Sony Ericsson's W580i Walkman lands on AT&T
Just weeks after Sony Ericsson's sexy W580i Walkman phone went live on Rogers, AT&T customers can now get their hands on the mobile, too. According to AT&T's own listing of the handset, this svelte slider will (obviously) tout a two-megapixel camera, video recording / playback, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, a built-in pedometer, Memory Stick Micro support, quad-band connectivity, and even PacMan / Ms. PacMan games (huzzah!). You can snap it up right now for $269.99 sans a contract, or $79.99 after inking your name to a two-year agreement and waiting for a pesky rebate to return.

Yayyyy SE... now how about the K850i huh?
Anthony @ Aug 30th 2007 4:07PM
Is it just me or is that screen totally crappy? I mean, there's about 4 gallons of dead space framing it.
Even Nokia does better than that.
SE better get w/ the program or they'll end up like S(ony). Their "new phones" don't ever seem to be released & when they do they're DOA in terms of functionality/design.
drsilverworm @ Aug 30th 2007 6:05PM
It's a 2.0 inch screen with QVGA... Anything bigger is usally considered high-end, and QVGA is a beautiful resolution on that size of a screen

Now if only the black w580i would show up somewhere!
MILOOFSCORPIO @ Aug 30th 2007 6:39PM
WAT NO 3G? thanks a lot sony, anybody knows if there's hope for a SE 3G made for america? and it's the w580i camera autofocus? and is it better than the w810i?
derX @ Aug 30th 2007 10:30PM
The camera is autofocus, most of the 2MP+ (if not all) SE Walkman (if not all) phones sport it. And, I'd say it beats the w810i in terms of design. It's thinner and I'm guessin' that's a spring-assisted slide.
Looks good to me. And it's cheap enough that I don't have to waste my upgrade on it. I'm eyeing the Kaiser, Q9h, or Pantech c810.
Cash @ Aug 31st 2007 12:21AM
Not Autofocus, actually. While some spec sheets say it is, I got my hands on one back in July and it's focus free just like 99% of the other camera phones out there, and nowhere near as good photo quality-wise as the 810. Image was fuzzy even in good lighting conditions, of the level you'd expect from a Moto, not an SE. No biggy, everything else it does it does very well, I just need that good camera too. The K850 is coming out in a little while, so no harm no foul.
derX @ Aug 31st 2007 3:10AM
@Cash,
Thanks for the correction, sorry about that MILOOFSCORPIO. Hey, Cash, would you recommend the phone, you know, as a back up? Or is it not worth it at the sans-contract price?
Cash @ Sep 1st 2007 5:04AM
@derX
Ya know it's really a tough call. My favorite feature about this phone is the display honestly. When I say the thing is crystal clear, I mean to say it is just gorgeous, almost rivaling my new 22" Sammy monitor. Being an SE phone, you know it comes jam packed with features and programs galore (I played around with the app that lets you record a few seconds of a song with the mic, then checks an online database for the name and artist of the song. Freaking sweet is all I can say. How many times would that have come in handy in the past?) The bluetooth remote program that lets me control my computer through my phone has been a favorite of mine for a long time. It's so simple, but being able to control media player or shut down my pc from across the room is one of the top 5 things I love about my W810.
As this is part of the walkman line, it goes without saying that the media apps rock as well. I've got season 6 of southpark on my 810 right now and it looks great (for a tiny cellphone screen I mean) so I can only imagine how they would look on this beauty. Audio playback is on par with the iPod shuffle, which is pretty damn good, and the bundled earphones are better then most pairs that come with MP3 players that cost just as much as this phone. The formfactor is nice and it feels great in the hand. Keys are a good size and tactile response for one handed text messaging for all but the biggest of hands. If you ever bought a light up battery or antenna for a cell before, you'll love the light show the 580 puts on. Lighting affects can be customized for moods, themes, and individual callers, ie gf/bf can be pink fade to purple, work can be solid red, parents can be cash green etc. They can also be set to pulse with the music playback too, which can be cool if you're the type that likes to show off.
Call quality is excellent, and it sounds like they took care of the only downside to some of their older phones such as my beloved 810: low earpiece volume even at the max setting. This thing is loud and proud at full vol, but remains clear at all levels. Battery life has also been improved by 20 percent over the last generation, or so they say anyway. Your mileage may vary. Of course you've seen the specs so you know it comes with everything.. bluetooth 2.0, usb 2.0, Stereo bluetooth etc. The only weak point for me was the camera. While it is great for a cell camera, the lack of flash, led light, and autofocus are a deal breaker for me after being spoiled by all three on the W810. Long story short, if not for the pending release of the k850 later this year, I really wouldn't hesitate to pick up this phone. It does a lot, and everything it does it does extremely well. While I always advise people to get some one on one time with a gadget before putting their money down, I think anyone that buys this phone is going to be happy with it. I just really want that 5MP camera with autoflash that the 850 will be packing, otherwise I'd be all over the 580 like white on rice. Anyway, hope that answers your question.

CellularOne has had the black one since right after July 4th... 149 with 2 year contract, not including the mail in rebate.
Nora Brown @ Aug 31st 2007 12:28AM
And the Z310! It landed, too, gang.
whoster69 @ Aug 31st 2007 12:38AM
Might be worth considering for a carry around phone. Wish it was flip though.
MILOOFSCORPIO @ Sep 1st 2007 12:43PM
thanks a lot for the info, so what you are saying it's that the w580 works better as a w600 replacement and thats still a good deal, how loud its the outside speaker? And where did
u hear about the k850 coming soon, is it coming to an american carrier?
MILOOFSCORPIO @ Sep 1st 2007 1:22PM
WOW, i just google the k850 and i've heard of it before but since most high end SE phones are triband gsm and 2100 umts i tend to ignore them, cuz ill just cry if i look at them, but I'm really amazed at this phone its like a dream a high end SE that is a triband UMTS quadband gsm i cant help to drool, any idea if ATT will pick it up? or it'll see the same fate of the
american N95 and be over 700 dollars, not that the phone its not worth that much but i have like 3 upgrades that are due and i would love a discount.(sorry for bad grammar im typing this from opera mini on my w810)
akn @ Sep 1st 2007 7:15PM
An AT&T-branded W580 in grey (better looking than white, I think) is also available on Amazon for $0.01, but the only selectable voice plan is 2000 minutes for $99.99/month. I'd be all over it if I could stick with my $39.99/month...

i've had a cingular/att sony ericsson w600i/w810i and THIS is the one i've been waiting for :]

Does any one know when the pink W5801 will be released?
candy @ Nov 2nd 2007 3:28AM
I just purchased the W8501 a few hours ago and am setting it up. I have to say that as a Mac user I'm confused. All 7 At&t reps assured me prior to purchasing the phone that it's as easy as downloading Disc2phone software from Sony's website. It's not working. Anyone have any ideas? I guess the older models used to come with the software cds, naturally I can't get help from any of the At&t sales reps because they all claim the phone to be "too new" to know anything about it's inner workings. Although Sony customer service assures me "you shouldn't have a problem", that I don't need to purchase any additional software to be able to transfer music, I'm just not getting anywhere. Anyone else have an issue with this yet?
chelsea @ Jan 8th 2008 5:45PM
i had the same exact problem.i have no clue where to go because when i go to the disc2phone part, it says my phone isnt connected
