YouTube hits Apple TV today, headed for the iPhone as well
The wait is over, and you can finally train that Apple Remote of yours on videos of passable karaoke, mind numbing video blog confessions and the genius that is Daxflame. That's right, YouTube is hitting the Apple TV today, an announcement that is totally overshadowed by a little surprise Apple packed into the press release: YouTube is the iPhone mystery app. Sure, it might not be GPS or anything useful like that, but Apple seems to be aware of our addiction and is happy to oblige. YouTube videos can be viewed through an Apple-built application on the phone, and will be encoded in H.264 by YouTube to improve video quality and battery life on mobile devices. They'll have 10,000 videos ready by June 29th, and should complete transcoding the collection by this fall. Videos can be viewed over WiFi or EDGE, we don't want to even imagine the painful load times of the latter.

YouTube is already available on phones since last week on http://m.youtube.com I wonder if they use the same site for the iPhone or if they will have a customized client. They really should release a Java client that plays videos directly from the site instead of having to deal with codecs playing correctly on every type of mobile device.

I think it will be a dedicated platform at least from the perspective that the videos are being encoded in H.264 according to the press release. I read somewhere else as well that now it looks like YouTube is going to have some videos in 3 different formats (Flash for the main website, 3gp for m.youtube.com, and H.264 for the iPhone).

If Apple were to add Last.fm and/or Pandora to the Apple TV I'd actually consider getting one.

Wow, watching YouTube videos over a 56-100kbps GPRS data connection. Awesome.

Big deal, my Treo 755p plays the new m.youtube.com content perfectly, no choppyness or anything. Suck it, iPhone.

WOW!! now your telling me I can watch crappy quality videos anywhere I go?! sweet, and it will only cost me $500 to buy it?? sign me up!

Right but your Treo is not as sexy as the iPhone and Palm is like the LG of PDA's nowadays. Has no WiFi and its most likely the Sprint's network with "broadband like" speeds, right.
elgee02 @ Jun 20th 2007 4:05PM
Those "broadband" speeds beat the living pants off the iPhone's EDGE speeds, that's for damn sure.
Malatesta @ Jun 20th 2007 4:36PM
As soon as someone uses the word "sexy" when talking about a freaking telephone I know the argument is already over.
As far as Palm being the "LG" that is over-stated. Build quality on Treos is actually very high in comparison to HTC, Moto or Samsung which automatically makes it higher than "LG". Have you ever held one?
Sprint's EvDo/Rev A is a much better value ($15 unlimited?) and blows EDGE away. End of story.
jabber_wolf @ Jun 25th 2007 5:05PM
Your right, I like the Sprint Mogul more... can do more.
Also can, like most browsers view FLASH content which basically prohibits the iphone from viewing much of the web!
Oh and it also has GPS with sprint's service.
Oh and its a hell of alot faster
Oh and I can swap out MicroSD cards.
Oh - it OWNS iPhone!!!
