Is Verizon having a
busy summer? We guess it
depends on who you ask. For some, the time for the
HTC Vox (aka
UTStarcom XV5800) finally hit the hands of employees last week and the device should be available for sale sometime in August. All the stats remain the same like a
Qualcomm 7500 series EV-DO Rev A chipset and a 400MHz processor. The only thing we noticed was the change for internal storage which is claimed to be 162MB, which sounds a little strange to us. Let's hope that
Big Red can pull this one off in time for Labor Day.
[Thanks, HTC Kid]

R U F N KID (HTC) ME? Dont be like this. I want this phone! But thought i was going to have to shell out the big bucks for the larger i760...which i really dont want a large phone....PLease verizon
MarcG @ Aug 2nd 2007 2:27PM
A claimed internal storage of 162 MB probably means that there is 256 MB of onboard flash (ROM), 94 of which are taken up by the OS and other built-in apps that VZW would have added, leaving 162 MB.
rage151 @ Aug 2nd 2007 2:30PM
Isn't this the 6800 (to follow the currently available 6700)?
Gamer90 @ Aug 2nd 2007 2:44PM
No this isn't the 6800. Wow WM 5? Way to drop the ball Verizon.
Illrigger @ Aug 2nd 2007 2:44PM
This is a Smartphone (no touchscreen) like the Q, not a PDA Phone like the i760/6700. And no, it's not the xv6800, it's the xv5800.
kthakilla @ Aug 2nd 2007 2:45PM
No, rage151, the 6800 is the Titan, running WM6 Pro, whilst this runs WM5(/6?) Standard.
This is the 5800, no typo.
Digital Man @ Aug 2nd 2007 2:46PM
Aww...I was all set for green!
Ominx @ Aug 2nd 2007 2:50PM
I was wondering what happened to the Libra aka xv5800. This is a nice surprise. It looks like it's a nice compromise between the i760 and XV6800, which were my top two choices before this "announcement". There's no mention here of WM6. Anyone know for sure? With Rev A. in a tight package with front dial pad and nice touch screen, this could be a winner. I'm looking forward to these late summer pda releases.
brad @ Aug 2nd 2007 2:59PM
this is only the 10th time we have heard "verizon to release new phones soon" come on, we need dates and hard evidence....im so sick of vzw and there "delayed" crap...i like this phone but i really like the kraizer much better...if nothing hits the block before then, cya later VZW, way to let us down again....
on another note, i do like this phone but if its WM5, i think id rather re-install windows ME than purposely buy an outdated phone
Daniel @ Aug 2nd 2007 3:09PM
ok so i'm going to buy whichever VZW smartphone offers the best combination of the following:
1. Wifi (no way am I paying for a VZW data plan).
2. GPS (internally - no stupid puck necessary)
3. Keypad (touch screen dialing is awful, especially while driving).
4. Speed of unit (navigating applications). Even with updated ROM to 3.5, the VX6700 is slow as hell compared to my Treo 650.
5. SD slot - I am tired of buying new memory formats. Let's try to stick to mini-SD or regular SD, shall we?
Which wins - the VX6800, 5600, or i760? Open to advice/suggestions.
clxa38 @ Aug 2nd 2007 6:32PM
look elsewhere, the xv5800 doesn't support wifi
brad @ Aug 2nd 2007 4:11PM
None of the new smartphones offer internal GPS, your only hope is with VZ navigator which will be on these phones...
the only two with wifi are the 760 and 6800
the 760 is the only one with an external dial pad and wifi
YOur best bet is for the i760, it doesnt meet all of those criteria but more than the others....
Daniel @ Aug 2nd 2007 4:36PM
Brad and cxla, thanks for answering my questions.
Are you guys sure about the VZW Navigator? Is that right from launch?
brad @ Aug 2nd 2007 5:58PM
it supposed too, thats what vz app zone is and possibly one of the reasons for the million dealays...if it has vz appzone it will have the navigator
joetron2030 @ Aug 3rd 2007 10:08AM
VZW has yet to keep WiFi enabled on any phone they've released. Have they changed their stance on this?
I'd be surprised if they had.
elgee02 @ Aug 3rd 2007 2:25PM
"VZW has yet to keep WiFi enabled on any phone they've released."
joetron2030: Check again. The xv6700 and the Samsung i730 have WiFi enabled out of the box.
Digital Man @ Aug 2nd 2007 3:18PM
Where does it say it's going to be WM5?
PeterF @ Aug 2nd 2007 3:37PM
look at the picture
tande @ Aug 2nd 2007 3:20PM
I'm with brad, I'll believe it when I see it in a VZW store.
I don't want to lose hope that we'll be getting all of these new smartphone/pocket pc choices relatively soon but we've seen them over and over and over again and they still aren't released.
james @ Aug 2nd 2007 4:04PM
i remeber seening pics from UTSTARCOM a year and a half ago but w/ no dpad. jeez. At least we know it lives. and in both cdma and gsm. Can you active the telus version on verizon?
John Wydra @ Aug 2nd 2007 4:20PM
the HTC site shows a TI's OMAP 850, 201 MHz
processor, not 400. Also Windows Mobile 6
vzwbear @ Aug 2nd 2007 4:20PM
These new PDAs and SmartPhones are taking forever to launch but keep in mind Verizon does more research on there new devices then any other carrier to have as little defect as possible also keep in mind all of these Brodcom Qualcomm law suites banning Qualcomm from importing certain chips is definitely slowing down the process of launching new phones and brad I agree the Kraizer is a superior phone I would be ecstatic to get it but I would never trade in a superior network for a phone and for the windows mobile 5 or 6 hopefully it launches with 6 but if not I am sure there will be an update to 6 sorry for all the grammatical errors

The article currently says "HTC Vox" but the UTStarcomm 5800 is an HTC Libra isn't it?
Aaron @ Aug 2nd 2007 6:12PM
LOL @ Zune.
Robert @ Aug 2nd 2007 7:29PM
You sure that is for the Libra S720 an not for the GSM S710 or upcomoing S730(GSM) devices that look similar.
Jdmountford @ Aug 2nd 2007 8:17PM
Now there is testing and there is marketing and then there is beating the horse until it's head is split open, brains are leaking out and you can not tell it is a horse.
Here lately that is Verizon's testing process there are so many phones that VZW has been sitting on for well over half a year. VZW did not lose customers to the iPhone, it lost customers due to inaction.
TDG01 @ Aug 3rd 2007 12:08PM
I totally agree...the i760 and the xv6800 are at least a year late imo... i wish there was an alternative, but there really isn't....at least in my area, vzw has the best network....they know it, and they sit on it and work you into the ground for it...
In my dreams these networks would be open reregulation and commoditized....I get that's what MNVO are supposed to do...but why in the world are we last in progressive mobile technology...the past 5 years have been baby steps...we've been talking about crossbow for 2 years....and it's still not widely available...and even if it was, it's not a monumental upgrade that moves the industry forward....
As much as I'm a Microsoft guy, Apple did that with the iPhone, at least in form....
cebo @ Aug 3rd 2007 12:41PM
Verizon is a fascist regime....its that simple.
elgee02 @ Aug 3rd 2007 2:25PM
Hahaha, come on dude that's weak. This is a free market, which means your free to go with any other available carrier you want (which I'm sure are all saints right?)!
How can VZW be fascist if they don't force you to do a damn thing? I've yet to see anyone from VZW going around pointing guns at people's heads and making them sign contracts.
And what exactly about this thread on the 5800 brought out such a ridiculous comment anyways? Is it cause the thing doesn't have WiFi? You better have a lot more than that because last I checked no other carrier has WiFi on ALL their phones. Apple and AT&T must be fascist too eh?
Seriously dude, I know not everyone drinks the VZW Kool-Aid, and that's fine. But going onto a blog post about a soon to be released PDA calling the carrier fascist? Yeah dude, that's just weak.
cebo @ Aug 3rd 2007 2:33PM
When this phone actually comes out, I may rethink my post. Verizon refuses to release any smartphones that are even remotely current or up to date. They also refuse to provide any information at all about any release dates. They have us all in contract, and therefore limit our ability to go to other carrier without paying hundreds of dollars. Additionally, that you can only use a "verizon" phone on the verizon network further limits the "free market" enviorment. If the mobile phone industry was truely a free market, you could purchase any cdma phone and use it on "the network", thus encouraging phone manufacturers to make the best phones possible, and the providers to provide the best network possible. There is nothing free market about the cell industry.
elgee02 @ Aug 3rd 2007 3:12PM
Then Sprint and Alltel are just as "fascist" for not allowing other CDMA phones on their network. The only PDA Sprint has over VZW is the 6800, which VZW sill soon be releasing. Alltel is even worse.
