The Motorola LAZR?
If you still have RAZRs on the brain after laying eyes on this puppy, we might recommend you get that noodle checked. At a time when Moto perhaps needs a hit more than ever, this shiny piece of gorgeous -- allegedly the "LAZR" -- appears poised to come in and save the day. Features of the chromed-out clamshell are said to include a half gig of internal storage with no expansion slot, Linux (a trend we'll see more and more in Moto's new models), some manner of text-to-speech system for emails and SMSes, and a frickin' two inch external display. No word on a release at this point, but we've got our fingers crossed that it'll bow all official-like at CTIA next week.[Via Howard Forums, thanks Ishay P.]

I believe this is the Motorola V9 (and V9m on CDMA), which will replace the RAZR maxx. In other words, it's a ways off.

And just as a follow-up, no, the Verizon version will still be stuck with Verizon's horrible UI... even though Linux is running on the device, Verizon insists all their phones look as ugly as possible.
elgee02 @ Mar 24th 2007 7:25PM
Lol of course, we can't have one of these posts without some ignorant comment about the VZW UI.
It's extremely easy to use, and nearly all come with different flash layouts so you dont have to see the red bars all the time. If you seriously think the UI is difficult then you are a moron.
RxistKJ @ Mar 24th 2007 7:35PM
Why does the source indicate Howard Forums when it should indicate BengalBoy.com as the watermark on the picture clearly indicates?
Asten @ Mar 24th 2007 7:57PM
@elgee02: It's not hard, it's hideous. It's dumbed down to a 3 year old's level and non-customizable.
george george @ Mar 24th 2007 7:57PM
how do you not give credit to the guy that took the pic? can you imagine what he spent in order to buy the phone, then he shares it with everyone and you snub him? you are quite the blogger
tnkgrl @ Mar 24th 2007 8:21PM
Hmmm... very soon external displays will mach internal displays in size on clamshell phones!
Then I'll be able to ask "what's the point of clamsheel phones again?" with renewed confidence to anyone who keeps telling me that clamshell phones are better because the internal screen is protected from everyday use :)
ShortFuse @ Mar 24th 2007 8:37PM
yeah, i don't see the point in having a huge external display. the a1200 (ming) just has a clear cover so it acts as the outer screen when closed, and the screen itself is pretty big. it pretty much brings down costs in having a second screen.
they should really push that phone but motorola doesn't. stupid. i have one. it has EDGE (new firmware), runs linux, 320x240 displays, can take 2gb microSD (which mine does) and i have zmplayer installed (which is just mplayer recompiled to run on the phone, which allows mkv, avi, ogm files at 320x240@30fps). they made a Ming2 with 3G, Wifi and runs Windows Mobile 6 Professional, it would be PERFECT, but no... just stupid razr type phones. motorola has the potential, like the e680i but wastes it all on cheap razr clones.
i think it was spin magazine, but on their list of top 5 hottest gadgets, #1 was iphone, #3 was motorola ming.
Luis Martinez @ Mar 24th 2007 9:55PM
What no flash are we going back now? Looks like a cross between the LG chocolate flip and a KRZR.
george george @ Mar 24th 2007 9:56PM
i fell in love with the ming after i saw it at ctia last year and bought one the next day. the form is awesome, but once you sync it with your calendar and tasks and contacts the device sucks. swithing days in the calendar app was absolutely brutal. way too slow. entering text and sending messages was the same. too bad as it is a gorgeous device, and if you only plan on using it as a cell phone and a media player it is actually pretty good, but if you need to use pim features it is the wrong device
Mark @ Mar 24th 2007 10:33PM
@3 Look up the definition of ignorant. You seem to be ignorant of the definition of ignorant, lol...
elgee02 @ Mar 24th 2007 10:42PM
Mark, just because you don't agree with what is ignorant doesn't mean I do not know it's definition.
Also, why don't you back your statement up rather than attack my vocabulary.
Asten, it's "dumbed down" huh? So I take it a UI should NOT be very easy to use and figure out? And actually all the VZW UIs do have some degree of custimization.
Anthony @ Mar 24th 2007 11:15PM
Forget the phone- why are the switchblade & lighter in the background (lying on top of some sort of alligator skin)? I find that odd, to say the least.
Is Moto going for the "Guns 'n' Ammo" crowd or is it "Soldier of Fortune? I can't decide.
Mark @ Mar 24th 2007 11:32PM
Ignorant is the lacking in knowledge on a particular subject. How is Christopher Price's opinion on the ugly Verizon UI ignorant? He wasn't saying the UI was was difficult to use, just that it's ugly.
Donald @ Mar 25th 2007 12:37AM
Maybe this phone will last longer than a day and a half on battery - my roommate's sick of yelling "IMMA CHARGIN MAH RAZR" all the time
Luis @ Mar 25th 2007 12:38AM
VZW's GUI is actually good if you work for tech support for VZW. It helps people switching phone brands for ex Samsung to LG. You won't have to relearn the menus and what not. Of course I'm not that lazy so I prefer the stock manufacture OSes :)
RxistKJ @ Mar 25th 2007 6:38AM
@Anthony:
The background of the picture or the "Guns and Ammo" theme you are questioning has nothing to do with Motorola but rather is the flavor of Bengal Boy. Had EngadgetMobile properly referenced his URL, as opposed to being a cowardly blog, you would have clearly known the true source. Since they won't do it, I will: check out www.bengalboy.com if you have a chance...
keiri @ Mar 25th 2007 10:51AM
@15: your roommate spend much time on 4chan? :D
Overall I'm really liking what I see of this phone IF it has more than 512MB internal memory. Otherwise it'll be my business phone.

Anyway we can have that via link point to the original source of the info instead of the people who pulled it from my site?
RxistKJ @ Mar 25th 2007 2:45PM
@Kyle,
Yes, the picture was first posted on your site by Mark Morrows, aka Bengal Boy, who writes:
"Yours is the very first website to see her. I have not even posted her on my own website although you will have to go there to see more about her in the future."
Nice site by the way!

Wow...Anybody take a look at BengalBoy.Com. I never thought that Porn and Cellphones could be shoved together so garishly like that. I mean I'm all for the good looking women, but does it seem forced to anyone else? I doubt some of those girls even know what 3G is, much less how to use it. I mean come on, you think they're up on the HDSPA specs of some of those smart phones they're showing off with those uber-sexy bodies covered in oil? I submit that they do not! :-D

Bengalboy.com is sweet. Pron and tech go very well together as some of us already know.
btsguy28 @ Mar 26th 2007 5:09AM
FYI - The huge external display is touch sensitive.
s @ Mar 26th 2007 7:02PM
do you think dr. evil will have one?
"get me my fricken' lazr you idiot!!"
Ethan @ Mar 27th 2007 3:43AM
I wonder if the LAZR or RAZR 2 sports the same 2" on the inside screen using dual-sided LCD. It would be cool, but that technology is probably not cost-effective right now, if it's even available to manufacturers yet (sorry, I feel like being an ass and not researching).
Coolie201 @ May 25th 2007 5:27PM
So with all these bells and whistles, is it worth the $500 than some people are suggesting? I wouldn't want to pay more than $150 for it with contract. You could buy a laptop these days for that much money!!! Also, any detailed review yet for it? I know Motorola is notorious for releasing half baked software with their phones, so the idea of a new OS scares me
