iPhone spotted in public?
Could this be the first true and proper iPhone sighting in public? Like, for really reals this time? The pic was snapped by Engadget pal Mark Trammell on the CalTrain -- which we know many an Apple employee uses to commute from SF to Cupertino. But with the hype this device has, we almost wouldn't put it past some San Francisco supergeek to cruise around with a faux iPhone just to raise some eyebrows boost his geek cred.

Update: We talked to Mark further -- it was definitely an iPhone, no chance of being a fake. He said its user was flipping through songs and playing back music on the device. Note to iPhone obsessives: ride the CalTrain more often.

That looks a lot, from that angle anyway, like Mike Matas, who works for Apple designing interfaces.

I agree ... that does look like Mike Matas.

That HAS to be an apple employee... I mean, just LOOK at him. Black clothes, skinny, cool slacker facial hair. Apple, Apple, Apple.
This should get Engadget's Official Apple Rumour Seale D'Approvale.

WHO CARES? Seriously. WHO CARES?
How does this have any impact or bearing on ANYTHING? An Apple employee with an iPhone two weeks before the launch?!?! Sure sounds newsworthy to me! I sometimes get the feeling that all of your iPhone coverage is just a large scale troll.

2 Questions:
Having never been on the CalTrain, this picture seems to be taken at a weird angle, are they layed out with offset aisles or was Mark, pretending to put something in the overhead bin?
Second, isn't the headphone jack on the wrong side?
just random questions I had when looking at the pic.

The older trains have two single row aisles upstairs with an open space in the middle you can see below. The open space is below a rack that runs the length of the car so yes, this looks very legit. I used to watch episodes of The L Word on my iPod and was always concerned that someone upstairs was looking over my shoulder. At least they didn't take a picture of me and post it on Engadget!

no from the pictures ive spied on other iphone news sites, it appears to be on the right side of the device, if looking at the screen at the correct orientation...
the left side is supposedly the hold butten thing, and in between them is the rumored non existent sim card tray... :D

yeah, i agree. this guy looks a lot like mike matas, a very young lad who co-started delicious library, and after a year on the start-up was hired by apple to design interfaces (OS).
It's the kind of guy who'd be using an iphone as a tester.

Apple's WorldWide Developer Conference is ongoing in San Francisco this week.
There are quite a number of Apple employees making the trip from the South Bay area to San Francisco, presumably some by CalTrain.
The person has a black WWDC07 laptop back next to their right leg, so this looks and smells completely legit.

Was he constantly resetting it and shaking it up and down when it ceased to respond? That's how I'd be persuaded it's real.

My, my, my....... so many Apple haters taking the time to read all Apple articles and then posting their hate as if they can persuade others to hate Apple also. Some appear to have gotten a hold of the tap on the hate-orade keg.
tasterspoon @ Jun 14th 2007 9:37PM
Oh, lighten up. I don't mean to imply any hatred of Apple. Their products are very pretty. I'm looking at a gorgeous $400 paperweight right now.

You gain nothing with sarcasm.

About a month ago, a co-worker of mine at Yahoo spotted a guy with it messing around while on Caltrain to work. When he mentioned it to the guy, he instantly put it away only to few minutes later, pull it out again before handing over the controls so my friend could pilot it for a little while.
I definitely believe what the guy holds in his hand is an iphone. :)

i think you all must be color blind
that "iphone" is white!!!!!!!!
