Thinking back to when we
first caught wind of it, the turnaround on the ambiguously named
VX8550 Chocolate from LG wasn't that bad -- but the same can't be said of Verizon's other retail introduction today, the midrange Motorola W385. This thing's been kicking around as a rumored Big Red device
since April at the latest -- and yes, we'll admit that our sense of time is a bit skewed, but that's, like,
forever. Anyhoo, pick up the VGA-cam'd, 160 x 128 screen'd W385 for $70 after all the contracts and discounts have been applied; meanwhile, the VX8500 successor can be yours for a nice, round hundie.

I dont know how much longer i can take the vzw crippling, terrible phone, generally awful bs...I might have to leave....can't we even get juix? I mean honeslty....
cebo @ Jul 10th 2007 12:45AM
I mean honestly, if everyone leaves big red will they change? I understand a lot of it is the phone companies not want to spend the money on cdma tech, but coudlnt V do something to try to keep their customers happy???
Graham @ Jul 10th 2007 1:29AM
Because the average person just doesn't care. Sad, but true.
byaah @ Jul 10th 2007 1:34AM
I for one really want Verizon to change, but the question I have to ask is what percentage of their customers are actually tech-savvy enough to want the upgrades we are asking for? If the number isn't really that high, and the majority of subscribers are happy with the POS phones and prices they are fed, why would they spend the time and money to change?
elgee02 @ Jul 10th 2007 4:53PM
"but coudlnt V do something to try to keep their customers happy??? "
That's the thing. By and large, VZW's customers ARE happy (see churn numbers). People pissing and whining over an easy to use UI and bluetooth features hardly anyone uses make up such a small small fraction of VZW's complaints. You got A2DP, OBEX to computer, DUN, and of course headset... right there you've covered 99% of the bluetooth demand.
bigMIKE @ Jul 10th 2007 12:57AM
@Mike: No, it really is only $99.99. Chocolate I is $79.99 on VZW web site. Does anybody even care about Verizon and their crappy phones and crappy rate plans?
elgee02 @ Jul 10th 2007 6:54PM
Lowest Churn and most retail customer adds quarter after quarter... hmmmm...
Yeah, no one gives a crap about VZW at all.
ShortFuse @ Jul 10th 2007 1:17AM
few serious phone enthusiast cares about verizon. most phone enthusiasts have more than 1 phone, which means swapping sim cards, which means GSM.
Tumbleweed @ Jul 10th 2007 1:33AM
Screw these phones - does anyone know when Verizon's going to make the Samsung SCH-i760 available? The last rumour I heard was July 5th, which came and went with no love at all from Verizon. :(
Mike @ Jul 10th 2007 1:34PM
Hearing possibly end of next week or first week of august... *soon* check phdaphonehome's forums
Novey @ Jul 10th 2007 8:04AM
i think these phones are much better because of their new interface. i actually like Verizon's interface because it's easier to navigate than on the other carrier's interface. Verizon would be better if they take off a lot of restrictions like bluetooth OBEX, and transfer photos, and video.
PakieMak @ Jul 10th 2007 8:33AM
Yawn... more boring technology. VZW doesn't know how to step it up a notch because they are run by "over-the-hill" and over weight old men who are interested in finding a deal on their "36hr night" medication.
"We can't give them the iPhone... let's give them more chocolates"...
km destroyer @ Jul 16th 2007 6:29PM
actually....they're not overweight at all.
cb @ Jul 10th 2007 9:09AM
LOL, this is the iphone response? A week and a half later they launch this? And after Seidenberg crowing about their "big response" and all these new phones they were launching to compete with it. So six months to get ready, this is what we get?
Other people's networks will get better, their pricing already is, but apparently Verizon is permanently hopeless on device innovation and customer choice. I left and ain't going back. Hope they get their act together for those of you that are with them.
VZWguy @ Jul 10th 2007 11:50AM
4 gigs worth of memory...just like an Iphone
Stereo BT...Iphone doesn't do stereo BT, but tell em again how verizon cripples the average user's Bt experience.
