so they can buy the services later. So they will give you a 100 dollar gift certificate and you might go and buy itunes or lets say a shuffle and they won't do as well, but lets say you go and buy another iphone for a signifigant other or a ipod touch, they are losing some profit on it, but they are liquidating inventory, keeping their investors happy, and gaining market share. Then again going back on itunes, buying more overpriced content and having their way with you, but again will just let mac fans live in joyful ignorance, cause it's always going to be this way, and you always know by the time you start to enjoy a product from apple a newer toy will be hitting the shelves. (sigh... ) thanks for listening

....I'm not going to even bother to read that. There must've been at least three paragraphs in there.

Does this mean that they will introduce a 16gb iphone for $500 so it would be apple's normal price drop were they drop the low model then keep the highest capacity iphone now introduce a higher capacity!
roe @ Sep 6th 2007 7:05PM
Haha, I knew this phone wasn't worth the price when it came out the first time. This phone is a waste of money if you spent more then $300. I had this phone for two weeks hated it because it's not advanced like my new Nokia N95 phone. It's about time Apple got smart and made it cheaper, my opinion it should be free with a 2 yr contract. It's like comparing a Pontiac (Iphone) to a Mercedes Benz (Nokia N95) By far no "Comparasion"! I have the Nokia N95 now and worth every penny!!! Just go to Nokia website and people will be shocked how great and far futured this phone is compare to the Iphone which the iphone and the nokia N95 was only about $50-$75 differce when it first came out. At least apple is trying to get smart about it. It's about time! And trust me, you will never see the Nokia N95 slash there prices like the apple did. Come on now, have you ever seen Mercedes Benz slash there prices too???

i believe you meant "their" about... 4 or 5 times in that comment.
and, the nokia N95 is actually $749, making it $149 more expensive than the 8GB iPhone at launch.
and that's with no touch screen and a whopping 160MB of internal storage.
the only thing the N95 has going for it over the iPhone is GPS and HSDPA.
which is hardly worth the $149 price increase.
the N95 is going for a different market demographic than the iPhone, as well.

This $100 credit is really dumb and not sending a good precedent. Apple releases new products and changes prices all the time. After you've bought something for 30 days - anywhere - you deal with the consequences of your purchase.
p0x @ Sep 6th 2007 9:57PM
Or buy it with my AMEX and make them pricematch for up to 60 days. Then take that $99 and buy ringtones for 99 songs you have already bought.
Sheesh, anyone who buys tech should ALWAYS use a price matching and warranty extending credit card.
p0x @ Sep 6th 2007 10:03PM
Come to think of it.....
Isn't it odd that they wait until just past the 30day money back/get out of your plan before they announce a drastic price cut?
chuck @ Sep 7th 2007 8:02AM
The iPhone was released on June 29. The price cut was announced over 60 days after the product's release, not 30 days after.
Matteo @ Sep 7th 2007 5:53AM
It's not really unprecedented, Microsoft did roughly the same after the first early price cut on the original Xbox.
Pete @ Sep 7th 2007 12:57PM
Well done steve, and lets face it, if you brought an iPhone in the 1st few months then your going 2 buy another apple product so $100 is a great bonus. its money for nothing as you where happy 2 pay the $600 in the 1st place.
Henk van Ess @ Sep 7th 2007 4:19PM
1. Will users of the 4 Gig get a refund too (=me)?
2. I tried to complain but I can't find any mailadress where I can nag about my loss :) Anyone, where can I find a complaint form or emailadress on the Apple site to express myself?
Alex @ Sep 8th 2007 10:35AM
Yay me!
