AT&T Video Share goes national, now live in 160 markets
Following an earlier limited rollout to Atlanta, Dallas, and San Antonio, AT&T has now taken its "video call lite" service -- Video Share -- to all 160 of its 3G markets nationwide. Like the service itself, the compatible handset lineup is extraordinarily limited at the moment; only the SYNC, A717, and A727 from Samsung are being officially advertised, though we know the LG CU500v should work as well. Pricing remains unchanged from before: a stiff $4.99 monthly for 25 minutes of usage, $9.99 for 60 minutes, or 35 cents per minute.

I can't believe it's really him!
Martin @ Jul 23rd 2007 2:01PM
I think the 8525 should get an update for it. It's not like it can't handle it or anything. And that is kind of expensive but all I have to say is, at least I ge the option (unlike some other carriers)
chuck @ Jul 23rd 2007 2:03PM
how is this service even remotely useful? wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to just send a video clip via mms? i mean, most of those phones don't have rotating cameras, so it's not like you could have a video conversation with each other even if you both had the same phone.
nando @ Jul 23rd 2007 2:40PM
It's not video calling...it's video sharing...so you don't have to have a camera that always points to you while you're on the phone.
CingulATT needs to get the ball rolling and catch up with the EU...
Martin @ Jul 23rd 2007 4:34PM
I guess you WOULDN'T think it's useful since you probably don't have ATT
PEZ @ Jul 23rd 2007 2:10PM
Is there a specific reason why someone would need to share video while on the phone? There should be a disclaimer for those who cannot multi-task.
Specifically those who are driving, OR walking.
Nando @ Jul 23rd 2007 2:14PM
No, I can't believe it's him.

Tommy, are you getting this? Is that thing on? Tommy, tell me you're getting this!
Eric Fetcho @ Jul 23rd 2007 6:56PM
Oh my god? is that Gary Dourdan from CSI? Better not hold up that video phone in his face, or he might beat the $hit out of you!!!!!

Since when is 160 "markets" considered "National"? 3G isn't even available in every state yet. Work on expanding, like Albany perhaps ;-)
Jonathan Bruha @ Jul 24th 2007 12:46AM
Awesome. The iPhone lacks both the video recording and 3G capabilities to use this service.
Robbie @ Jul 24th 2007 5:52AM
dont forget the LG Trax (LG CU575) also supports video share.
here's a scan from my quick start guide...

Wow i cant imagine how incredibly choppy that bullsh!t would be on ATTs slow data network....tsk tsk tsk ATT is on top now as far as customer base, but untill they invest some serious money into their data network, they wont be able to compete in years to come
ShortFuse @ Jul 24th 2007 10:09AM
Compete with whom? AT&T has the fastest data network. HSDPA is 3.6mbps here. UMTS is 1.8Mbps. On a tethered connection with my V3xx, my download speed peaked 200KBps (1.5mbps) but that's probably because i was on the proxy plan not an ISP plan. EVDO Rev0 peaks at 700kbps and RevA peaks at 1.2mbps. Even UMTS is faster than the CDMA alternatives and HSDPA is even faster than that. I don't know what you're comparing AT&T's data speed to, but whatever it is, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile are slower.
elgee02 @ Jul 24th 2007 8:43PM
ShortFuse:
Your numbers are incorrect dude. EV-DO Rev 0 and A peak at 2 mbps, while Rev 0 averages 400-700 kbps and Rev A averages 600 kbps-1.4 mbps. And it's indisputable that Sprint and VZW's Rev A coverage spank the rear end off AT&T's HSDPA coverage.
trottross @ Jul 24th 2007 10:13PM
LMFAO!! WTF?! WHO LIED TO YOU MY GUY?! In regards to Data Speeds Sprint is fastest is more places, then Verizon, and then Cingular
elgee02 @ Jul 25th 2007 2:33PM
tottross:
Well since VZW and Sprint both Rev-A EV-DO, their speeds are identical. Their websites quote you the same speed, so a little research wouldn't hurt.
Also, both are quite even in coverage for Rev-A as both have around 240 major markets covered, vs the 160 AT&T has for HSDPA.
ShortFuse @ Jul 26th 2007 1:34AM
Yes, the theoretical peak of RevA is 3.1mbps for RevA. just like theoreticalpeak of 3.6mbps for HSDPA. that's if all the connection points were a few meters away. but considering the technology and the fact that EVDO , average RevA speed is 500kbps-800kbps while average HSDPA is 800kbps-1200kbps even with the 1.5mbps cap AT&T has. Because of the way ACKs were implement RevA has an average download of less than 1mbit.
HSDPA is technically better. As much as you want to believe RevA is faster because you have Verizon, it is not. For some companies, HSDPA is on the path to replace landline DSL since the latency and speed is near the same. Sprint and Verizon have coverage going for them but remember AT&T launched 3.5G less than a year ago and are rolling it out faster then Verizon and Sprint did. It's just the way GSM technologies can be upgraded. It was designed for quicker installations. Verizon is aiming for putting EVDO on at least 75% of their towers since for some it will not be possible because of conflicts with the 800mhz frequency. AT&T is working to upgrade 100% (all) towers to HSDPA. Not to mention HSDPA is a data track and with GSM you can talk on the phone and use the internet at the same time (tethered or on the device).
What EVDO does have is the faster upload. HSDPA wasn't meant for fast uploading but that's why AT&T is working on rolling out HSUPA.
elgee02 @ Jul 27th 2007 12:46AM
I don't know where you are getting your average Rev-A download speeds, both Sprint and VZW will tell you the average download speed is 600kbps-1.4mbps right on their website.
And of course AT&T is rolling out HSDPA faster than VZW, THEY HAVE TO! AT&T was late in the game so they are trying to play catch up now.

Ok. Video share is now national, Blackjack WM6 has videoshare. Lets get some official WM6 blackjack hotness already!
For what its worth, this service seems like a dumb way to milk customers that have the US versions of EU 3G phones that can do full on video conferencing. ATT, get with the program already.
tim @ Jul 24th 2007 2:45PM
2 way video calling euro style would be much better. But maybe this will help speed up the launch of some better phones, like the v9 z9. Not everyone wants an iphone, hope they figure that out soon and launch the new motos.
tyleresque @ Jul 28th 2007 1:54PM
I still don't get video calling. Sure, it's a novel idea and I might use it (if VZW had it) to annoy my friends once and a while, but I think wireless carriers would be much smarter improving their digital networks, whether it be EV-DO or HS(D/U)PA for music and other multimedia downloads along with regular voice quality and reliability. I know of infinitely more people who are more worried about being able to text and call reliably than whether or not they can see the person they are calling. Back to basics.
trottross @ Jul 30th 2007 2:21AM
@elgee
Sprint is Faster in more places than verizon PERIOD. As much as you might hate to admit it, sprint is leading the data market right now. We are getting ready to roll out 4g while cingular is still trying to get its customers to 3g.
