Verizon Wireless offers online backup protection free of charge.

"myth90045, you're missing the point, it's mostly to sync the calendar. to transfer contacts from one phone to another, we have the sim card for that."

I'd also imagine it's for the instances when a ATT customer would lose their phone or have it stolen, when they get the replacement they just re-download their contacts.
