Hands-on with Samsung's slick, sliding glory, the F700
More Ultra Smart love was on parade for us today and it came in the form of the glorious SGH-F700 from Samsung. Many things immediately stand out when playing with this device -- but first and foremost, it's a stunner. The rear of the phone is made with a glossy material that is reflective, like plastic chrome (think Sony Ericsson Z610i, then scale up the beauty) that really bumps this already classy device up a few notches. The F700 is a tri-band device with 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz GSM, EDGE, and HSDPA. It is definitely worth noting that the F700's HSDPA is the 7.2Mbps variety; no word on 3G frequencies, but we are all praying for some North American salvation. The screen is huge, taking up 2.78 inches of the touchscreen face (yes, it has that too), which is almost all of the front surface. The 440X220 resolution is ideal for mini-widescreening your favorite flicks using the native support for MPEG4, H.263, H.264, and real video. A quick slide and the bottom half hops out to reveal a pretty tight, but ultimately useful keyboard. WLAN? If so, this would be perfect. I wanted a sexier version of the n95 with touch screen, so this takes the cake!

The simplicity of the keyboard really does it for me. Could actually be enjoyable to type on, a stark contrast to any Blackberry, Treo, or just about anything else. HTC brought the sliding keybaord to the mainstream and it looks like Sammy has perfected it.

A perfect example of a tier 1 company crushing the best that a tier 2 company has to offer. HTC assembles components from other manufacturers. Samsung makes all those components and can customize however they want.
HTC has their work cut out for them. Welcome to a 5% margin.

The official press pictures for the F700 show the "space bar" key on the very lower -right side of the keyboard, while some recent videos show where it should be, on the bottom of the keyboard in the middle. Where should it be? Most likely on the bottom-middle, but I'\m hoping Samsung fixed this tiny glitch between dreaming up and photographing the device, and actually building it.

iPhone rip off! It has nearly the same thickness of the chrome part. The shape is identical. The speaker is almost the same, same location. There is a similar button down there, at the same location, though they made the device a bit longer and added the SAMSUNG writing. Then they didn't make it shiny black but added pinstripes, also it became a keyboard. Other than that, totally a rip off.
When I look at how people consider anything that looks even remotely similar to an Apple product as a rip off I really don't understand how people don't see it in this case.

I don't care if it's an iPhone ripoff. I'm really happy that samsung is doing similar design and I hope that other copmanies are going to do the same because the look of cell phones do need an update and apple inspired that.
This has to be my favorite phone (conceptual or otherwise) and I really hope it will be released in the US!
