It seems most of the major carriers have special phones. For awhile the RAZOR was exclusive to AT&T/Cingular and now everyone has them. Verizon has the enV and even the 'chocolate'. With Texting being so popular with the younger generation I think the enV is the most versitile phone as of yet and I'm sure Verizon is making a killing on data/text charges with that phone.

In looking at the iPhone I don't see it as a super popular phone with that many young people. I think there are better phones for this and with the price-tag on the phone it will be out of reach for many people (depending on how much Cingular/ATT will subsidize the phone itself when it hits the market). Cingular/ATT released several phones for MP3s like the ROCKR and I think those are 'decent sellers' but with the price tags those had I believe the RAZOR is still the best selling phone.

The price tag will attract the younger crowd for the iTunes part but it seems this phone will be more for middle-age adults with the nice features it has.

Most of the Wireless carriers want you to pay pay and pay more each month. Nickle and Dime for everything. They make a lot of money with ringtones and data transfers, whether they be SMS messages or even video messages. With the new iPhone it seems that Apple is bypassing some of the 'network' where you can use your phone wirelessly on a WiFi network and not be stuck, as all the other phones are, to using the carrier's data network. I don't know how much one can do on the WiFi as compared to using it through the carrier's Data Network(GSM/EDGE).

All in all ... Most Carriers don't make too much money on the phones. That is just the hard cold facts. They would rather lure you into a contract and subsidize the price of the phone as the customer signs a 2 year contract and will start using the 'extras' on the phone (email, texting, web-surfing, taking/sending pics to one another...etc). That is where they make their money. It isn't on the normal Voice contract, nor on the phone itself. They make most of their money on the 'extras'. So I guess the bottom line is that Cingular will lure people to open a contract or 'add a line' with this new phone but they will certainly have to subsidize the phone's price if they really want to attract new customers.

Jeff F
