The thing is you're also getting an ipod (which people are willing to pay 2-3 hundred for, as well as its pda like features (and those phones people also pay handsomely for). People see the $500 price tag and thing about the free featureless phones and start to complain that apple wants to rip people off for their products, but they forget what they are getting is a lot more than just a shitty plastic phone...

Sid

Comments on CE-Oh no he didn't! He said people would be willing to pay the tag on the iphone because they'd feel there is a value in it. That's a valid statement. People who pay the price would feel that it's warranted: standard phone with not so standard features, included headset, new interface, etc.

Free phones don't really have any value, it's not that they're worthless, it's just that they're easy to peddle off with your contract. Many people just want the phone so they can use it. I, for one, don't need 3g, or anything else other than basic calling, bluetooth, and texting features. It's nice to have the rest, but I know that I wouldn't personally use it, so I'll take my "free" phone. I also don't really have a problem with a contract, considering I planned on having the phone for at least the duration of said contract, so I'm alright with it.

The price will come down. Just not for another generation or so. Hardly a comparison, but think about the sidekick and where it stood in line with phones at its debut. Now think of the cost. Think of what you can get one for now with contract. Just sit tight.

meh.

Comments on CE-Oh no he didn't! What Cook said wasn't exactly worded right, but I think a lot of people are using it as anti-Apple propaganda (I got my propaganda, I got revisionism...). Which is just silly, but people are constantly searching for things to piss and moan about against Apple, just like anti-Microsoft people constantly complaining about Windows. Where's the freaking middle ground these days, because I feel like I'm all alone here?

Cook was speaking from HIS perspective, I believe. To Apple-folk, a free phone IS a worthless phone. Apple sort of stands for a minimalist approach to over-the-top bells and whistles. A free phone is just as worthless to me as it is to them; I have no use for any of Sprint's free phones. Free phones can't do most of the things I like my mobile devices to do. In fact, they pretty much just make and receive calls, which isn't high on my priority list and I'm going to bet it's not too high on Apple's either (a la Samsung, perhaps?). It's more like one of those nuissances you have to include so you can still call it a phone. In case you haven't noticed, when phones are marketed, the fact that it can make and receive calls isn't something that's put on the feature list.

I also hardly think anyone's forgetting that the iPhone is more than a phone. If people are thinking that way, they should tie their tubes or get a vasectomy and call it a day.

I'd also venture to say that if you're an Engadget Mobile reader, the majority of you view a carrier's "free phone" selection as worthless, too. Maybe Cook was too hasty in saying that publicly, because God forbid he offend the people who wouldn't even consider buying the iPhone anyway, but when you think of it in terms of perspective I don't see a thing wrong with what he said. We aren't your average mobile phone user, and the iPhone isn't targeted toward the average mobile phone user.

I'm not promoting the iPhone. I think it's going to be a total waste of money and I wouldn't pay $100 for it if it was that cheap. I love my MacBook, but I'm not one of those fanatics that has to have everything-Apple. In fact, I'd really love to ditch my iPod (heh, that was free!) for a Zune.

Cheers, from the baren middleground.

laursifer

Comments on CE-Oh no he didn't! Here are a few facts: you cannot gain a post paid account with Cingular without signing at least a one-year contract, and even that is difficult to do, more than likely with Cingular you will be signing a 2 year contract. To use the services that the iPhone offers will require a voice plan and an unlimited data plan + messaging, for a total monthly bill of ~$85 - $100 per month! For a two year contract this represents a $2000 - $2400 commitment. And even if you didn't accept a subsidized handset, you still are on the hook for a $175 ETF! So, you represent an LTV to Cingular of $2000 - $4000 (depending on how long youy stay with them) and some people think that expecting a subsidy in return for your contractual commitment is wrong???? That is idiotic!

Let me explain something here, Apple is trying to make money not once, not twice, but three times from this sale. They will make margin on the equipment when they sell it to you for $500. Then they will make a $300 commission from Cingular for selling an activation contract, and finally they will make money from content purchases. I salute them for their ingenuity, but this is highway robbery wrapped in the guise of user experience.

Harrison

Comments on CE-Oh no he didn't!
