Verizon Wireless raises PDA data / voice bundle prices
Verizon Wireless can be a bit sneaky at times when the word "unlimited" means "limited", so we weren't surprised to see that the CDMA carrier's PDA data and voice bundles saw price increases recently. We guess that if unlimited really means limited, price hikes are soon to follow, yes? For your reading pleasure, Verizon now limits its "unlimited" data services to 1) Internet browsing, 2) email and 3) intranet access (including access to corporate intranets, email, and individual productivity applications like customer relationship management, sales force, and field service automation). On top of that "unlimited" data transfer being capped at 5GB per month, we now have price increases for those Verizon PDA data and voice bundles. Check it: 450 minutes for $79.99 per month, 1,350 minutes for $109.99 and 4,000 minutes for $169.99 (all plans have "unlimited" data and night and weekend minutes). [Thanks, Azam I.]

I believe VZW already had those plans in place? 450 Plan w/ Data = Core $39.99 + $40 "UNL" Data ($5 Savings). 1350 Plan w/ Data = Extra $79.99 + $30 "UNL" Data ($15 Savings) and of course 4000 Plan w/ Data = Max $149.99 + $20 "UNL" Data ($25 Savings). I use to work there and they been there for a min.

ummmm...those prices for the voice and data bundles have been that way for quite some time...they haven't changed anything
MajorXero @ Apr 9th 2007 9:14PM
Uh, the pricing hasn't changed. That's what it's always been for the Core, Extra and Max Choice plans.
Core $79.99=450 minutes for $39.99 + data for $40 (compared to $44.99 for data on a standalone, you save $4.99)
Extra $109.99=1350 minutes for $79.99 + data for $30 (savings of $14.99)
Max $169.99=4000 minutes for $149.99 + data for $20. (savings of $24.99)
The only change is the wording. Do your research before claiming the prices have gone up.
MajorXero @ Apr 9th 2007 9:15PM
Dammit, my math-fu sucks today. What 1. said.
You guys need a preview option.
Janet @ Apr 9th 2007 9:18PM
Yeah. I work here, and the prices have remained the same for those bundles for over a year. Where are you getting your facts?
Owen V @ Apr 9th 2007 9:19PM
does web browsing mean no Orb?
Brian @ Apr 9th 2007 9:26PM
I was almost hoping they were raised, as it might have been in advance of the XV6800 or i760 rollout. Or maybe the Blackberry Pearl.
My contract's up - I need me some PDAs!
Doxey @ Apr 9th 2007 9:52PM
The prices for the plans are staying the same. As are the uses for the "unlimited" data. There is just some confusion because the terms and conditions have said for at least the last couple of years that there is a 5GB cap, and it's limited to "1) Internet browsing, 2) email and 3) intranet access (including access to corporate intranets, email, and individual productivity applications like customer relationship management, sales force, and field service automation)." However, that doesn't apply to if you tether, which is an additional $15 on top of the "unlimited" data plans.
stjohnob @ Apr 9th 2007 9:54PM
Those prices haven't changed. VZW hasn't changed the prices. Those prices are bundled packages for both voice and data plans. It offers the data plan at a discount with a combined voice plan.
LordObento @ Apr 9th 2007 10:13PM
You may want to edit your story or just pull it all together because it is completely wrong about the plan increase and misleading.
miklm @ Apr 9th 2007 10:20PM
Chiming in to agree with all the above posters who stated that these bundles have been in place for quite some time now -- at least a year, almost two now. I signed up under the Core Choice (450) plan in November, 2005 at that rate and upgraded during 2006 to the Extra (1350) plan.
The only change may be a clarification of the "unlimited" data policy with the 5GB cap -- its long been understood that "unlimited" doesn't really mean "unlimited" but its never been defined exactly what the cap was, and you've never been allowed to do anything except the above listed Internet features under their ToS.
Research is so hard...
pdaWAITING @ Apr 9th 2007 10:21PM
yeah janet, when are we going to be able to buy the xv6800!!??
OGHowie @ Apr 9th 2007 10:33PM
Damn, got me all excited about getting out of my agreement.
Treo Cell Phone Fan @ Apr 9th 2007 10:52PM
The data plans at Verizon and Cingular are way too expensive. Sprint has the cheapest data plans amongst all carriers - for $15/month, you can do unlimited web browsing and regular emails. And I don't think there is a cap on how much data you can use.
LordObento @ Apr 9th 2007 10:53PM
If a plan ever did change, those that have a plan already are grandfathered in and your rate would not change. This would not be a reason to get out of your contract. Carriers change text/voice/data plans all the time, but when a fee changes that affects you besides taxes, then you can cancel without ETF.
Mark @ Apr 9th 2007 11:07PM
Hey EngadgetMobile OMG THE CALLING PLANS INCREASED TOO, BECAUSE THEY'RE ALSO THE SAME AS THEY WERE A YEAR AGO. Morons. Pull the story, you guys can't just post everything any random idiot sends you guys.

I love Engadget and the articles posted on here. The people are the same everywhere you go (but the idiots seem to be concentrated in PhoneScoop-GOD I hate their forums!). I'm just completely taken aback by this article and the fact that they did not having anyone spot check it. I hope to see this article gone by morning.
Brian, stick to posting about carriers outside the US. That seems to be all you've written about lately anyway so stick with what you know.
Cody Boring @ Apr 10th 2007 9:44AM
MajorXero, AHHHH THE WORLD IS GOING TO AN END BECAUSE OF ONE BAD POST AHHHH! pleaseeeeeee....idiot
NarfPointZort @ Apr 10th 2007 10:47AM
Oh, come on Brian. I poke a little fun at your article like the other ~15 people who commented on it and you respond by deleting my post, but not your own? At least *my* post was factual. You silly boy!

Someone mentioned over on HoFo that they saw a data increase on testman the plans are listed below, but no one could decide if this was actually meant to be single lines or if this was providing a break for data users on family share plans.
700 Plan Display $114.99 $0.45 per Minute After Allowance Monthly Access/Unlimited Data $69.99/$45.00
1400 Plan Display $129.99 $0.45 per Minute After Allowance $89.99 - Monthly Access
$40.00 - Unlimited Data
2100 Plan Display $144.99 $0.45 per Minute After Allowance Monthly Access: $109.99
Unlimited Data: $35.00
Gregory Pittman @ Apr 10th 2007 12:13PM
In addition to the other comments, I haven't seen any limitation to 5MB on the unlimited plan. In fact, Verizon offers a 10MB for $24.99. So no way are they going to charge $45 for an unlimited data plan that's limited to 5MB.
onlydarksets @ Apr 10th 2007 1:40PM
Gregory Pittman- it's limited to 5 GIGAbytes, not 5 MEGAbytes.
Don't Panic! @ Apr 10th 2007 10:55PM
I pay more than that, I have the $5.00 insurance plan as well, then of course there are the taxes. I agree the prices are high but that they are staying the same is good news.
VZWguy @ Apr 11th 2007 12:04AM
Riles:
I am looking at the testman site right now...the data plans are the same, were the same last week, and more than likely will be the same next week.
your..umm...
"source"
at hofo seems to be either
a. on drugs
2. making it up

NarfPointZort @ Apr 11th 2007 1:06AM
Come on, Brian. Delete everyone's comments and pretend this article never happened! *Rowback! Rowback! Rowback!*
everlastinggenie @ Apr 11th 2007 8:41PM
On verizons testman there was an increase in rates, Engadget just posted the old prices instead of the new prices
