Cingular's Treo 750, Blackjack and 8525 get WM6 treatment

We had a chance to peep an "eyes-only" presentation from AT&T with the dirty details on WM6 for current and future devices, with the newly-branded Cingular apparently poised to introduce patches for three of its hottest handsets. The word is that the Treo 750, 8525, and the Blackjack will see downloadable updates released for current owners, and that WM6 will be pre-installed on all devices launched in 2007. In a separate tip, our peeps tell us that the Blackjack update should be in Cingular's hot hands by May 26; with an expected eight week soak period for testing, this could hit by late July this year. We suppose that if the ROMs prove bulletproof, the cheering masses could theoretically get this update sooner, but until then we can only sit and wait. No word on timing for the other two devices, but we are seriously hoping that Blue has its ducks in a row and that they are on an similar schedule.

HOTTT DAYUM!!!! I'm already sportin a WM6 Rom. But...it is still nice for those who don't want to take the risk of cooked roms.
Thanks Cingular. I'll still purchase a new WM6 Device from ya...as a thank you.

Good for AT&T and a purported eight week testing time. I think this beats Verizon's testing time pretty handily, which seems like about 6 months.
ShortFuse @ Mar 26th 2007 4:57PM
YAY! I was holding off on getting the 8525 thinking I wanted a WM6 phone, but this is good news. By the way, doesn't anybody know if WM6 has a media player that can run 320x240@30fps with an Mpeg-4 codec (h264,xvid, or divx)?
John @ Mar 27th 2007 12:22AM
You really just called AT&T "Blue?" Ever heard of a company called IBM?
ATTChris @ Sep 4th 2007 2:13PM
He called AT&T 'blue' because in the world of AT&T Mobility, 'Blue' is the term for anything branded or having to do with AT&T, and 'Orange' is the term for anything branded or having to do with Cingular. Technically, IBM is known as 'Big Blue'.

I already have WM6 running on my 8525, as do many others, and it is definitely much better than the last WM5 version that was on the phone. Wait if you want to but this upgrade is worth doing NOW. The aren't really any huge changes, just a whole bunch of little ones, which combine to make a significant improvement in the user experience.

Jason,
I have a 8525 and it crashes sometimes and I have to remove the battery to turn it on. A friend of mine told me that WM6 might help this problem, but I'm not sure where to get it, could you point me the link?
Thanks
miguel enriquez @ Sep 11th 2007 2:11AM
how the you get the upgraded version of wm6?
Brad @ Mar 27th 2007 7:14PM
Awesome! I can't wait to get the upgrade... I was on a pretty awesome (corporate) deal with AT&T, then switched with it to Cingular (orange), now back to AT&T. The BlackJack was perfect for my particular needs, in a form factor I liked, w/ a tactile keyboard, etc. A few annoying "features," more particular to WM5 than the phone... can't wait to try WM6!!! Way to go Blue!

While this is great news and I look forward to upgrading my Blackjack, the stated time frames appear to be very slow and hopefully will turn out to be overly cautious. In deed, Samsung, other manufs., and Microsoft want this out ASAP and prior to the iPhone. Mobile 6 was shipped to manufs in late November and while a final version might not be certified until late May, RC versions are being tested well before that. Provided there are very minor changes required from the final version vs. the versions out there between now and late May, the 8 week testing period may turn out to be shorter. I really hope so. Microsoft, the Manufs. and AT&T need to realize that many people have been hearing about Mobile 6 since last Fall and esp. since announced in December, and having the overall process take until late July or August is really demonstrating a problem in software deployement. THis is not an all new OS, it should be given prority, finished and released by AT&T within the next 60 days for goodness sakes! And AT&T as well as Samsung should issue a Press Release confirming all this news, and stating they are going to take only that amount of time necessary to get it right, but they will get it out ASAP. They need to win over their customers with this news, and right now their silence is very odd, are they not sure they want to do what Microsoft is saying they will do? Come on AT&T PR, step up to the plate and hit a home run, now (or at least sooner than later)!

I sent an email to Cingular regarding the upgrade for my 8525 and they told me that ONLY the Treo 750 will receive the upgrade ... for now!
Deric @ Apr 20th 2007 8:54PM
After the AT&T Wireless/Cingular Merger, everyone referred to the AWS side of the house as "blue" the Cingular side of the house was referred to "orange". Besides, IBM is "Big Blue".

Shortfuse: I run 320 x 240 video on my 8525 using TCPMP, which is a free, open source video player that rules.
