Samsung m610 now available from Sprint
We first spotted Samsung's slim m610 clamshell way back in August, but it looks like the phone's now finally available for purchase from Sprint, apparently still able to claim the title of "thinnest clamshell wireless phone in the United States." Apart from a new black paint job, the phone's specs remain the same as before, with a 2.0 megapixel camera, QVGA internal display, OLED external display, Bluetooth, and a microSD slot for expansion (a 64MB card is included); it'll also let you take advantage of Sprint TV and other Sprint PCS Power Vision multimedia services. Measurements come in at 3.98 x 2.05 x 0.47-inches with the phone weighing in at a mere 3.28 ounces. Getting it no strings attached will run you $329.99, but if you're willing to go through the usual contract signings and instant rebates, Sprint will let you have one for just $180.

Looks so much better dressed all in black.
I wonder if the keypad is similar to the D830.
Alex @ Nov 24th 2006 3:31PM
Seems to be too simple and homely. Is it really the thinnest one?
frank @ Nov 24th 2006 4:09PM
I never thought I'd get used to a flat keypad but I've been using the PEBL for about a year now and I can text like a maniac. But these pics make it look *totally* flat, which I could see being a problem.

So this phone is mighty nice. It is so very thin, the screen is amazing, and the camera takes nice shots. I have been playing with this one for about a month now (raw metal edition, pre-black) and really like it. As for the keypad it is a blessing and a curse...in terms of a sealed keypad it is easy to clean but in terms of tactile feedback there is none. This phone is 100% eyes on the keys to do anything, there are two little nubs on the "5" key but that does nothing for the overall keypad navigated sight unseen. The phone is also pretty darn long, when watching a smaller person talk on it...there is a strange feeling that it is a shoe phone...but dam is it thin.
Yup or Nope? @ Nov 25th 2006 4:13PM
I'm stuck between the Krzr K1m and this new m610. I'd like a big internal screen, so i'm leaning towards the m610 (aka Machete), but i'm also big on looks, a definite advantage going to the krzr. If it came down to those two categories, it'd prolly be m610, but...i'm just not sure. Any suggestions?
shaniac @ Nov 25th 2006 4:34PM
The KRZR is nice, but the hinge seems a bit loose, the outside is always covered in fingerprints and it just doesn't feel that great build wise. The 610 seems much more solid...but it is not completely the looker that the KRZR is.

Shaniac - This may sound like a REALLY dumb question, but, does that tiny little external display show caller ID info for incoming calls or is it limited to just dislaying the time?
shaniac @ Nov 26th 2006 9:28PM
Katherine - The M610 can show all types of messages. From Caller ID, to VM, SMS, etc. It really is one color, and no pictures from what I have seen. But it is pretty nice for an external display...not flashy but it also won't eat your battery since it is OLED.
Katherine Hopkins @ Nov 26th 2006 9:56PM
Thanks for the quick reply! I don't really care that it doesn't show pictures, and I think the blue looks quite nice, actually. As long as it displays caller ID info on the external display, that's all I care about. The relatively small size of the display was what had me wondering if it did. I'd hate to get one only to find out I have to flip it open every time to see who's calling. That alone would be a deal-killer, no matter how great the rest of the phone is!
Yup or Nope? @ Dec 15th 2006 8:01PM
I have the m610 and i think its great. The only thing is it didn't come with a usb cable and my computer doesnt have bluetooth. is there any way to get some of the music on my computer onto my phone?
Mark @ Jan 4th 2007 2:48PM
I am considering the M610 but have been told the volume does not work well. I sometimes have trouble hearing in noisy areas. Would this be a problem with this phone?
Aaron @ Jan 1st 2007 10:17PM
I've had the phone for a week. Have been sufficiently satisfied with my Sanyo clamshell, but curious about all the new-fangled thin phones. Some thoughts:
While the phone is incredibly thin, I've had major issues being able to hear it ring with just a little bit of crowd noise, even at the highest setting. (Sanyo's are definitely louder.)
The speakerphone level is also a bit suboptimal (I suppose that's what bluetooth is for, although I still think people look kinda silly with those things)
It is cool to hold and look at--though the external display does seem a bit step-backwards digital, given the wowness of the inside display. Everything else with the phone is fine (battery life/UI). They did put the microSD in a weird place--you have to take the battery out to access it.
I'm waiting to see next week what the new Apple phone will look like before I decide whether or not to keep it.
andrew clayton @ Jan 14th 2007 4:13AM
has anyone been able to get the phone to stop guessing what word you are going to type next on t9? it is so incredibly annoying, yet no one else has complained about it in any forum i have seen!

nice and thin. Having the camera for those candid moments is a huge bonus as well as the bluetooth.
