Palm's Ed Colligan laughs off iPhone
"We've learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone," Ed Colligan apparently laughed about with John Markoff last Thursday morning. "PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They're not going to just walk in." Ed, baby, sweetheart, a couple quick reminders. First: it's not hard to beat "decent," especially when your phones are on the 2004 cutting edge of design and you still haven't managed to slim it like a Q or WiFi it like an HTC. Second: PC guys already did figure it out -- that's why you're running Windows Mobile on your phones, remember? Not that we really have to continue, but third: as John Hodgman and Justin Long would have us remember, the sad, disgruntled differences between "PC guys" and Mac guys tend to transcend borders and cultures. Gates isn't Jobs, and Steve's phone certainly isn't going to be riddled with the same issues as our beloved WinMo. No, the iPhone will have its own set of annoying issues, but believe you us, Ed, Apple will "just walk in," so you'd better have a few and-one-more-thing-s up those sleeves of yours if you're thinking about stopping a mass defection.[Via PalmInfocenter]

When I read stories about vendors "laughing" at a new product from monopolists like Microsoft or Apple - I think the end is near.
Time and again I've read stories of people laughing at Microsoft's entry into their market and how there will be no ill effects.
Largely these comments seem nothing more than stalling tactics while the commentor is frantically trying to sell the company.

You hit the nail on the head, Mr. Block. Palm really needs to quit resting on their collective laurels if they intend to fend off all the newcomers who are (or will soon be) doing it better, cheaper, and thinner for less. Bravo!

There's one reason not to buy Palm stock. Management is showing how clueless they are to the demands of consumers. I do like my Treo 700p, but there's plenty of room for improvements.

Laughing huh? Well I wonder if he was laughing when 144,000 Treos went out without mics? Dumbass...He needs to get his crap together and build a decent Treo.

I think it is hilarious that they are laughing. The Treo is nice, but really hasn't had a decent upgrades since the 650. Palm cannot be flippant when other companies are aggressively upgrading and improving their products. Motorola and HTC are already working on rolling out the next iteration of their slim smart phones. What is Palm doing rolling out yet another stocky treo version. More of the same...

man, what a smug motherfucker. I'm reminded of this guy every time my 650 restarts. I can't wait to get a Blackjack or the elusive iPhone or whatever.

iPods suck (low production quality, overcharging, ugliness), Apple sucks (security through obscurity, overcharging proprietary hardware), etc.
Sam @ Nov 22nd 2006 6:21AM
I took you a few years to make a decent phone? This is great news - out with it already!
(Because I KNOW he ain't talkin about the TREO)

I like how the article that states palm complacency is positioned right above another article stating that Sprint users can finally text outside their network with their Palms. Yeah sounds like they've got it all figured out.

I own a Palm 650. I love my Palm 650. I've been blessed by having my work provide me with a Treo 700w and now a 700p. I have been going month to month on my plans until I see Apple walk in with whatever deal they can arrange with any sanity and I will jump so fast away from Palm he's going to think I teleported into the past, and somehow managed to return every palm phone I've ever owned.
This has nothing to with what he's said. It's just reality. I know a ton of people who are various services right now who will leave in an instant just for an Apple designed phone and damn the problems. A few of them will even buy out their existing plans to cancel. Palm's moronic if they can't manage to put an operating system on their phones that's nearly a decade old in conceptualization, regardless of it coming from MS or Palm.

Wow, did this guy get pwned.
