Actually you can use ANY GSM phone on their network. They don't lock their phones like Verizon does! You can a phone on eBay or directly from a reseller for about the same price as one with 2 year contract.

Yeah, I'm thinking I might be done with Verizon here pretty soon.
Parts of that line up would of gotten me excited months ago had they launched when first rumored. I'm sure most of that has to do with the fact that reading the gadgets makes all news seem like old news.
I'm also not looking to the inevitable fight I'm going to end up getting in with Verizon when I go to upgrade. I just know they're going to find away to void my "new every two" even though I've had the same phone for almost three years now.

the pearl2 will be with verizon, a camera enabled BB with multimedia 4 gig memory capabilities.
the original pearl will stay with ATT/cingular, no plans on picking up the old school one.
you should all keep in mind that this lineup was also touted to be out in june, and WM6 issues have pushed ALL the smartphones back in time. I am still leary of the launch dates for the smartphones, the handsets on the other hand I don't see much of a reason for delay.

The one I really care about here is the i760 - can anyone make out what it says next to i760? Some of the other phones say things like "Late August". I tried Jer's link, but it just takes me to a pic of Harry Potter. Nice.
It looks to me like "August awaiting chip". AUGH I can't make out what it SAYS!

my brother works for samsung and has been testing the i760 on Verizon's network for a tad over a month now...I personally cannot wait to be able to walk into a Verizon store and hand them 2-300 bucks for that little beauty...
August is a tad earlier than what he told me, he said to expect it in the middle of September at the earliest.

That was the one I'd been waiting for too. With the "Aug rolling" date and VZWguy's general warning of WM6 smartphones getting pushed further back its looking less and less appealing to me though.
Maybe I'll walk into a Verizon store and fall in love with it and pick one up but with rumors of the Pearl 2 and a CDMA "Prada" coming out I'd hate to be locked into a 2 year deal with it and have one of those hit.
Guess I could just go with a 1 year and pay a bit more upfront.

This is the happiest day of my life! Verizon is FINALLY comming out with some new phones that I would actually buy! I have the 6700 and I personally can not wait to get rid of the brick!

Has anyone heard if Pantech will be releasing a WM6 version of their Mobile Smartphone for the US? I don't like the PDA format and WM5 does not have the horsepower.

I submitted this to engadget mobile a few days back and it was a picture, it was an actual screen of the page. Its been roaming HoFo, PDAPH, and few other places for a couple days.

Does anyone know if the i760 will be able to use GIN? The image of the screen shows an option to "Get Applications" with what looks like the GIN symbol. The link below shows the screen shot of the phone.

No, VZW is working hard to have a get it now capable pda, but it is harder than it looks. Get it now is not owned by vzw, but it is not opperated and sustained by them. It is ran by qualcom that is why the same games and programs don't appear on every phone. The first step towards that is putting vcast music and vz navigator in pdas. then they are going to work from their. hope this answers your question.

I was just searching the MSNBC website and they have the i730 listed as a "MSNBC Multimedia on Mobile" compatible phone. Very interesting... considering it's not even available yet!

Honestly im real happy for Verizon, finally coming out with some decent phones....but its like it alwasys is....They strip their phones of the most things...i was looking to get the Moto Q9m ..only to realize that its a lesser product of the Q9h....it seems like the other carriers always have a better version of the same phone...i think im ready to jump ship..i love Verizons reliability but after 6 years with them....its all about the equipment for me..

Well from the articles and specs that ive read, the Q9h Has 256mb internal the Q9m 64mb, not a big deal since you can always do the Sd memory, Q9m comes with a 1.3 mp and Q9h comes with 2.0,i like taking pictures if they are on a 2.0mp, Q9m will have the Verizon UI albeit in a different layout (Circular)but you can Scroll pretty easy on it...but Verizon UI is horrible..
Camera lens for q9m sticks out alittle in the back,looks cheap, again this is minor but why couldnt they smooth it out..Listen i love verizon, but i just hate knowing that the same model phone my buddy has for Sprint or Att has more functions than mine....otherwise i would be with verizon without thinking twice

I have connects with vzw and from everything i am hearing we are supposed to get about 4-5 new pda's by end of the year. Q9m, Samsung i760, HTC 5800, HTC 6800. Also their is another samsung pda that is supposed to come out, but it dosen't look like it will make it by the end of the year. Also we are going to get the pearl from what I have heard and it will have a camera it is going to be the pearl 2. that is supposed to come out late first quarter early secound quater.

