O2 spins out the "Cocoon"

We're an admittedly jaded group when it comes to new mobile tech and handsets but, O2's new Cocoon has us sitting up and taking notice. This winsome flipper sports an LED display hidden behind what appears to be an opaque housing that lights up to show song info, caller ID and the like. Featuring a pretty slick control panel on the side, 2GB of internal memory, expandability via MicroSD, Bluetooth A2DP, and a 2 megapixel shooter with flash, it does seem to be packin' all the necessary bits and bobs. In the radio department, we find triple-band GSM / GPRS and 3G -- no details on the frequencies offered here, but we can guess they will be Eurocentric. Look for it on O2 UK in August for a wallet-stinging $590 off contract.

These things are already overpriced and going in the wrong direction. Come on, they're phones. Make it $50 and no contract and I'll buy one IIF you throw in 500 free minutes. Same goes for the iPhone. The iPhone should be FREE with a 1 year contract at about $30/mo, or cost about $100 plus maybe $10/mo for data with calls extra. Existing prices for this technology are bull*&%$.

ha....haha..... then watch all the manufacturers and carriers crumble because they're giving away iphones and feature-packed 3g phones...
even as a customer i find that pretty rediculous. and having worked for tmobile, if i were selling phones like that for those kind of prices i'd be in debt with the carrier rather than getting a paycheck.
do you know what cost is?

OK, my suggestion is a little extreme, but come on, you can get a full-size laptop for $400. Comparatively speaking, even the fanciest cell phones should cost about $100 max. If a cell phone could replace my laptop, that would be a different story. For max value you need a full size keyboard, therefore cell phones will never replace a laptop.

The '$590' price quoted for this phone is immaterial, since this phone will be free on reasonably priced 12 and 18 month contracts anyway, like 99% of phones released in the UK.
We hardly ever pay for our handsets, unlike in America. As a side note, if the iPhone is released here for 300/$600 with a 2 year contract attached, it will crash and burn.