1.3 MP camera...sounds familiar
flash interfaces, meaning you can change the menu style from the old verizon one, to many on the device, so there goes the old "verizon menu only sucks" theory.
so far everything you have brought up has been refuted, sure the PP haven't changed in a while, but as a company why change what is working? has the net adds for verizon dropped off? have they fallen form the top 1-2 slots as the nations biggest post pay customer base? they just intorduced new premium plans for customers to get more service out of thier phones.
This isn't the answer to the Iphone, hell there isn't really any answer. the iphone has a unique interface....really that is ALL. everything else that thing brings to the table was done 4-5 years ago on many different devices. by the time apple gets it right on the 4-5th gen of iPhone..there will be 2-3 other companies who have made a replica of it and it will do just as well. but there is still a large segment of the customer base who would just as soon get a Q2(stereo BT, fully unlocked BT, 4 gig memory, 1.3 MP camera, REAL keyboard, and I don't have to send crap to apple whenever the phone breaks and rent out another device like some kind of idiot).
so now that all the uninformed claims and misinformation have been shot down...any other wild ideas?
cebo @ Jul 10th 2007 11:57AM
Yeah, its simple. I for one don't care about the iPhone, I think its an overhyped load of crap. But just because the iPhone is dogcrap doesnt mean that verizon should be satisfied sitting on its hands. If they want to be considered a leader in their industry, they have to do something innovative. The chocolate 2 is not innovative. The same UI for the last decade is not innnovative. Crippling bluetooth is just plain rediculous. Forever stalling phone releases is simply silly. The CDMA tech is somewhat limiting, but Verizon should at the very least be getting the newest and best they can from Korean manus like LG. They use CDMA in Korea and have some innovative phones. Just because the iPhone isnt all that and a bag of chips doesnt mean I should have to put up with verizon's BS.
cebo @ Jul 10th 2007 11:51AM
Verizon makes my head want to explode.
VZWguy @ Jul 10th 2007 1:15PM
It was just stated how the vast majority of users enjoy the common UI. anmd also was stated how they have flash Uis for you to change it to whichever one works best for you. so that argument has been moot for the last 2 years since the 8300 offered it.
you want new and innovative?
like the new shine series?
or the new smartphone launches they have panned?
or how about the many new features you cna get on more phones, Email options, navigation, mobile IM...they continue to lead the pack with most versitile phones.
however you are correct, they don't have a game changing phone on the horizon. last year they released the Q, this year they are releasing several smartphones, the Q2, the BB pearl, the samsung, many different looks and many different phones. but hey, what do they have, just fully unlocked BT, flash Uis, all the things the haters complain about blindly but never acctually do the research to find out have been outdated as bad as thier arguments against the devices.
Evan P @ Sep 21st 2007 4:58PM
WHAT??? BB Pearl is coming to Verizon?!?! Should I switch carriers? This is so totally amazing!
Oh.. no no, hold on.
I got my T-Mobile BB Pearl over a year ago. Nice.
I don't understand everyone's negative disposition to T-Mobile. They have good phones, are investing in new frequencies all over the country, are close to completing their high-speed data network, and sure as hell have on of the best customer service departments.
bob the builder @ Jul 10th 2007 4:59PM
Here is my response. Since it is lengthy, I will divide it into sections.
1. The UI
You said that the vast majority of users enjoy the common UI. I beg to differ, because you should have said that all users enjoy the common UI.However, don't misinterpret what I'm saying. There's an equally large amount of people who hate the common UI and have left VZW because of it; thus they have stopped being "users of the common UI". To tell you the truth, there are no users who dislike the common UI because they have left in disgust.
As far as the flash UI goes, it really isn't "different". Sure it gets rid of those bars, but can you actually reorder the menu icons? No. Does it do anything besides changing the color and the effects? No. Can you make your own themes? No.
And what's the point in getting a new phone when the menu looks the same? Not much, and it pretty much eliminates the thrill you get when you get a new phone.
2. Innovation
As far as the Shine series being "innovative", there's nothing really innovative about a phone with:
A)a crappy WAP browser
B)a 2 MP camera (Samsung can back me up on that with their 8 MP Asian phones)
C)crappy MMS messaging where you can't send song clips back and forth
D)the menu you call customizable because you can change colors and effects
E)the fact you can't use this phone out of the good ole' US of A (sure they have CDMA in Asia, but I highly doubt there's a company over there that will let you change ESN's, and I believe they don't use BREW over there).
