We love seeing console and even old-school arcade games being ported to cellphone screens, and
Verizon Wireless has done us a solid in that respect. Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved can now be landed on the screens of those with Verizon's 'Get It Now' service. Want some gameplay deets? The BREW-based Geometry Wars version serves up Untouchable, Survivor, Monster, Trenches, Speed, Multiplier, Feline, and Bomber modes. We call that mobile game playing paradise. Get it now for a one-time $6.49 fee or $3.49 for a month of use. It's now available on 25 Verizon handsets, including the
MOTOKRZR K1m and the
LG enV.

Maybe I am out of the mobile gaming "loop" (if there is a such thing), but I have never heard of this game before.
Heck, I like VZW and I wonder why this is newsworthy. Must be a slow day or something.

Does anybody out there actually use VZW's Get it Now service? It reminds me of AOL service, but slower.
elgee02 @ Jul 26th 2007 1:24AM
Quite a few actually... despite what people who have never used VZW think, there are quite a few popular games to download.
And yeah, I know JAVA would be nice, but seriously only 1% of all mobile user's seriously care about that anyways.

Wow, and here I thought Verizon customers would never see a mobile game that might actually be good.

It just bugs me that you Verizon users can't install third party Java applications. So many games you could just freely download to your cellphone with Java. Not only games but any third party application. GetJar.com has a ridiculously large library of free java apps you can download directly from your phone.
I think Verizon is the only provider that doesn't use Java. Even though Sprint is CDMA, it uses Java technology. But Verizon pushes whatever Qualcomm offers.
I don't know how Geometry Wars will work w/o two methods of direction. The fact that you could use two analog sticks, one controlling movement, and another controlling direction of fire was made the game so original.

Though it is annoying that we Verizon users can not use Java and download ring tones, games etc to our phones and we can also not exchange ring tones, pictures etc through blue tooth do to the block that has been put on our phones I am willing to deal with it do to their higher quality service areas. I know plenty of AT&T and Sprint costumers who have cool games, ring tones, etc but they need them because half the times they have no service to use their phone and they need to occupy themselves some how. That might just be here in NY who knows.

I work in New York every day. I do computer and telephony repair for client in the Bronx and Manhattan. We service about 30 different locations. My coworker I go with has Verizon while I have AT&T. He doesn't have signal in too many places. Most of the time we joke around saying, "if you have signal, I'll pay for lunch". It's become that common. He has to borrow my phone all the time to make calls because he doesn't have signal. I've never had to borrow him.
ir1 @ Jul 26th 2007 9:56PM
I can do the same as Shortfuse. Make crap up:
I have Verizon and I work with a guy who has At&t we go out on sales calls all the time. He almost never has signal on his At&t phone infact one time the phone exploded and he had to go to the emergency room. Also he is always borrowing my phone but he said he is sticking with At&t because he likes the free java games.
I don't know why biased people think people are going to believe there stories.

$6.49 may be a little steep in my opinion in this age of cheap options on the internet but the game is excellent.
