Nextel launches i880 on the high end
Nextel users looking for just a little more luxury then your average... say, i615 provides, your phone has arrived. The long-foretold i880 has finally graced Sprint-Nextel's pages, looking every bit as nifty as the blurry, covert spy shots that preceded its official introduction had us believing. Notable features include a 2 megapixel camera (particularly notable for Nextel, of all carriers), an MP3 player with stereo speakers, dual color displays, and external music controls. Sadly though, the i880 doesn't adhere to military specifications, so don't even think about taking this burgundy-colored beauty into a war zone.

can nextel just go away?
Chris @ Nov 7th 2006 8:06PM
I like the looks of their phones, if they'd just get rid of that damn antenna. What the hell is that mast for? I'm with Ben. Why are they still a separate carrier long after being acquired by Sprint?
fyrestarrter @ Nov 7th 2006 8:31PM
Actually, if you look at recent episodes of CSI you will see that almost all the main characters have been carrying this phone for several episodes already. Check it out on On Demand! And as a former Sprint Customer who migrated over to nextel as soon as the agreement was in place LONG LIVE NEXTEL!

Eventually, it will. But not soon enough.
Jr. @ Nov 7th 2006 8:48PM
You do realize that Nextel utilizes iDEN - a completely separate and incompatible technology from the CDMA Sprint uses, right?
Nextel will go the way of the Dodo...customers will be forced over to the CDMA network for voice and data, and the iDEN network will just be used for Walkie Talkie...then even that will disappear in favor of Qchat...but it will take a couple of years.
Ben @ Nov 7th 2006 9:07PM
CSI was better when they used the V70.
Draco @ Nov 7th 2006 9:51PM
Umm... It's still a pretty f-ugly phone.
I understand the need for ruggedness in the businesses that the Nextel phones are usually used in, but c'mon guys, hire an LG or Motorola designer if Nokia's people can't get it right.
mas90guru @ Nov 8th 2006 5:41AM
The Nextel phones are always solid. Problem is that they're primarily aimed squarely at the "Guy Construction" Market. Just try getting your wife/gf to carry one. The walkie talkie feature is cool as always but the beep-beep in public areas is getting dangerously close to being annoying.
Pricing on this phone seems strangely out of line. I do think this is the last flagship iDen phone, so go wild.

When are that going to make a phone that looks really nice instead of the normal mediocre ones like come 2 mega pixel camera boringggggggggggggggggg.
Nitty @ Nov 8th 2006 6:39AM
If you wanted ruggedness, you wouldn't make it a flip phone, nor motorola, nor would it have an antenna. I'd rather carry a peice of poo then this peice of shit.
Mike @ Nov 8th 2006 10:37AM
Actually, from what I've read and heard, Nextel will eventually migrate over to the sprint side, using their network and push-to-talk service. The Nextel network will then be used for government and military use only.

Looks like Motorola took a page from the Batphone.
Jason @ Nov 8th 2006 12:41PM
For #7
You realize that nearly every iDEN phone is made by motorola so your comment directed at "Nokia's" need to ask Motorola for design tips makes no sense seeing as how moto made that phone and Nokia had nothing to do with it...
Memo @ Nov 8th 2006 11:13PM
Boost Mobile received the i885 which is now posted on the Boost Mobile website. Same features, but a bit different design with the MP3 controls located on the side and a lit Boost emblem.

Hmmm, I guess I am one of the few that actually LOVES the way this phone looks, I ordered mine today (it was upgrade time after all)! And I cannot wait to get it. The Nextel Store had it on display & both the internal & external screens are GORGEOUS! And the sound quality is sweet. I wish I had gotten to play with the Camera though.
mobileGadget @ Nov 9th 2006 2:23AM
doesn't looks like high-end to me (exterior) and how does it looks from the inside??

Here's some more really GOOD pictures on Howard Forum of the phone including the kaypad. BUT I am telling you that pictures do NOT do it justice. It really is an awesome looking & feeling phone. The color may be a bit off for most people but that is what nextel was going for I believe SOMETHING DIFFERENT. The kaypad is actually quite tactile & I love the look of it as well. I do think that nextel is trying to polish it's image a little bit & go away slightly from the ruggedized military style phones. The exterior of this phone feels really awesome in the hand. I have nextel for MANY years (like 5) & I really do this this is by far the best non-construction zone phone they have EVER come out with. Most of the nextel flag stores should have a display by now, go check it out & you will def see what I mean.

I can't wait to get mine tommorrow!! It's an upgrade from my i730 which has lasted me two rough and tumble years. Lots of scratches but the battery is still great, as are the screens. I don't care what people say, my nextel's are here to stay.
It's a lot sleeker than other nextel's and is more razor-esque
Don @ Nov 15th 2006 12:07AM
Dont buy any new nextel phones yet!!!!! :-) They have a couple hybrid phones coming out in the next month or two that work off sprint phone service but still have the nextel direct connect!!! search the model #'s on google and see some pics!!! ic502, ic902 and theres a couple more!!!!
DigitalCactus @ Nov 16th 2006 5:26PM
I'm not a Nextel customer but I do think this is a pretty stylish iDEN phone. I don't care what people say about it. I'd rock it if I had nextel, but sadly I need reception everywhere I go and I can do with out the "chirp" sound going off 80,000 times a day...
Anyway, there are more pics of this phone on phonescoop.com as well as a specs read out in case anyone was wondering
mas90guru @ Nov 20th 2006 10:52AM
If you're going to buy, at least check out the Nextel Sero plans. They include data and have free shipping and zero activation. http://www.sprint.com/sero. Browse Google for the sprint.com email addy's -- of if you're super lazy and don't mind looking like a baby, bounce over to hofo and joing the zillions of noobs posting requests for referrals.

I have a I860 I had it since it first came out, i'm hard on phones i drop it a lot it finnaly is getting beat. i cant complain. i hope the I860 holds up as well considering .....a good cover dose wonders.it absorbs the impact and keeps the dirt and greese out..i hope THEY design one that protects the whole phone.one you can leave on the phone when in use.