I am confused. Kaiser is going to ATT I think sometime after Sept 10. I've been waiting for the 6800 but I don't know if that UTStarcom is for US. I might go to ATT if Kaiser comes and I can get some assurance the service is ok in the Northeast. I hear Verizon diables more stuff then ATT, is that true? If ATT had some advantage in wifi, data costs, tethering I might have to go with them.

Verizon Wireless sells airtime on their towers. Samsung, UT Starcom, Motorola, Palm, RIM, LG and a few others make phones for Verizon Wireless. It is stupid to say that Verizon Wireless is delaying the release of new phones. Fact is Microsoft has delayed the release of smartphones for all companies while working to get WM6 out, which was supposed to be out in February. The broadcom/qualcom issue has delayed production of new handsets due to their disagreements and they are the source of 3g chipsets for many of the phones used on the Verizon Wireless network. Finally Verizon Wireless upgraded their network to full revision A so all phones need to have that capability now as well. So those phones that should have been released in Q1 were delayed by microsoft, those who did not plan on rev A got the upgrade, and Verizon Wireless just recently agreed to pay on behalf of one company a periodic $40 million until the two settle (they are paying out of their pocket to a company that is suing another company), so that they can get chips and release new phones.
When your TV stops working do you blame the cable/satellite company? Do you complain to them when there is no new upgrades for your TV? Do you call them for help with programming your TV/VCR/ETC? How about the gas company when your stove dont work, or the electric company when a light bulb goes bad. The only reason you can do so with your cell phone carrier is that they have phones designed to work on their network. Be careful what you wish for when you ask for phones that work with any carrier, when that becomes standard practice you will no longer get support from your carrier and instead will be calling an overseas manufaturer to get tech support for your device. Until that happens quit ignorantly blaming your service provider for anything equipment related as the only thing they are selling you is airtime. BTW: carriers make little to no money and often times lose money on the equipment you purchase. Did you read the ATT article that shows that they send all proceeds from the IPhone to Apple in addition to a percentage of the price of the rate plan, ATT makes their money off the rate plan, Apple makes the money from the device.

I dont complain to my cable company when my tv doesnt work, or is outdated, because they do not force me to buy my tv from them. I can go to wal mart, best buy, anywhere really, any brand and any feature set that i want, and use it with my cable tv. Whereas with most cellphone providers, you have to buy a phone from the provider and can only use it on their service. As for the iphone stuff, thats why VZW declined the iphone, they didnt want to make $0 on the sell of a phone and have to pay a percentage of the monthly rate plan to apple. VZW makes money on the selling of phones if you buy a brand new one without a contract, otherwise they make their money on the 2 years of service you just signed up for.

That is such a load of crap Trooth! Have you been to Europe, Asia, Australia or South America lately?? There you can buy any phone you want and use it with any service you want (GSM at least) and they don't seem to have any problems with support for their phones! In fact you can do the same (by law) with AT&T and T-Mobile. Funny how CDMA networks in the US don't have to allow unlocked phones...
And when was the last time you were forced to buy your TV through your cable company or your stove through your gas company?? You don't because all gas stoves are designed to work with all gas companies!! I don't seem to recall any support issues with my stove either...
By the way, I can guarantee you that Verizon makes money on the sale of their phones, albeit not a very large percentage, but they make their bread and butter from the service they charge you.

