AT&T euthanizes Nokia E62
Time flies, doesn't it? Seems like just yesterday we were celebrating S60's triumphant return to US carriers on the wings of the lovely Nokia E62 -- but in the blink of an eye, the landmark handset has been taken from us, seemingly before its time. Though the N75 might satisfy some of the E62's target demo, the QWERTY will be sorely missed and will likely drive some to Windows Mobile or BlackBerry alternatives. For what it's worth, the carrier's saying that the coming months will bring new equipment "that will succeed the E62," but whether that foretells an E62i (or any other Nokia-sourced hardware, for that matter) is another question entirely.

Or a US e90 perhaps :)

Good riddance. I made the mistake of buying one of these and now I can't wait to get rid of it. While it does everything, it can't do a single thing right! And unfortunately that includes making phone calls.

E-gads. Me too! It was a great looking phone at a great price that promised the stars and delivered - not much at all.
The OS is slow as molasses, third party app prices are sky high, no multi-tasking. Sure it syncs with Outlook but the user experience is just terrrible all the way around. Proprietary everything. No "Today" like screen. Built-in MP3 player sucked. Proprietary everything (opps, said that but it bears repeating).
I tried calling them to get a bluetooth stereo headphones they had advertised on their European website and they could tell me is not to buy it since they couldn't guarantee it would work. The headphones were advertised for the E61 which IS THE SAME PHONE 'cept without WiFI. And NO ONE would gaurantee it would work with my phone. I said can't somebody from Nokia USA call Nokia UK and answer my question, they're response was "No, we are not allowed to do that."
I wonder if AT&T will spread some iPhone love to those of us who want to ditch this phone and get a Windows Mobile? Maybe they will be so drunk from all the money rolling in from the Apple/Mac zealots lining up to pay an arm and a leg for the iphone and the requisite plans that they will let a few of us loyal customers get a phone they would want?
Probably not.

This would've sold like mad had at&t (Cingular) not removed the wifi capabilities. Lets hope that they do pick up the e90 or the e65 w/ us 3G and Wifi intact. I'm pessimistic that they will though :-(

I also had the E62, what good would wifi have been? the OS is slow. keyboard is hard to read outdoors and indoor for that matter. The good thing about it was it's solid construction. My two cents. The E90 maybe.
Ozbone @ Jun 21st 2007 11:58AM
Too bad but but not too surprising. Say what you will it has to beat using Windows Mobile.
Aaron @ Jun 21st 2007 6:29PM
No, Ozbone, it doesn't. It has to be one of the worst OS's ever. Windows Mobile, Palm and Blackberry run circles around the Symbian S60 OS anyday, anywhere, any phone.
Nick @ Jun 22nd 2007 1:12AM
Aaron -- maybe if you played with S60 a bit more, you'd change your tune, as it does have a Today like screen, a lot of freeware, great J2ME support, the whole kit and kaboodle.
I just picked up an E61i to replace my 6682. What a fantastic device.
Aaron Walker @ Jun 22nd 2007 1:35AM
Sorry Nick, I can't agree with you.
But let me qualify that by saying I am coming at it from a Windows Mobile perspective.
When I say Today screen plug -in, I mean the ability for a third party app to be the shell for the OS. According to the only useable PIM app I could find from SBSH they said in their forum, Symbian won't allow that. There is very little way to customize the provided built in calendar.
I've searched for freeware, couldn't find any that I found remotely useful. In contrast, my Palm and Pocket PCs were loaded with many free or low-cost third party apps that extended the functionality of those devices (ebook reader, games, PIM enhancements, MP3 players, etc).
Palm couldn't do multi-tasking either (which is why I switched to Windows Mobile) but at least the Palm OS was faster than the Symbian OS.
On the E62, to access the functions, it was click and then wait .. and then, oh, there it goes.
I absolutely hate there is no multi-tasking. You can only do one thing at a time on this phone.
I got caught up in the hype when Cingular (now AT&T) offered the phone for free looking for a way to merge my PDA and cell phone into one device. This looked like the answer, found out it wasn't.
Now all I use the thing for is making phone calls and some very, VERY simple and basic PIM, but I thought I was going to get so much more.
I wish I could have sold you my E62.

I just got one of these, and I'm quite happy. I'm a Mac user and the iSync Bluetooth integration with iCal and Address Book just works amazingly well. Application installs are extremely simple. It's cheap, and it isn't Microsoft. (I was a loyal Microsoft user as a developer for several years, but I'm all better now...)
I hope they replace it with something that has WiFi, like the E61. That would make me very happy indeed.
Alain @ Jul 28th 2007 5:13PM
I've been using the E62 for almost a year and I'm satisfied with it. It's not perferct (then again, no phone I've seen is) but it does most of what I need: get my business email (IMAP), calendar, contacts (with sync using industry standard SyncML, not M$ or Blackberry proprietory crap). It runs my GPS Navigation app, Google Maps, Google Email client, got a great web browser as well as the WAP browser and I'm able to use it as a bluetooth modem for my laptop. The screen is great looking too.
So, I'm sorry to say, I don't share the purely negative reviews. Sure it could be better (faster OS would be nice), but for the price (it was around $120 with a Cingular contract), it's a great phone. Oh and as far as multitasking. If by multitasking, you mean being able to use more than one app at once, it does that just fine (up to available memory, it's a little phone not a 3 lbs laptop, for crying out loud!).
