Danger Zante / Sidekick Slide in the wild
Boy Genius has scored some hands-on time with the undisputed hottest member of Danger's Hiptop lineup, the so-called "Zante," also known (as best we can tell, anyway) as the Sidekick Slide for T-Mobile. Sharp, we love ya and all, but we've got to hand it to Motorola for producing what looks to be a nice lil' device. Hit the link for the goods.

In what way does this differ from the current sidekick?

I was hoping for the other more spacious keypad layout. Wheres the D pad on the left? Looks like it still has that same aging UI. Hmmm.... This isn't a very satisfying looking device to me. I think I'll hold out til the January Sidekick 4 release.

yeaman this thing is pretty ugly, it hurts my eyes

This is sexy looking. The purple is hot and the dpad looks touch sensitive. And finally there are no ugly cartoon people on the jump screen.

i was hoping it would far less childish but i guess not. it looks like a toy. i had the 2 and the 3 and the 3 was like for kids, and now this looks even more playful. the screen is tiny and the res doesn't look any better. if the slide/zante is a low-end model (which i hope it is), i will pray that the flagship sk looks far better like those fake images a little while back

Those keys look like they'd be incredibly uncomfortable to type on. Also, that is one unattractive device. Wow.

This, in no way, to me, seems appealing. To me, it seems very--too--childish; perhaps this is their demographic, if so, job well done.

Hey look! The SidekickID has hit puberty!

Ya I agree with everyone that this phone is not the best looking device, maybe one of the worst looking sidekicks ever, but being too childish? What are you talking about? The sidekick is marketed towards teenagers, it is not a corporate phone its an sms device. You cant defend thats its to childish when its recommended for the 20 and under crowd. It will never ever look adult like go get an even uglier blackberry or a not so bad palm, but for being directed the way it is this device is not all that bad.

Some of the comments here don't make sense. "The resolution doesn't look any better"? And you would tell that from this photo *how?* (It's reported to be QVGA, which the SideKick line desperately needs.) Yes, the indigo is kinda bright (if the entire thing were black, I'm sure many of you would claim it was Teh Sexiest SideKick Evar), and yes, the keys share T-Mobile's bubbly corporate font, but the target market of this device is teens. It's not *supposed* to be a sleek and sexy smartphone.
By slimming the device (and giving it the requisite glossy plastic) and sharpening the screen, I think Moto did a find job of modernizing the SideKick (even if they had to remove it's "kick" in the process). Is it revolutionary? Hardly. Will it still be overpriced? Probably (although the cheap data might make up for it). Is it what T-Mobile needs to keep their aging SideKick line alive? Only time will tell, but I don't think it will hurt.

What I don't understand is how a SK ID could lack everything a SK3 has and even a 2 (no camera) yet still be the same size! I thought as features such as a camera and bluetooth went so did size.

Not dissing BG here, but for a hands-on, how come there is only an image? That sucks. Include some verbiage if he's played with it ...
Novey @ Jul 10th 2007 9:47PM
this is so ugly. it's so wide. i bet it's going to cost a lot. also, i think it's not going to have 3G data. where is the SIDEKICK RAZR? i like my SIDEKICK 3, but it's bulky.

"Sharp, we love ya and all, but we've got to hand it to Motorola for producing what looks to be a nice lil' device"
WTF is he talking about?!?! The thing is a giant black and purple brick! i dont think you can use "lil' device" as description for this hideous thing.
