Welp, 'tis done friends, but we're going to have to wait a week for all the gory details to be released. Geohot and his crew of trusty fiddlers have apparently found a solution for sorting the iPhone for worldwide consumption by hardware
unlocking the beast. We've seen a video, and know he's been well involved with iPhone shenanigans since
day one, but until we see it in our hand color us excited but not sold -- though we're stoked that they report a software based version may be on the horizon. But in the unhappy event that it ends up being hardware unlock only, you can use this week to brush up on your soldering skills. We're gonna be all over this in the coming days so know that the minute we know more, you will too. Peep the vid after the break.

What they fail to mention is visual voicemail won't work and I highly doubt that EDGE/GPRS will work since there is no way to alter the APN on the iPhone. Even if they manage to get past all that, who's to say that Apple won't release an update that destroys all this anyway.
Good luck to those going for this.

@ mobilehavoc
good point. Will Visual Voicemail work?

it is my understanding that visual voicemail requires apple software and servers running on the particular network to process the job, therefore i believe visual voicemail is an AT&T only at this point in time.

you're right. If using another SIM in iPhone (after unlocking it), when you hit the voicemail tab. It dials a call to your carrier's voicemail

Very good point on the update as Apple is quite well known for putting those bloody numerous updates back to back to say! I'm sure that these updates would fill in blanked out info when unlocked illegally!

I truely hope that the unlocking works. When one gets off the American Island, US service providers are not going to do it for EU and Asia. Apple, by kissing up to the service providers, you have put up the blinders and limit your revenue streams. You have begged competitors and hackers to react.
Didn't you learn from the early Apple Mac vs. Windows PC era?

"Mess of circuitry"? It's just one flippin' switch! And you don't even need the switch, just the wires. Check out:
