The HTC P4000 for Telus in the flesh

Being the first on the block to have the latest and greatest is an awesome feeling and the HTC P4000 (aka Titan) is no exception. Our favorite CDMA carrier up north, Telus, just landed the latest bad boy today that's sporting Windows Mobile 5.0 with a cost of $200 on a three (ouch!) year contract. Just in case you forgot the spec sheet, we'll give it to you again: EV-DO Rev. A, 2 megapixel cam, 256 MB of RAM, 128 of ROM, and Bluetooth 2.0. Verizon and Sprint customers should be very jealous!

Alrighty - I bought the phone and I love it - but I cannot seem to figure out two things:
1. Can the green flashing light be turned off?
2. How do you load Facebook onto this thing? It keeps saying that I do not have java script??

According to the specs on the Telus web site the screen is a 65K color "touchscreen".

Just FYI - I have been doing some checking and am considering the P4000 as well as the new Diamond; I was looking at Blackberries and even the upcoming Samsung Instinct, but there are some issues with a couple of applications I am looking to make use of, that require Touchscreen capabilities (even a WM non-touch device like the Moto Q won't work). In my research it appears that with the availability of WM 6.1 for the P4000 and the presence of the keyboard not just the touchscreen, the P4000 has some draw. The Diamond is easily the "sexiest" of the 2 devices, but the capabilities appear similar once WM 6.1 is loaded on the P4000. The Diamond has a higher speed processor (600 MHz), but the P4000 uses a duo core design that has a dedicated secondary processor (128 MHz or something like that) for the phone features and then the primary processor at 400 MHz. As a result the P400 may not be as overpowered by the Diamond as it seems initially.

Any input from anyone who has actually done the P4000 upgrade would be appreciated.

I agree stay away from this phone if you can. It was one of the best of its type I use it for music movies, camera, usb internet connection for my laptop and wireless. And it works amazingly well when it works. There in lays the problem, if you have any problems and need it repaired or replaced, they will only replace your phone with a refurnished phone never a new phone so once you have a problem you only get 1 of the phone with a previous problem to fix it (No fix there). My phone worked well for just under a year, then it had to be replaced at least 2 times then the last phone I got had a problem and my warranty expired after 1 month of getting the last replacement phone and now I am stuck with a phone that is unresponsive and needs to be reset and twisted to work.

yeah this phone will be launching on verizons network some time this summer I got to play with on eon verizons network from an HTC rep it is an amazing phone I love the size I also got to play with the 5800 AKA (Libra) on verisons network I cannot believe how small it is also should be arriving in the summer

Love it, Love it, Love it !
I can say I have tried very many CDMA phones, almost all the latest from Telus. I have had and used Samsung SPH I700 (not so good) Audiovox( UTstarcom) PPC 6600 (so so, not too bad, terrible camera). HTC P4000 ROCKS. I love the profile, sound quality, speed and ease of use. the only complaint or comaprison between the previous ones is the DPAD and dialing. I liked how right Dpad would launch the call history and down would open the speed dial in samsung and audiovox. I guess with P4000 and it's extra goodies, I just have to get used to the using menue and or the voice dialing feature. better yet, I'll get Microsoft voice command reinstalled in it and now I would have the best.

Just got the phone a couple of days ago - find it doesnt hold a charge too long - died last night. Thought this may be because left hooked up to wi-fi

Fairly easy to work - can't figure how to put it on speaker yet and cannot find a manual anywhere!!!!

Phone works great -good reception even in tougher places - awesome camera. again lots of features but no manual to find out how to use.

Voice command not as nice as Motorola - as far as I can figure you have to enter each name tag in instead of just saying a name and it asking for which number you want.

Theres my ramble... anyone have any answers

I am looking to get one as well... I downloaded the manual to look at the features. I find that the Telus product comparison table on their website is GROSSLY inaccruate on both the HTC P4000 and the Palm Treo 700wx & 700p. Below is a link to download the manual.

Does anyone have any opinions on how this compares to the Palm Treo (650, 700wx or 700p)?

Does anyone have any more feedback on this product, positive or negative? I will most likely get one tomorrow.

to put on speaker i think you just hold the green phone button for a couple of seconds and it will do it. it also indicates speaker on the screen by a phone icon at the top left area

this unit operates very similar to my ppc6600 (audiovox) but is slower which i attribute to less RAM (ppc6600 was user adjustable on a screen)

I have this Unit, just got it a week ago. I Have only TWO (but SEVERE) complaints...one being the low amount of RAM, 48mb. (not enough to properly handle windows mobile 6). But first of all..this thing is very fast and in all honesty, beats the pants off of anything else Telus or Rogers has out there to offer. The treos can't even compare, the processor in the p4000 is a mini dual core 400mhz. Screw the specs, I tried all the phones in my hand. I'm very picky and I can tell you once I held this thing, I knew I was going to get it. This phone has a wider, crisper/sharper screen, yet is a much smaller unit than ALL the other PDA's. The keyboard is simply unbelievable and the phone simply feels much much more solid and expensive than the other PDA's.
If you actually took an hour to compare all the PDA's like I did, you'll notice it's like comparing a mercedes "HTC P4000" to a bunch of hyundai's and fords (other PDA's).

In the past, I know many people, like I, did the very same...every time I'd buy a new phone, I'd think "aw man, did I make the right choice?" and second guess myself constantly. But even though this being a much more expensive purchase, am still 100% confident in my decision. It's simply that much better. The reception remains constantly strong and VERY clear. If you recently purchased a PDA and can still exchange it, I strongly suggest you try the HTC P4000. That is, if you don't have a problem with these two cons:

One thing that severely pissed me off was how Telus did not have the proper specs for the damn thing. First of all, the ram isn't at 128, nor is it at 64, as I indicated earlier, it's at 48, and this is why this phone did NOT come with the new windows mobile 6. With it's current windows mobile 5 loaded, I only have 20.1mb of ram (out of the 48) to play around with... now that unfortunately SUCKS!! This is definitely the phone's biggest downfall. After building such a great little gadget and having the ability to throw all competition out the door...Why...whhhyyy in all of the sun's energy they couldn't bring it up to at least 64mb is beyond Even my big brain's capability to understand.

The only other con is basically not from the gadget itself. I blame this one on telus. This genius piece of gadgetry came with a gps-ready system... but as usual, telus had to disable at least one function on the phone and the GPS system was it. So, the phone being GPS capable is unable to perform that task thanks to telus.

But other than that, the phone is definitely number 1 in EVERY other aspect, whether it's size, weight, image quality, sound quality, processing speed, looks or ergonomics.

It does have 64mb RAM. 15-16 mb are used by the OS leaving around 48 mb for apps. WM6 has better memory management than WM5, so the amount of RAM has nothing to do with why the device shipped with WM5. RAM eats battery, which is the main reason phones don't have more of it. What have you tried to do that you couldn't because of the amount of RAM?

Right, my bad on the Ram, I read that 16 mb was unmarked and used for the os (just like the ROM)in an article shortly after posting this. But I am absolutely positive that some of the PDA's I went through showed the full 64mb or 128mb in the system settings. And I suppose I wasn't expecting that considering I have an hp hx4705 which shows the actual full size RAM.

As for windows mobile 6, you may be right about it having better management and it does only require a min 32mb or ram to run but it is recommended to have 64.

But hey, I was wrong, this thing does have 64. So there really aren't any complaints about this PDA over others. so....

BUY IT!!!!

I'm very interested to this P4000 gadget. I have several programs I need to install on it. Including the Epocrate medical database, personal database and the Novii remote control program so I will not have to buy an other remote control for my tv, sat and 5.1dvd player. Major problem. The local Telus salesman says the P4000 doesn't have the Infrared. If there is no IR, the remote program won't work. Some people says there is IR and others says there isn't. Any comment anyone? For the ram. I'm affraid I will need a lot. I need to test the thing with my bundle of software before I buy but if everything works correctly, get me on gadget!!!

battery life sucks, ran it with wifi off for 3 hrs, after a good drain/charge prior & the pwr now says 40%? wifi sw shaky, kind a hard to setup with little or no manual otherwise good gadget

I have had this phone for about 3 weeks now (got mind about 2 days after launch) I have found it to be a great device. T0 clear a couple of things up RAM 64mb as reported by the device info hardware screen. Flash memory is 256mb which is fine really when you consider that you will probably only use this for main programs as it has a micro SD slot which I use a 2gb card in for songs and video's. Battery life is good from what I can see. Sure it will not last as long as a phone...IT'S A PDA with a phone in it.. it lasts just as long as my Axim X51v does when I use similar types of services ie wi-fi and bright display settings. I have found that if I charge it each night I have no issue through the day for all my needs. The wifi is easily switched on and off by the side of the phone so it's not a big deal to enable and disable as needed. I must say that if it is true that the GPS functionality of the phone has bee disabled then I have an issue with telus on that one but I have yet to confirm that that functionality exists.

Anyway best phone/PDA I have ever owned and I would highly recommend it. One app I find very useful and telus must hate is Phone dashboard, it keeps track of minutes used in peak, weekend, off-peak and warns when you are close to exceeding contracted minutes.

I love this unit. Camera is a little frail, sensitive and so on. Maybe with bit more knowledge of this 2 mega pixel camera will have use for it.
It seems to freeze more often than desired; can't push it too much. I really like the sync with Outlook, Exel & Word.
The mp3's sound awsome in the headset. I would really like to see a variety of cables: mini usb to RCA or usb to Stereo.

Hey James,

You mention an app called the Phone Dashboard, is this another piece of software? Or is it included in the phone? If another piece of software, where can I get it?

with respect to the phone I just got mine a couple of days ago. So far I am really enjoying it the voice quality is a lot better than I expected and the reception is really good even in bad locations.

The one thing that I hate is when the phone goes into sleep mode and when I go to use it again I have to hit the power button. I would be nice to just tap the screen to start everything.

Overall so far this is an amazing phone and worth getting.

Has anyone been having problems with this device? I am on my third (replaced today). I am having really bad reception sometimes no reception at all and I am in Whitby, only a couple bars in Scarborough. Sometimes the software crashes and the sound quality especially on the first device was crappy. I am still in my 30 day replacement or exchange period so I haven't had any problems exchanging the phones. I want to stick with the phone but if this problems presist I will need to change to a blackberry or treo (something I don't really want to do). Anyone knows why the Pre-append does not work? It doesn't even work on the phone I just got right out of the box for crying out loud.

Design is nice but reliability sucks.

Side Bar - I call HTC yesterday and the claim they have had no problems, some story from Telus yet today when I was in the Telus store this lady came in with her HTC that crashed and won't reboot and the joke was the replacement would be her third!!!

I like this phone - the touch screen works very well, it seems fast and responsive.

I have had problems with the phone's OS crashing - it shows a bright white screen. The only way to recover is to pull the battery and start it back up. This seems to happen about once per day - I have had the phone 4 days so far. I have also once had the contacts program fail - trying to access my contacts shows a blank screen. Powering cycling the device fixed that.

I am not sure if I have a hardware problem or if the software is just flaky.

I will give Telus a chance to fix the issue first before I complain and follow up. I really want to keep this phone, but I need something more stable than the unit I have. When it works, it is a joy to use.

I got this phone 2 weeks ago and I love it.

I wasnt sure about a treo, blackberry or this one.

I am glad I didnt go with a blackberry or treo

I love it and can install lots of apps. I got magic button which help saves memory by really closing the running apps which you then wont have white screen freeze.

I also installed another app to manage my HTC and have a nice interface...

mine froze once or twice before I installed the Magic Button application which is free on the web.
get it, its worth it !!

Great reception, nice voice quality. Nice touch screen, nice everything.. I just love it !!

Thanks for the update Frank. I wish I had seen your post earlier. I started killing programs manually to see if memory was the issue and I have not had a crash since. When I first got the device, I was trying everything on it - once the novelty wore off and I settled in to normal usage, it has worked great.

I will have to look in to Magic Button, but for now, I am happy. The more I use the device, the more I like it.

this phone sucks. I am on my second and am not willing to go to the third. am currenlty fighting with telus, but they say it is the dealers problem. they are hidnig, but i will flush them out...

DO NOT use a third party. go only to a direct telus store or the website, this is what telus call centre told me.

Hello, I just got this phone and I do love it. This is probably a stupid question but how do I use my mp3s as the alarm clock? Also is there a way to pull up only my 'favorite' contacts or some kind of short contact list when I open the contacts application, rather than have it pull up all of them? Thanks.

I was doing some tinkering because i too wanted to know this.
so i found out that you can add an alarm sound by double clicking on your mobile device whiles its connected to your computer , go in to your windows files *DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING OR ALTER ANY FILES* but can simply copy and paste your WAVE file inside , if you look you will notice the same name wave files which are listed in your alarms drop box on your device , i havent tryed MP3 , buts it works with waves , i simply used the windows sounds recorder and copyed an MP3 in to a wave and pasted it there , and it worked like a charm

I currently have the PPC-6700 and was experiencing the same problems with locking up on a blank white screen. The issue is not with the hardware it is a problem with early builds of Windows Mobile 5. Telus was not offering the latest ROM updates so I went looking and found an unofficial update which solved all my problems. The package I used was Kirvin_HTC_APACHE_AKU_3.5_Stock. My 6700 runs far better now. The boot time has decreased significantly too.

I can't say for sure if the above method will work for the p4000 but HTC and Telus have released an official update to Windows Mobile 6 for this device. You can find this upgrade at http://www.telusmobility.com/ab/business_solutions/htc_p4000_upgrade_xp.shtml
