I work in New York every day. I do computer and telephony repair for client in the Bronx and Manhattan. We service about 30 different locations. My coworker I go with has Verizon while I have AT&T. He doesn't have signal in too many places. Most of the time we joke around saying, "if you have signal, I'll pay for lunch". It's become that common. He has to borrow my phone all the time to make calls because he doesn't have signal. I've never had to borrow him.