The law regaurding unlocked phones simply states that it is not a violation of copyright laws to unlock your phone. It does not state that a carrier has to accept your unlocked phone on its network, nor does it state that a carrier must assist you in unlocking your phone. Unlocked phones works with GSM because the sim cards hold all of your network/authentication settings. CDMA network does not use a simcard instead the network settings are programmed directly on the phone and the authentication is based in large part on the phone's ESN which can not be legally changed (that is cloning and against the law, and much much harder to pull off than it was 10 years ago).
Theoretically Sprint, VZW, and Alltel phones will work on each others networks correctly with a software flash if one is available that will set up the correct settings to use the device on the network. However if I put a VZW phone on an Alltel or Sprint network, most of the data services will not work, and the phone will seek out VZW towers first and foremost which may not authenticate and therefor limit the voice services capabilities of the phone, or worse run up roaming charges if not on a no roam plan due to pulling an out of network tower. Beyond that, there are issues with providing support on a phone that you do not carry, do not warranty, and can not guarantee expected level of service with. And that is why CDMA carriers do not activate other carrier's phones.
Only using devices that are designed to work with your network is not the same as being forced to buy your cell phone from the cell phone provider. There are many, many resellers and agents that will sell you a phone that will work on alltel/sprint/vzw. These are called authorized agents. The same people who make GSM phones, make CDMA phones, and you are only limited by the phone options that they provide. If they want to make a CDMA version of a phone they have to decide what carriers they are going to make it for so they can design it to work on those networks. Cell phone carriers do not order equipment manufacturers to make phones for their network, nor do they tell manufacturers to limit the number of options available for the consumer. In most cases the equipment manufacturer designs a phone, and then goes about customizing it for each individual carrier ie moto razr, xv6700, etc. Not all manufacturers make cdma phones, and that is not because cdma companies got together and said we are not going to allow you to make phones for our network.
If the phones do not have a specific hardware feature or spec you are looking for like a 5.0 mega pixel camera, or wifi, that is solely the equipment manufacturers decision. As far as getting data services such as tethered connectivity, vz navigator, vcast, etc on a device that is an issue on the equipment manufacturers end as well on the software designer's end. VZW would rather see their biggest data revenue products such as VZNavigator, VCast, and Tethered access on every single phone that is manufactured. Verizon Wireless, Sprint, Alltel, AT&T, T-Mobile are sre service providers, not manufacturers. That is the point. If motorola makes a phone for Verizon Wireless that does not sell well, Motorola takes the hit. If Motorola makes a phone that does not have a key feature on it that customers can get with another brand of phone, they lose market share. If Verizon Wireless on the other hand is unable to provide a service that T-Mobile can provide, verizon wireless loses customers.
And while there may be a better line up of more advanced phones offered by companies in Europe, or Asia, as I compare current offerings between each of the major US carriers the specs of the phones are very comparable because we are all getting our phones from the same equipment manfuacturers aside from the IPhone. Evidently the cell phone manufacturers in a crazy scheme to maximize profits has done market analysis and found that America's consumers are different than those in Asia. Americans just aren't going to spend $150 more for a phone with a 5.0 mega pixel camera on it.

According to VZ Sales folks... None of their PDAs (including the BB8830 and Moto Q9M) offer Location Based Services (VZ Nav, or GPS for that purpose) at this time. GPS is there for E911 capability only... Disappointing, when they can offer it easily on their regular phones.

GPS on 8830 isnt disabled, you cant disable gps by federal law since 2003-2004 every phone has e911 GPS compliance. The 8830 does however lack a built in application to use the gps that is in the phone for e911. There is the option to use an aftermarket device that connects through bluetooth and then you can use an app for it and save yourself the monthly fees that vznavigator charges.

That is not what you asked dave you asked if it was going to have get it now and the answer is still no!!!!! Multimedia on Mobile Is the ability to purchase games and stuff on the device and that is going to be possible. That is through websites like handago and other pda software sales sites but it is not get it now! Dose that answer your questions!

I looked at a (non working model) of Verizon's smart phone this week at C. City. It had a slide-out keyboard and a phone key pad below the larger screen with silver phone type keys. The screen have a Windows display picture.

I spoke to a Verizon tech a couple days ago and he said the Samsung i760 should be coming out in mid-September according to an email he had received a few days prior. I'm waiting for it, but wish VZW would hurry things up a bit.

Thanks... I guess the only GPS aftermarket apps I know of have you purchase a puck to connect thru Bluetooth and then you have to pay the same comparable monthly fees as the VZ Nav... yes it works, but is clunky... unless there're some I haven't heard of... any suggestions?

I have seen some at handango.com for blackberries, probably a lot of good sources for windows mobile and palm devices through google. I was not aware of a monthly fee though. As far as I could tell you purchase the puck which has the GPS receiver, than you purchase a software package that has the maps. No need for monthly service fees going that route. I had one set up on a lap top about 5 years ago. Pretty easy to set up and that particular one interfaced with Street & Trips or another major software package.
Monthly service fees are normally done for services that will load your maps as you travel to devices with limited memory. Non monthly services generally will have a CD or something that you will have to preload maps onto a memory card because there is too much to fit in phone memory.
