iPhone rate plans revealed, at-home activation announced

In more good news -- well, depending on how you look at it -- Apple has announced that customers will be able to activate their new phones via an iTunes sync, saving them from spending even an extra minute in an AT&T store they will have surely have grown to despise. On the down side, if you do have problems with your activation -- remember those initial iTunes / Vista issues? -- it'll be just that much more difficult to troubleshoot as you and two million other frustrated users flood AT&T's customer service line simultaneously. Good times, folks, good times.
Update: That's some, ah, good journalism there Lou. Apparently there are actually six packages each available for both of the individual and family plans, as reader Christopher K. noticed by simply clicking on the "More Minutes" button at the bottom of those plans' respective tabs here. Heavy users will be also be able to choose from 2,000, 4,000, or 6,000 minute bundles for $120, $170, and $220, respectively, with families getting 3,000, 4,000, or 6,000 minutes for $160, $210, and $310, also respectively.

Wow. When the higher data price rumors were floating around, I had been getting ready to say "forget it, do I really need data service that bad?" but this seems affordable. I'm not lining up on Friday -- I'm going to need to wait until the reviews come in -- but Apple & AT&T have found a price point that'll get me on a data plan. Bye, bye Verizon!

Yeah I feel the same way as convergenista. The price plans are perfect, unlimited data, comes with texts, a bunch of night and weekend minutes, and roll over. This costs the same as my verizon plan WITHOUT the unlimited data. I'll be trying this out soon as I get the moolah.
jeepnautique @ Jun 26th 2007 10:11AM
depending on how much they charge to bump up my sms messages, this plan could cost me less than what i've been paying for a plan where i used no data.
Piprkle @ Jun 26th 2007 10:18AM
I wonder how activation through iTunes will work if you need you number ported from another carrier?
Joe @ Jun 26th 2007 10:32AM
watch the video on the apple site - it is in true apple fashion - easy as pie!

Hmm lets see. With my Sprint Sero plan for $30 a month I get 500 minutes, unlimited Evdo data, unlimited text messages, Unlimited N&W starting at 7 and of course m2m and the rest of that jazz minus rollover. As a former Cingular customer I guess it's not bad for them but I think I'll stick with my 6800 that has a keyboard and lets me install my own software.

Seriously, can we stop with XXX is a worse deal than SERO already? We get it, Sprint's employee referral offer is poorly guarded.

How do I find that table pictured? It looks like an at&t site, but the read link goes to apple. I tried to find it through at@t, but no luck. I want to see the existing customers tab.
jman @ Jun 26th 2007 11:22AM
This is from the apple site, go to apple.com, click on the iPhone tab at the top. On the left hand side you will se the AT&T logo with iPhone rate plans. click there and you will find the table.

So basically, it's AT&T's current cell rates with a mandatory Media Max 200 plan tacked on. That's about what I expected to be honest.
Iscariote @ Jun 26th 2007 3:48PM
The iPhone deal gets you $5 a month off of regular serve + Media Max 200.
Ryan @ Jun 26th 2007 12:53PM
WTF 60 bucks! I was looking at 40! That is fucking ridiculous.
Travis @ Jun 26th 2007 3:24PM
I think its quite reasonable. Its less than I expected. Its kind of a shame they force you to buy the data package, since I have Wifi at school, but I expected that.
Its not going to make me switch from Sprint SERO though, thats too good of a deal to get rid of.
GoodWill8675 @ Jun 26th 2007 5:04PM
WHOA! ONLY 200 texts a month???
what if you use well over 6000?
crap, im screwed
i cant help it that im so popular

Robbie @ Jun 27th 2007 12:33AM
you can upgrade to unlimited for an extra cost
Donald @ Jun 26th 2007 10:51PM
$20 added on for unlimited text.
GoodWill8675 @ Jun 28th 2007 12:46AM
wow thats uber expensive!
Owen Cropper @ Jun 27th 2007 4:30PM
Not sure others have seen or heard this, but if you are getting a corp discount on a pooled plan and simply want to replace one of the phones on the account with an iPhone (for the reported $20 data plan) you can not do this without losing your corp discount on the entire pool. So for me getting the iPhone for $20/month was a no brainer but to pay that PLUS lose the discount (around $30-35) for me is a non starter. Very weird that this is being done. I am OK with no discounts for the device, but here I am a $200 month ATT customer and they have really, really pissed me off. So no iPhone for me till policy changes.... (They literally suggested I get a separate account just for the iPhone (even stupider!)....

Well your wonderful data package is on a data network 1/8 the speed of verizon wireless and sprint. Have fun cruzing the internet at speeds almost twice that of dial up.
