Verizon subscribers fire off 10 billion SMS messages in June
Fingers are busy over at Verizon Wireless where it is being reported that subscribers fired off and received some 10 billion SMS messages in June -- think unlimited messaging is catching on? Another finger-mangling figure saw 200 million Multimedia Messages (MMS) sent in the same period. Those are pretty mind-numbing numbers and are allegedly up 100 percent over September 2006's 5 billion mark. We love it, so congrats Verizon typists, keep sending those missives of love, drink invites, and requests to walk dogs and we'll see if we can best that record in another few months.[Via textually.org]

Let's see... 10 billion texts divided by approximately 50 million customers = an average of 20 texts per customer. It's not so impressive when you look at it that way, hm? The number would be even less if you consider that that includes texts sent and received, meaning that an average customer only sends 10 text messages per month.

Sorry but you're math is a little off or you forgot a 0 because that would be 200 text messages person which is pretty good if every single subscriber really did text regularly. Of course we know not everyone text messages and then there are people who average 1,000 a month.

Thanks PJ, you're right. 200 is actually pretty impressive considering how many people don't send any text messages at all. Thanks for pointing my mistake out.
Looks like I need some sleep :)

you would think there would be less now because the price raised to 15cents each. go figure.
chuck @ Jul 28th 2007 12:52AM
Most people who text regularly have an add-on, which brings the cost of each text down to pennies (or less, if you have unlimited)

ist it up 200%? 5 X 100% = 5.... 5*200% = 10
if it were 100% then it would have matched the previous year?
dunno
Christian @ Jul 28th 2007 12:20PM
No, brad, it is UP 100 percent...they didn't say texting is 100 percent of it's September mark, they said it's UP 100 percent from their September mark (read 100 percent MORE).
weasldude @ Jul 28th 2007 12:24PM
2x = 100% * x + 100% * x = 200%x
PJ @ Jul 28th 2007 1:08PM
@2x = 100% * x + 100% * x = 200%x
Percentages can be confusing if you don't get the right numbers. The article says it's UP 100%.
100% of 5 million = 5 million
5 million(New) + 5 million(100%) = 10 million

Oops. I meant billion obviously but the math is still correct. :-)

Now let's see VZ bring down the price of those messaging add-ons.. by far the most expensive with the least number of messages... except of course the IN bundles..
elgee02 @ Jul 28th 2007 4:37PM
Sorry ignoramus, AT&T is "by far" the most expensive with their add ons, or offer few texts for the money per se.
elgee02 @ Jul 28th 2007 5:47PM
To clarify:
$5 package:
With VZW = 250 txt/pix/flix
With ATT = 200 txt/pix/flix
$10
With VZW = UNL "IN" + 500 txt/pix/flix
With ATT = UNL "M2M" + 200 txt/pix/flix
And both will give you 100% unlimited for $20
In conclusion: YOU ARE WRONG
Thank you and have a wonderful day :-)
Josh @ Jul 28th 2007 4:58PM
Elgee, if you didn't realize...Verizon and AT&T's messaging add-ons are exactly the same price. Who was the ignoramus again?
elgee02 @ Jul 28th 2007 6:01PM
Sigh...
Technically ATT's and VZW's text bundles are the same price but leave it to an ignoramus like you to leave out the fact that VZW offers MORE for the bundles. Jeez dude, do some research.

Sure, maybe I get things wrong occasionally, but at least I don't feel the need to be rude about correcting people's mistakes. Thanks for pointing it out but why do you feel all that other crap was necessary? Just saying, it's not like I said that to offend you or anything.
relax.
