HTC's Advantage X7501 lands at CompUSA website
You knew this beauty was coming, and you've even had ample time to stare it down and get acquainted, but now you can get that mousing finger ready as the HTC Advantage X7501 has snuck onto CompUSA's website. Currently listed as "Coming Soon," the sale page doesn't lend any hints as to when it'll actually be available to purchase, but we are assured that it'll run $899.99 whenever that time does come. As expected, it'll come pre-loaded with Windows Mobile 6 Standard, a 624MHz CPU, built-in 8GB hard drive, miniSD expansion slot, integrated GPS, Bluetooth / WiFi, a three-megapixel camera, TV / VGA outputs, and just about everything else you'd need in a UMPC / cellphone hybrid. Hold tight folks, it's almost here.[Thanks, Naval]

Yep it has WM6 Pro.. and Gawd I wish that had EV-DO :)
Adam Lein @ Jul 5th 2007 5:35PM
Also the photo there is the HTC Advantage X7500. The X7501 has WM 6 Pro and no front-facing camera. The X7500 has WM 5, and a front-facing camera.

It's in stores right now, they get in Monday.
Anonymous @ Jul 5th 2007 5:57PM
It's in stores as of Tuesday morning, pricing according to inventory management systems confirms $899.99. Limted quantities are available in stores. No more than about 5 at most locations from what I've been told.
bell boy @ Jul 5th 2007 6:03PM
No more then about 3 per store actually, and at least 2 stores have already sold out.
keithwwalker @ Jul 5th 2007 7:08PM
Whats the chance of a future version with a solid state hard drive (flash drive)?
If they build it with SSD, I will buy!!!
Dan @ Jul 5th 2007 7:23PM
Because 8gb + microSD isn't enough?
keithwwalker @ Jul 5th 2007 11:59PM
"Because 8gb + microSD isn't enough?"
No, think battery consumption, with ssd flash drive, there are no moving mechanical parts to spin = greatly increased battery life!
Luis @ Jul 5th 2007 7:26PM
yeah i work at a compusa in miami and ive been playin with this since tuesday, we only have THREE and were one of the top 3 stores
plh2034 @ Jul 5th 2007 8:07PM
1. Aren't these things supposed to get smaller over time?
2. Does it come with a pocketbook to carry it?
3. When will the MinMo devices come with decent battery life?
Begging for a CDMA/EV-DO Device with...
A FULL HTML browser
Atleast an 8GB hard drive with SD or miniSD expansion
iPhone sized screen
iPhone battery life
WinMo program flexability
And GPS
Willing to pay top dollar.

Not to say that this would be the most pocketable phone in the history, but just compare the spec.
Robbie @ Jul 6th 2007 12:45AM