3. "Versatile-ness"
Here is what you said "or how about the many new features you cna get on more phones, Email options, navigation, mobile IM...they continue to lead the pack with most versitile phones."
1)Email options are available on all phones, I'm sorry but they don't lead the pack in that.
2)Why would you pay for navigation? Use MapQuest. Leading the pack is iffy on that.
3)Mobile IM is available on nearly every phone today. Plus, many have GoogleTalk... so, Verizon doesn't lead the pack there either.
4)Verizon does not have the most versatile phones. They are money makers for verizon with Get It Now icons everywhere. Then, there's the menu. You can't change the basic layout (you can in Motorola's JUIX interface), you can't change folder names (you can in Motorola's JUIX interface), and you can't move folders anywhere (you can in Motorola's JUIX interface). Plus, they don't allow you to send MMS messages with song attachments, and the majority of phones do not have all the bluetooth profiles enabled.
4. Haters?
You mention haters complaining blindly "without any research". Well, all of my arguments are presented with research, and every bit is true (and contradicts everything you say). Plus, I believe you are the one trying to support your own company blindly. The last time I checked, most Verizon phones do NOT have fully unlocked Bluetooth, and Flash UI's just plain suck- have you ever used an actual manufacturer's interface? To compare one of their interface's to verizon's is an insult (to the manufacturer).
Thus everything you have said has been disproven by myself. I can, however, tell you one thing verizon DOES HAVE...
CUSTOMER SERVICE REPS WHO CAN'T DO MATH
http://media.putfile.com/Verizon-Bad-Math
elgee02 @ Jul 10th 2007 7:34PM
And yet, when it all boils down your research is based off nothing more than your opinion and what you speculate many other's opinions to be.
And please, like none of the other carriers have dumbass employees.
If SO MANY people just hated VZW's very easy to learn and use UI, VZW's churn would be where T-Mobile's or Sprints is... but no, VZW leads the industry quarter after quarter. VZW also has been adding more new retail customers quarter after quarter. Yeah dude, that UI must SUCK if people are joining and staying with VZW the way they are.
And please, that whole "but you can't use CDMA in other countries!" is the only thing you gsm fanboys have. I admit, if and when I do travel to Europe it would be nice to have the peace of mind to have a working phone in case of emergency... but honestly for me and millions upon millions of Americans who DON'T travel overseas or hardly ever, that is a non issue.
If you personally don't like the VZW UI, that's understandable. I had an old Motorola 3 years ago, I hated that UI. Opinion buddy.
Oh, and I don't know what you're talking about with VZW's MMS not sending song clips or sounds, my enV does it wonderfully.
And finally... Bluetooth. Yeah VZW doesn't allow full 100% bluetooth, I know and there isn't a good reason either. BUT all of VZW's newer phones can do OBEX to computer, Dial Up Network (DUN), and now most new ones do A2DP as well.
bigMIKE @ Jul 10th 2007 9:00PM
Look, Verizon is doing well because they spent money in the past (Thank you, Vodafone) and were aggressive in the retention department with their new every two program. Also, let's face it; they have done a wonderful marketing job. The truth is, in the cities where there is dual coverage between T-Mobile & VZW, T-Mobile wins all of the awards 80-90 % of the time. VZW has made a tremendous investment using a very, very old technology and maximized it the most they can but the truth of the matter is, they are severly constrained when it comes to their network capacity in the 800Mhz band. That frequency they use is very different from the 850Mhz that at&t uses on many, many levels. I agree, CDMA used to be where it was at, but contrary "to them sleeping at the wheel", they were investing TONS of money in MANY categories. Sprint actually has a clearer voice and data network than VZW either Sprint has coverage. Remember people, PAC-TEL WIRELESS infrastructure is powering VZW's "ADVANCED" network: that's 20+ years of aging tech. To anyone that disagrees, disputes, look into Qualcomms history a little deeper and into Airtouch's.
detroit313 @ Jul 10th 2007 11:34PM
I totally agree. But WHEN is the game changing phone/phones going to come out? After another carrier gets 500,000 more subscribers?
