Verizon's finally fessed up to a couple hotly-anticipated handsets that've been kicking around in rumorland for some months now: the
MOTORAZR maxx Ve from Motorola and LG's
VX8700. The maxx Ve is the CDMA rendition of the
V6 maxx for GSM networks, offering a 2 megapixel cam, touch sensitive controls, and a thin, sleek package -- in other words, nothing has changed since
yesterday spec-wise -- and will drain your wallet, purse, or other currency-toting device of $200 after rebates on a two-year agreement when it hits on April 24. Announced alongside the maxx Ve, the VX8700 takes LG's
Shine formula and brings it to the US for the first time, although Verizon has opted not to tag the phone with Shine branding for some reason. Like the maxx Ve, you get a 2 megapixel cam, microSD expansion, but this one's for the high-style types with a champagne-hued brushed metal case. It'll beat the Moto to market, rolling out on April 6 for $180 after rebates with the requisite contract.

Is anyone else surprised they are bringing this out so soon after the VX8600?

I have my NE2, so I want to do a poll to help me decide; which one would you get and why?
thnx

From what I understand, the main differences are that the MAXX has the bigger external display, autofocus and the external music controls. The 8700 will be a little smaller. From my experience, LG phones are generally more compatable with the Verizon network. I'm going with the 8700, provided the speakerphone is better than on the 8600, because I don't care about the music player, and the RAZR thing is a bit played out. Plus I'm liking the screen shots of the 8700 a lot better.

I'm going moto maxx, I've loved my lg 8100, my ne2 is also up soon. Thats what I'm getting the maxx just because of the beefy external screen. I'll probably play with them both prior to a real decision but, the 8700's ext screen is non-existent, sure its sleek looking but i really like my external pic caller id. So thats my vote.

Yes, you can use the vx8700 as a USB Mass Storage Device. It will also include Basic Print and OBEX Bluetooth profiles. OBEX is listed for "user-generated" pictures, videos, and sounds. The 4-way navigation shortcuts are also completely customizable.

Will you be able to view text messages on the front of either of these phones?
like the 8600 does

The LG VX8600 has a useless speakerphone. Even with the master volume up all the way, the LG VX8600's speakerphone can NOT be heard, unless you hold it right next to your ear.
Does anyone know if the LG VX8700 will have a significantly improved speakerphone that can actually be heard and not sound distorted?
elgee02 @ Apr 1st 2007 2:03PM
My 8600's speakerphone works fine, I use it quite a bit. Granted I always use mine when there is little to no background noise present, but that said it's plenty loud enough that I've noticed.

Elgee02, I also checked the Verizon store and the speakerphone on the display was so
low that you could not hear it. The salesrep informed me that while a few LG VX8600's may have an OK speakerphone, most do not. Because the phone is so thin and the speakers so small, the price you pay is very low volume on the speakerphone, low volume on the ringer, and about a one third shorter battery life than a more conventional size phone with a larger battery. That is the information I am hearing. We have to wonder whether the LG VX8700 will have the same problems or whether improvements have been made to the speakerphone and the battery life.

I think you spoke to someone who didn't know what they were talking about. I sell LG's left and right including the 8600 and rarely hear complaints about battery life or speakerphone. Plus during a normal day I use my 8600 quite a bit for calls, texting, and I play some games on it too. I never have a problem going a full day without needing to charge it.
That said, I doubt the 8700 will have any problems with speakerphone or battery life, but lucky for you Verizon Wireless extended their return period to 30 days so that should give you plenty of time find out for yourself should you ever get one.

First of all, I don't know why people insist that their experience is the way it is for everyone and anyone who disagrees must be an incompetent moron. That said, look at the reviews for the 8600 on Phonescoop (probably the best resource for user reviews), and overwhelmingly the poor speakerphone is the biggest complaint. Nothing else is even close. I give a lot more credence to that than to one LG sales guy who might have a little bias.

So you think the VX8700 will have a better camera than the Maxx Ve? I can give two very powerful and verifiable reasons why you're wrong.
1. Autofocus.
2. NVidia GoForce 4800

Vastly superior image processing will result in better pictures

My first phone was an LG. My second was Motorola. My wife has a Krzr. Both Motorola's had terrible cameras compared to my LG. Since all I want is a nice phone, decent camera and internet, I will probably go for the 8700. But I might wait to see what the reviews of each say.
I read a while ago the 8700 can be used as a USB drive. Is that still true? It is a real pain getting your own ringtones on the Motorola phones. I hope LG is still better.
