Are you also using push email with the Blackjack?  I'm running push email and when I leave 3G on I get about 14 hours with the usage you described.  I shut off 3G and get about 30 hours.  If I wasn't using push email I'd expect 40-48.  Dial *#1546792*# then option 3, then 5, select GSM.
