Samsung looks to patent two new gaming phone designs

Samsung looks to move forward into the
realm of mobile gaming with two new U.S. patents involving gameplay-oriented handsets. For starters, patent #1 (pictured above) describes a "portable communication terminal for games." The display on this design involves a hinged "flip" that unveils a dual-row numeric keypad complete with phone navigational array when opened, and a gaming d-pad when closed (we hope that hinge is solid); the 'A' and 'B' buttons are near the earpiece and always visible. Patent #2 (pictured above) centers on a "portable communication terminal with foldable keypad" with several references to a hinge (perhaps a sliding type of some sort). On this design, the display swivels up and out of the way to display the numeric keypad, which is hidden when playing games. Both of these handset patent applications detail handsets with gaming as the first priority and calling / texting as a second priority, kinda like
a recent patent application from Samsung on a joystick phone.

I am sooo very shocked. Not only are these designs *very good* (btw, not too impressed with Samsung, normally), but they are also very original and equally as innovative.
The second one impresses me more. I think they can even replace that keyboard with a QWERTY one and make it like a gaming SideKick. But with Samsung's cram-a-lot-in-a-little design style, it'd could be *the* phone to get. Hell, maybe as good as--doubt, but possibly, better than the Nokia n95 (what, thought I was gonna say the iphone?).

they both suck. one is a Gameboy knock-off and one is a sidekick knock-off come on these are not new or good designs. How far are we willing to go before our "phones" become glorified PSPs. Honestly, if you are that desperate to game while on the go, get a PSP or a DS and a phone, don't combine both, it is a bad idea!

What is wrong with a phone specializing in gaming, does it *not* make sense to you? The PSP and DS are so sucessful partly due to their ultra mobility: why not combine a device fitted for mobility with a mobile phone? This, of course, goes with the assumption it is implemented well, which is a distinct possibility given the industry's previous sucesses (e.g.: Sony Ericsson's Walkman and CyberShot lines).
Perhaps you're right, multi-tasking phones just don't work. A phone should just stick to one thing: phone calls. You know, because phones like the Nokia n95 just do *too* much. Why carry that around, when you can carry a phone, camera, music player, GPS navigator (hell, *too* high tech, let's just hire a Viking), and a PDA (...my sentiments exactly, maybe the 'ol pen and pad will suffice)?
