From the "They still make those?" dept.: Motorola's M710
Yeah, we knew Motorola was still committed to making old-school car phones -- heck, Telus carries one of 'em -- but we still can't help but chuckle a little when we catch wind of a new one in the pipeline. The latest, dubbed M710, rides on Motorola's own iDEN, suggesting that it might find its way to Nextel at some point (or not; after all, Telus operates an iDEN network north of the border, as do a good number of carriers across the world). Given the M710's supposed lease in life as a commercial device, iDEN seems like the perfect fit considering that corporate customers account for an overwhelming majority of their base, but we're still somehow having a difficult time picturing anyone taking this over an i880.

It looks like the tail end of a logitech harmony remote

Sure the mass market wants small, sleek phones, but there are a LOT of older people out there who want a larger ("more solid") phone with big buttons...

Apparently, they also still make these kind of phones for people who live in areas with little or no service. Because they have a more powerful antenna they can get better signal from the tower.

This is also a much cheaper alternative for people who have fleets of service than those dedicated satellite like the ones from QUALCOMM. My company is looking at this from where we can have an in car unit with gps tracking and push to talk and even a fax interface. I hope Nextel carries it.

I think you guys know that this is a CAR PHONE. As in a hard wired to a car with a little antennae sticking out of your rear window? Remember how things used to be before 1995?
I can see plenty of reasons for a phone number to be tied to a car, and not a person.
