Is this the US Nokia N95?
Yes, we realize you can already buy the N95 in US stores, but you know what we mean. This here is allegedly some sort of promotional material for the upcoming real US-spec N95, showing a few interesting changes over its older, European sibling. Though we knew US 3G was in the cards, it turns out the devil may be in the details: contrary to other evidence, it looks like the handset will support HSDPA 850 / 1900 -- AT&T's 3G bands, not T-Mobile's. The battery grows from 950mAh to a healthy 1200mAh, but to accomodate the added load, the camera's protective shutter has seemingly been removed. Growing along with the battery is the in-box microSD card, going from 512MB for the initial launch to a full 1GB. Finally, you can forget purple and beige; the US variant will apparently stick with a decidedly safer choice of black to adorn its rear. All decent changes, we figure, as long as our glorious 5 megapixel cams don't break.

Indeed! Thanks.

This would be just the third GSM handset with integrated GPS offered by a U.S. carrier:
http://www.thegpsinsider.com/2007/08/09/coming-to-america-nokia-n95-with-3g/
But I'm still scratching my head over AT&T with this. Why would they want to cannibalize iPhone sales with this? Or more specifically, those juicy iPhone data plans...
Adam @ Aug 9th 2007 10:21PM
Customers are still going to want a data plan with the N95. The integration with Flickr, assisted GPS, and Webkit (Safari) web browser will definitely suck up some data.

Um, this is a SmartPhone. There are people who need/ want to do more with their phone - and do it faster. Not that a keyboard-less N95 is an efficient tool for work, but, hey, 3G is boatloads faster to upload to flickr and download from Youtube than is Edge - even "fortified" EDGE.

Want - when and where can I buy this...
Anthony @ Aug 9th 2007 10:11PM
My N95 came w/ a 1gb card.
I'd really have to see some closer shots as the shutter doesn't go much beyond the ring around the lense.
1200 mah would be nice. Maybe I can shoe-horn one in.
Truly though 950 doesn't really slow me down. I just charge every day or day & a half & it's fine (like when I'm uploading photos or just hanging around the laptop w/ the USB charger going).
New firmware would also be nice. Maybe cut down on the shutter lag. It's a killer.

Wait- I just thought of the real possible benefit of a "new" N95 for the US- maybe they'll pay more attention to the super loose slider. Click, click, click. It does bug me a little. Plus it's so loose you can't really even put it in your jeans pocket w/o at lease one side opening.
Am I replying to my own comment? Yes. I live in airports. I have lots of free time.
Adam @ Aug 9th 2007 10:23PM
Don't worry. I had the click click click too. Needed to apply the tape hack... :-)
Which airport are you stuck at?
Anthony @ Aug 9th 2007 10:39PM
Boise. Free wifi is always good, but I've checked out virtually every blog I visit & read all the Euro cycling news for the past year (all of which I've already read before, of course) on 4 different sites.
I've considered the tape hack, but just don't want to cut electrical tape & stick it to the slider mech. Mostly I don't want to buy the special T screwdriver.

Hmm . . . my bf and I bought our n95s at the same time. Fortunately, nothing was wrong with mines when I received it. My bf on the other hand, has that click click problem and complains that his phone feels kind of "loose". In comparison, when he holds my n95, he says that it feels more "tight" than his. I wonder if it's just me . . .

Sling Media CEO was on the GigaOM Show with the US version. Episode #3. I still have doubts. Anyway, where's the S60 client Krikorian?
Al @ Aug 10th 2007 12:42AM
You guys left out a new detail:
128 MB of system RAM.
There should be about 80 MB free after boot up. The current version has about 19 MB free on boot up.
deadlock32 @ Aug 10th 2007 3:06AM
NO F-en WAY!!!!!! ITS PERFECT NOW (well i wish it had a qwerty keyboard) but 128 MB or ram is EXACTLY WHAT THIS PHONE NEEDED!!!!! = ]
on another note, you dont have to worry about the camera if you have this case:
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/reviews/item/Casing_the_Nokia_N95.php
and scroll down (like the 3rd one from the top) to the " Noreve Tradition N95 "
This nice case actually has a protector flap for the N95.
Its about time we stopped getting shafted by all the phones that don't make it here. = P
Frodo @ Aug 10th 2007 3:08AM
Why can't they leave me the Euro data radio?
derX @ Aug 10th 2007 6:34PM
Dude, you can't be serious. You Guys get everything we get FIRST (well, besides the Jesus Phone) and most of the time BETTER.
Just let us have some US-only joy. Before we know it, you guys will have something else for us to oogle over, you know, but Euro-only.
----
Does it *not* feel good to have a better phone that's US only than Europe. I mean, how often (if it ever has [besides the Jesus Phone]) happen?
BTW, I'm just havin' some fun here, this isn't any "Euro-hatin'" LOL
sharpxia @ Aug 10th 2007 3:46AM

Version 1.0 @ Aug 10th 2007 5:22AM