And according to you ALL carriers are facist for requiring contracts that carry early termination fees... so it looks like your beef is with the industry as a whole.
And I am not too thrilled about waiting forever and a day for VZW to release these phones either, but supposedly a lot of this delay is to make sure most, if not all of these new PDA's are Rev A capable and/or have WM6 on them.
DagMX @ Aug 3rd 2007 2:18PM
Not an HTC Vox surely? The HTC S710(vox) has a 200mhz processor. So either the spec sheet is wrong or this is the HTC S730(Wings?)
DagMX @ Aug 3rd 2007 2:20PM
Also why is it running WM5?
and meant HTC S720
kr2ranger @ Aug 4th 2007 2:50AM
I'm sure that this will have the exact same specs as the HTC S720 that is sold here in Canada through Telus. You can check out the exact specs here:
http://mobility.ca/ab/pcs/handset_htc_s720.shtml
No it doesn't have Wifi, but it will be Rev A software upgradeable which is nice. Also it should have WM6 as the one from Telus does as does mine. I personally have the HTC S710 (with wifi) on the Rogers network. Great phone. I love the slide out keyboard.
brad @ Aug 4th 2007 12:07PM
Why didn't they put wifi on the s720 when it's on the s710 and 6800? That seems a little strange.
mneithercott @ Aug 5th 2007 9:26PM

Release dates for SCH-i760, vx6800, xv5800, treo 755p, Moto Q9m, Razr2
Dave @ Aug 7th 2007 10:55AM
GD Verizon ... Roll out some serious WM6 phones already! Jeezus. It's like pulling teeth. If I have to go another month with a WM5 Q I'm going to throw it off a building. Where's the Treo 755? Where's ANY WM6 phone?
eKsiSLe @ Aug 8th 2007 9:59AM
this is being launched from Qwest wireless on sept 15th. I personally work for qwest and have held this phone it doesnt have wifi and it will have windows mobile 5.0 smartphone edition
clxa38 @ Aug 8th 2007 12:25AM
umm HTC Libra (utstarcom xv5800) runs windows mobile 6 standard smartphone edition
Deano @ Aug 8th 2007 4:57PM
To pass the time until we get more info, SizeEasy of i760, xv6800, and xv5800 (HTC S720):
http://www.sizeasy.com/page/size_comparison/3408-SCH-i760-vs-xv6800-vs-S720-vs-Pack-Of-Playing-Cards
I think the 5800s size+convenience (front dial) + features wins for me.

SJ @ Aug 27th 2007 1:11PM
Back in June a Verizon business account rep told me the 5800 was being "retrofitted" to run WM6, and they were planning to release it in July. Obviously that timeframe has come and gone. I guess it remains to be seen if they will ever release this phone. It is almost a year ago that rumors and pics of this phone were hitting the web. Pretty pathetic.
Ellen @ Aug 30th 2007 9:16PM
I know this may sound really stupid, but I've been waiting for a decent Verizon PDA to come out for about 8 months now because I would like one and I have been able to get a new one at discount since that time. Therefore, I am not tied to contract. However, I hesitate to switch carriers because I use about a total of 2600 mins a month (due to friends and family across the country) and about 1500 of these minutes are IN minutes. All but maybe 3 of the people I talk to on a consistent basis are not Verizon customers. That said, I see that there are three semi-decent PDA's coming out on the Verizon board during September and October. The Samsung i760, the UTStarcom XV6800, and the UTStarcom XV5800. Which is really the best choice? I mean, hell... I've waited this long. I want something that's great, not just decent at this point. I understand to get phenomenal, I may have to consider switching providers, but at this point, I need as much help as I can get. Across the board. Anyone able to give me some sound advice? On which to pick if I stick with Big Red and/or which PDA would be the best option if I chose to switch carriers? I'd really appreciate it.
nae @ Sep 16th 2007 11:40AM
love it to death...are ya'll really giving these away?? if so PLEASE can i get one, my phon i have now is ridiculous and outdated i dont really have the money to get a new one. so please if yooh are giving them away can i possibly get one
SJ @ Sep 28th 2007 11:07AM
I just hope we arent dying of old age waiting for this phone, only to be disappointed with its performance. I think a large-scale mass exodus from Verizon would be the best way to let them know we are fed up with having the proverbial carrot dangled in front of our noses. I know this is unrealistic, but it would be funny if it really happened.
Sonni @ Nov 3rd 2007 3:31PM
When does this one come out for verizon? Will it be before Christmas?