Mike Stump @ Jul 6th 2007 11:44AM
Hunk of junk. I hold onw in my hands right now about to be packaged up and returned. Played with for about a week and the device is too big and too clunky. If it were half the size then it might work. I'll stick with my Sony UX.
Mike Stump @ Jul 6th 2007 12:20PM
Oh and by the way, no GPS. It will take an external receiver to get anything related to GPS.
keithwwalker @ Jul 6th 2007 1:50PM
I don't believe you!
You a hater!
http://www.america.htc.com/about/pressroom/03-26-2007.html:
"In addition, the HTC Advantage enables powerful navigation capabilities with built-in GPS navigation."
Jesus of Suburbia @ Jul 6th 2007 6:17PM
Umm, apparently Mr. Stump forgot to take the device out of the box and actually look at it before returning it.
keithwwalker @ Jul 6th 2007 9:16PM
Yeah, and he complained about size of the unit, and said he will stick with the Sony UX.
Sony UX dimensions:
Size: 150 x 95 x 32.25-38.1 [mm]
Weight: 1.2 lbs / 544g
HTC Advantage dimensions:
Size: 133.5mm (L) x 98mm(W) x 16mm(T)
Thickness WITH keyboard: 20 mm
- 359g with battery pack
It has a smaller volume and weighs less than the UX, and it is a phone, which the UX isn't...
Mike Stump @ Jul 9th 2007 10:33AM
your right the UX is much larger but I wouldn't hook it on my belt and try and talk through it. This device seems to try and meld the UMPC with a phone. The size makes it difficult to carry in anything other than a backpack, and what good is that when the thing starts ringing? After a call to HTC i discovered there is no GPS software installed on the phone. The guy at HTC said there was a typo in the manual to that effect.
Keith Walker @ Jul 9th 2007 6:09PM
That's dissappointing to hear, no GPS, no video conference phone.
I am resigned to the fact that a bluetooth unit would be almost mandatory to use as a phone, but if there isn't a full suite of GPS software/hardware, might as well get the euro version - an unlocked euro version could work in the states, right?
Mike Stump @ Jul 10th 2007 10:17AM
I've never tried a euro version in the states but as long as the imei number is the same length we use in the states I don't see where there would be a problem. i have unlocked several phones for use on different carriers and they all worked fine.
bdarras @ Jul 15th 2007 11:02AM
I've read on other forums that the X7501 sold at compusa did not have a GPS. Compusa tech support say that from their manual there is no GPS.
gradey seasons @ Jul 17th 2007 2:51PM
The device X7501 has GPS. It doesnt include software, because most GPS providers like telenav http://ota.telenav.com/ota/htc charge a monthly service fee. You can download Google maps for free though.
Sid Cooper @ Aug 8th 2007 5:51PM
The X7501 is not for mere mortals. If you are a SERIOUS Dell Axim X50v/51v power user, then you will find nirvana in the X7501. HTC manufactured the Axim for Dell. This device is the logical progression of the Axim.
I'm an Axim power user. I've added custom memory upgrades, bluetooth keyboard, mouse, gps, 8GB mirodirve, 2GB MiniSD, and a ton of games, movies, music, applications and utilites to make my life easier. I hope I don't lose a stripe over this, but yes, I carried my Dell in a man-purse (heavy-duty leather, very macho). My Ax was ALMOST perfect. I longed for a bigger screen. More importantly, I wanted faster data while mobile. Most places in my area (Baltimore-Washington Metro) charge for access to their hot spots. So I found myself using my Razr as a bluetooth modem to get to the net on my Ax. Not the optimum solution, but better than nothing.
The X7501 has the bigger screen. It has 3.5G data. Most of my area is 3.5G, so now I pretty much have DSL-like bandwith ALWAYS. The X7501 is compatible with the new MiniSD HC cards. It's Bluetooth 2.0. Contrary to some of the posts at this site - the X7501 DOES have built-in GPS! I use iGuidance 4.0 which works perfectly. I also use Google Maps because it has real-time traffic. I have a sling box pro which means I have 150 cable channels on my 5" VGA screen on demand. I use Orb to remote into my media server at home, so I have access to 130GB of mp3 files (so much for iPhone). I also listen Howard Stern and Bubba the Love Sponge on the go with SiriusWM5 shareware. With my Jawbone headset and Microsoft Voice Command, I'm a regular Borg drone, accessing the collective across space, at the speed of thought.
I do have some issues with this device. I was one of Amazon's first customers. The device I received had pre-production firmware installed. When I put the device in sleep mode it would not wake up without a soft reset. Fortunately, HTC US has great customer support. I called the help line. The tech was well versed with the device. He sent me a link to download the latest firmware. Flashing the rom was no problem. This corrected my power handling issues but they also changed the bluetooth stack. Now my ThinkOutSide Universal Bluetooth Keyboard and Travel mouse don't recognize the stack. IGo.com still hasn't updated drivers so for the time being, I'm mouseless and stuck with using the X7501's smaller but usable keyboard. I haven't been able to find a MAME that has been ported to the X7501. This is causing serious Zaxxon withdrawal pains. Worst of all, Pulse Interactive hasn't ported Quake MObile over yet.
The biggest drawback is the magnetic connectors for the keyboard and main unit. Both the keyboard and the body have powerful magnets embedded that automatically align the keyboard to the body. Trust me, you must remain ever vigilant that you never sit your wallet on top of this device. The magnets are powerful enough to erase every magnetic strip in your wallet after just a few milliseconds of exposure. The same holds true for the T-Mobile SideKick II, which also uses a magnetic clasp.
In the grand scheme of my life, my X7501, warts and all, has quickly become a linch pin in my everyday life. It is a powerful computing platform with unequalled flexiblity. In fact, its 624Mhz Intel CPU is more powerful than the first three laptops I puchased. Since I've been carrying my Ax everywhere for almost three years, carrying the X7501 is simply not an issue with me. Between my old Ax and my new X7501, I haven't needed to purchase a laptop in 3 years. I don't think the iPhone crowd will be able to say the same ting three years from now.
If you are one of those people whose VCR has the time flashing 12:00, look at something else. Heck, if you still own a VCR you should look for something else! This is a sophisticated device designed specifically for geeks and other power users. This is not the iPhone crowd. This device is so much more than an iPod that makes phone calls. For all that a UMPC is supposed be, the X7501 is actualy a better solution. It runs an operating system that was designed specifically for small screens. UMPCs run an operating system that was designed specifically for screen 15" and larger. Trying to put 5 gallons of crap in a 3 gallon bucket never was a good idea- and it still isn't.
Kelly @ Aug 12th 2007 11:01AM
Thank you for this post. I have used my Axim X50v since they first came out and have never found anything to replace it (until possibly now). My biggest issue is the magnet. I am a woman and carry my Axim in my purse. Probably not the place for this thing unless I put it in a lead case. So I am still on the fense. But thank you for your post.
Travis @ Sep 16th 2007 8:29AM
Bravo, Mr. Cooper! What an excellent post. It's funny, your iPhone references. I just switched from an iPhone to the 7501 and I agree with you totally....they are very opposite devices. The power this 7501 wields is uncanny and unmatched by anything I can think of. The only drawback, like others has stated, is the size.
This is my first 'unlocked' device and I'm really enjoying the freedom. I have a Verizon aircard that I use to tether data. With this device, I use the bluetooth PAN and connect with HSDPA speeds. Incredible! I'm also loving the A2DP profile. While a lot of phones sport this feature, strangely, my iPhone did not. My only guess is Steve's holding back for Leopard. I'm sure Apple will release their own set of stereo bluetooth headsets.
Thanks again for your post!
Travis

Just a quick question for someone who may know. Is the X7501 available without a camera? (I cannot carry a camera at Work.) I have been unable to find an answer on-line, nor has HTC responded to my E-mails.
