We recall (vaguely) a time when CDMA phones were notoriously clunky compared to their GSM brethren; they were thick, built like tanks, and frequently sported aerial antennas flying shamelessly beyond the hinge. Well, yeah, those days are long gone. Exhibit A: the Samsung
SCH-r510 "Wafer" candybar, just introduced by Alltel, clocking in at a ridiculous 8.4 millimeters thick. For the record, that's a solid half millimeter thinner than the
A727 being passed around at CES this year, a phone allegedly destined for AT&T that's still nowhere in sight. Besides EV-DO, features include a 1.3 megapixel cam and the soothing knowledge that your carrying the thinnest durned cellphone your Alltel dollars can buy. On the low end, the SCH-u340 "Snap" (known simply as the u340
on Verizon) keeps it simple, offering a monochrome external display and nothing more than 1xRTT to speed those bits along. Look for the Wafer for $70 after rebates and the Snap for $10 -- both on contract, obviously.
[Thanks, Jeff]

What the HELL is it with US carriers STILL putting crap quality cameras into their phones? The new Nokias have 5MP cameras, the SonyEricssons - whilst not having top megapixel count - have awesome quality cameras, and even my HTC Hermes has a (naff) 2MP camera on the back and a VGA cam on the front.
1.3? That's four, five year old technology! Whyyyyyyyy! And it's Samsung, too! WHYYYY!

Because Americans don't want to drop more than $50 to $100 on a phone w/agreement. I do agree with you though, but blame all the Americans want cheap ass phones.

Hmm... It's odd how the markets differ so much. I got my Vario 2 (Hermes) on an 18-month contract for just £65 (about $110 I guess) and I pay £27.50 a month including the £7.50 for unlimited data - which works out at a stonking deal granted, but it's not _that_ amazingly low-priced. My mate got the same handset on the same tariff for just £40 two days ago in the same shop. I had to laugh when I was on the phone to T-Mobile and the guy said "the Americans sell handsets we couldn't give away!" but then I thought, 'blimey, it is true... Why the hell?'
What I can't understand is why the demographic who really want these decent phones doesn't complain more than it does - I can see how all the techies have gone mad for the iPhone, but there's not that big of a fuss over it in the UK from what I can see because we've had phones that can do what it does for a while now (and are a LOT cheaper). The size of the US market makes me think that carriers would try to bring innovation to their customers because they'd get lots of profit from it.
So, where am I going wrong in my thought process?

I sell cell phones, and quite honestly as of now the general American public doesn't care much about camera phone quality, and I would imagine it has a lot to do with how digital camera prices have gone way down and quality has gone way up in the past few years here.
Plus, there seems to be this entitelemt attitude amongst Americans who sign a 2 year agreement... many feel that they are "entitled" a free or dirt cheap phone by their provider for a 2 yr contract.
I look at it more as a "if this is the phone I am gonna have for possibly 2 years I would rather spend the money on a decent one" but sadly the rest of this country does not see it that way. Then they piss and moan when their $20 phone doesn't last them 2 whole years. I wish I could sell cell phones in Europe, lol.

Shrug. I'm on Verizon, so I'm stuck with good reception and lousy phone choices. I look at European GSM phones and salivate. Trade-off, I guess: good phones and good quality aren't in the same realm in the USA. I'd pay for a good CDMA but unfortunately, no such thing exists. I see nokia's e90 and think that'd be perfect...but alas it's GSM.

Does the "Wafer" go "Snap" if you sit on it?

I'm an alltel guy, probably because that's all that services my little missouri town. I totally agree with elgee, most Americans won't fork out the cash, that not to say that some wouldn't, I would. Although it's not like alltel doesn't have some pricey phones, they do... just none of them have decent cameras. I really don't get it. I LOVE Nokia's n-series devices. Especially the n90. But, I have a feeling that nokia wouldn't make a premium CDMA phone if alltel was the last service provider in the U.S. Ideally, cingualr would get their act together and put up some towers in the dark corners of the 'states, and I'd be a happy camper. However, our contract expires this month, and unfortunately I think I've just found my phone for the next two years. all hail the Wafer. or the u520. Can't decide.
