Palm delays US Treo 750 into oblivion
Clamoring to get your hands on a Treo 750 here in the States? Does the very thought of a HSDPA, stub antenna-free, Windows Mobile-equipped slice of Palm goodness leave you dizzy with desire? Well, get ready to wait. And wait. And, oh yeah, then wait a little more -- just until you get to the point where the by-then-dated phone is a distant memory in your mind and you couldn't possibly care less about its release (much to Palm's chagrin, undoubtedly). Despite repeated rumblings about the Treo 750's imminent release on Cingular, Palm has dropped the bomb today that the 750 is now targeted for a US debut in the third frickin' quarter of 2007 in a report detailing its revised guidance for Q2 of next year. The slip is allegedly due to a "delay in certification," suggesting that the FCC might be responsible for gumming up the works here -- but any way you slice it, this doesn't bode well for folks looking to get their high-end Palm on who don't have the benefit of Vodafone coverage. Maybe we can occupy ourselves with the 680 in the meantime?[Via PDA247]
Update: False alarm! Apparently these newfangled "fiscal years," as they're known, are way ahead of the calendar we normally know and love. Turns out the third quarter of fiscal '07 starts next month, so we might see some 750 action before the year's out after all. [Thanks, Dayton]

No I do not want to get a Treo 680. I wanted a Treo 750!! I guess the 8525 will be my choice!!!

So, does this mean the Palm 750 I ordered from Amazon (thanks, Boy Genius - http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2006/11/24/palm-750-available-for-sale-on-amazoncom/)
and is listed as "arriving after December 25th" is going to be really late for Christmas?

Why does anyone care about Palm anymore? I mean, there are seriously better options out there: Nokia's E series, T-Mobile Dash, 8525, even the BlackJack looks like a better option (especially because it exists).
Plus I thought the FCC had already approved it:

I don't know why people find the difference between financial years and calendar years so confusing, as we've all been dealing with it since we were little kids. The academic school year begins in the fall, not in January, yet no one complains about that.

To Anthony (post 7) and all you palm haters - Palm is loved not because of the Palm OS or because of their particular brew of chunky ugliness, but rather because they create interfaces which make the information on your device imminently more accessible. I picked up a Blackjack last week, hoping to replace my Treo 650 with a slicker and more lightweight alternative, and boy was I dissapointed. It doesn't matter how thin or sexy the package - if you can't use the device to interact with the information you need, then it's all a waste. The WinMo Treos are, like their Palm OS siblings, quite simply the most accessible and intuitive PDA/phone combos out their.
Sure the Treos could have wi-fi, or weigh 2 oz., or only be 1 mm thick, but get real. Wi-fi equipped phones are exceedingly rare in the U.S. market, and the thin and light windows smartphone edition phones really do suck compared to the user-friendly Treos, etc. Nokia E92, 8525, Dash - all great options. But there is a time and a place for everything - and that most certainly includes the Palm offerings as well.

I placed the order at about 10:20 EST on the 25th - my zip code (Alexandria, VA) was working then. I got the standard confirmation email from Amazon, and a second verifying that my Cingular account was authorized to upgrade. Now it shows this for the status:

Well, I have the Dash and I love it. I get all my info, pim info, push email from my exchange server, watch movies, read my bible, listen to music, surf the web (via wifi), it's my alarm clock, electronic wallet, dictionary, reads my documents, slideshows my pics, and is sometimes my flashlight (in the night when I have to go pee). Come on, what more could I want?
Adrian @ Nov 28th 2006 2:31PM
@ crispeto
Did we really have to know the ways that you use your smartphone other than for what it was meant?
Chopsticks @ Nov 28th 2006 6:36PM
Who cares if the Treo 750 is not thin like other phones, I like a little junk in the trunk like my women :)
Shaun @ Nov 28th 2006 9:25PM
This is absolutely ridiculous!!!! I was talking to these Palm Reps who were recruiting at my school (UofM engineering) back in September and they had 750's running on cingular with cingular logo's on them. Of course the logo's were taped up, but you could tell it wasn't vodafones. They were programmers for palm and denied they had ever heard about the rumored 680, sure. All I'm saying is what the crap Palm???? Stop lying, the 750 has been around for more than 6 months and you haven’t worked out your issues? But, you apparently still had time to put together the 680 and release it? And keep laughing at Apple like they’re not in the same league. All I have to say to Palm is that this nonsense aint gonna fly in 2007.
jacob @ Nov 30th 2006 5:43PM
This was a mis-quote. It was intended to be Palm's third quarter. Their fiscal third quarter starts in December 2006! Cingular should see this device in late December but may be January.

"1 of: MEdia Max 1000 (1000 Messages: Text, Picture & IM; Unlimited Video & Internet Access)"
This is not recommended for the Treo 750. Not only are you paying for internet twice, but if you have an issue with your internet, the first thing they are going to tell you is "You need to remove your Media Max 1000 because it is not compatible with PDA devices."
Look to replace that $29.99 Media Max package with Messaging Extreme for $19.99 and get 3000 messages. Saves you $10/month, get an extra 2000 SMS/MMS msgs, and both are compatible with the device.
