Apple set to launch ringtone service for iPhone September 5th?

The New York Post is reporting that Apple's September 5th dog and pony show is set to usher in the age of iTunes as ringtone-management software for iPhone. Apparently the rumored service will see iTunes able to convert any song into a ringtone -- for a fee, of course -- and you'll even have the ability to dictate which portion of the song becomes the tone. The offering will also include the ability to use previously purchased tunes as ringtones, and we're hoping your own music in iTunes, too. We're feeling this is long overdue, but can assume that Apple could have been in conversation with the labels to sort out the financials of all this magic. Watch this space next week for more news on pricing and availability -- if indeed, it actually pans out.

iFuntastic will do it for free, and also let you do other things. This ship has sailed for the technically knowledgeable, but I guess the fraidy-cats or noobs will be fine with bending over for paying for their songs twice.

i have a feeling the general public is going to think that apple is the first to allow people to convert regular music into custom ringtones. While it may be a first for drm protected music, http://www.3guppies.com/ (previously mixxer.com) has been doing this since june of last year.

This feature was in the beta software of the itunes software that they were using internally to activate their iphones and then they took it out of the final release. They couldn't figure how to make money off it. They wanted to charge people for creating their own ringtones using their own music. Supposedly it is as simple as selecting which part u want and then dragging to the iphone.

Oops. I've been slicing my own ring tones for years now. Does iFuntastic allow you to modify the volume of the tones? I thought it was pretty lame that you couldn't use anything you wanted as a ringtone on the iphone.
