Best Buy Mobile opens up shop in New York
While Best Buy's been selling mobiles (and holding out on Wii hopefuls) for some time now, the big blue retailer is diverting a bit more fundage towards the cause. Aside from continuing to offer phones and plans in typical stores, Best Buy is opening up a smattering of New York-based Mobile stores to handle your cellular needs (and probably hassle you for an extended warranty as well). While details about the store layout and initial offerings are a bit scant at this point, we do know that nine locales will be opening up in the Big Apple alone, with a red (as in, not black) PRODUCT (RED) RAZR being their "exclusive" offering. The stores will partner with Verizon Wireless, Amp'd Mobile, Sprint-Nextel, and Cingular, and should have a plethora of promotional goodies surrounding each and every door to snag your attention.

I know that there is a store on Madison and about 44th that's been open for at least a month. It looks like they took the in-store mobile shop and just moved it to a stand-alone store. Better layout of course, and I hope they use dedicated associates who can actually answer questions properly.

Did you also know that these new stores are part of a new partnership between Carphone Warehouse in the UK and Best Buy. You can see some details about the deal here: http://www.cpwplc.com/cpw/ir/lse/rnsitem?id=1159291554nRNSZ5260J

I was just at the Best Buy on Broadway by Houston and the Mobile Station is nice, but nothing special. It's just like they moved their kiosks from upstairs to downstairs where the DVDs used to be.
The two people there were nice, but one knew his stuff and the other didn't. The selection was lacking as well.
Best,
C

There's a Best Buy mobile across the street from Curcuit City at Union Square for those of you in NYC

At any store, you're likely to find some associates that don't necessarily know what they're doing. Also, looking at it objectively, when a company starts up a new venture in a different vein, there is always going to be a period of uncertainty.
I've been to a Best Buy mobile, and the dude there actually turned me on to this site as a place to learn more. I know next to nothing about cell technology, but it does seem to be a smart business move to cater to customers like me. And thats what it looked to me that they were doing. Better service than I've ever had at a cell shop.

Has anyone ever purchased an extended warranty on a cell phone from Best Buy? I don't always buy the extended warranty but I am usually glad I did the few times I have (my Xbox for one). I bought the warranty on a Motorola e815 and when I took it back in they said that for the first year of the warranty I had to go through the manufacturer, which is Verizon, for the first year, and then the second year I went through them. I got my $80 back.

Unimpressed with the store on the Upper West. At the regular BB stores, the associates claimed that the mobile stores would offer more phone choices. Turned out to be false. Not only that, but the phones that were on display were all plastic fakes so you couldn't see the display resolutions, feel the actual weight of the phone, experience the phone's performance, yadda yadda...

I just visited one of their new stores on 3rd Ave and it looked great and the employees were very helpful.
