I know how to make it be those songs that come with the phone, but I don't like those...I want it to be one of my songs. I have even tried finding a program to make .mmf files, but none of the programs that make these files works on the the phone when you down load it to the phone. I have found a few midi files and it will use those, but I would like to play my mp3 music ringtones if any way possible. Even if I had to shorten them that would be better than what they have for them.

Is it possible to change the text messaging ringtone to something besides what it allows, like a mp3

Alice Gray

Comments on Hands-on with the Samsung SYNC

Hey everyone, I figured out a way to get your SYNC to play whatever you want it to! It's simpler than I thought it would be but it worked out after playing with it.

Anyways all you have to do is convert your sound files to MMF format, which can be done at online sound converters such as http://w7.media-convert.com

You can set the conversion settings to maximum (stereo, highest frequency, 16bit, noise filter on) and not have to worry about the the SYNC complaining about how big the file is or even how long! Why this works I'm not quite sure... but I figured it is probably because of the MMF format which is standard for ringtones you actually BUY and therefore it doesn't discriminate against it!

I hope this helps everyone! The ringtone issue was a headache to me when I ran into it, so I'm trying to save everyone else from that experience!

Shadow-X

Comments on Hands-on with the Samsung SYNC

i have change file and sent it to my phone with software I purchased but cannot find where to change text message alert tone. any ideas

cindyp

Comments on Hands-on with the Samsung SYNC

Quick edit on my previous post:

It will only work for text messages. It's a different case for incoming call ringtones. The only sound format (that I know of) the SYNC does not discriminate against for incoming calls are MIDIs -- I've tested it and have gotten it to play full 10 minute long MIDI songs.

Of course, no one would want a MIDI for their ringtone. But then again, who would want a 10 minute song for their incoming call ringtone? You'd end up answering and killing the song.

The best possible way to get your incoming call ringtones to work is simply to cut it down to the best 30 seconds [or less] of the song you want and import it to your SYNC.

Shadow-X

Comments on Hands-on with the Samsung SYNC

Just recently my phone's been telling me that I have received '2 text messages' when in fact I've only received one from the sender. This is my second internet enabled phone. My first was the Moto V551 which I've used with media net unlimited for the past 18 months or so. This phone runs circles around the V551, in terms of processor speed, download speed, and display. I would call it a practical internet enabled phone since it has decent speed, like DSL (I think?). This phone does not seem to support "suspending" java apps as did the V551 which was disappointing. I am surprised, but after all it is from a different manufacturer. I am curious about the processor, noting that the Cingular 8525 runs a Samsung processor at 400Mhz. I would have gotten that but for the "PDA connect" plan which costs twice as much as the unlimited plan for this phone. Does anyone know the processor speed of this phone?
I also love the "To do" list. Buttons are not too tactile but I'm hoping I'll get used to that. Only down side has been unexpectedly low sound quality on calls. A few have sounded like the caller was somewhat underwater. Callers have reported that their sound quality was just fine. I hope this is reception related and not phone related. As the days are going by, I'm getting more used to the somewhat underwatery sound quality (compared to the V551). Possibly my ear/brain somehow are adjusting to this. That would be great, because I'd still hate to return it for that reason.
I'll be getting a decent bluetooth for sure now, and think I'll be using that in the car all the time. One other thing . . . seems the fonts in apps such as MyCast and others are a wee bit small. I hope that Samsung can correct this in future software releases.
Other BIG bummer is that Cingular won't insure this phone either!!! How ridicilious is that?????

Tim Reilly

Comments on Hands-on with the Samsung SYNC

I have had a problem with moisture or oil in the middle of the LCD screen. I am on my 2nd phone since replacing the 1st one after almost 4 weeks, and the same problem has occurred again after 3 more weeks. Well, the 2nd week of February the handset volume went, I was unable to hear a caller unless I put the phone on speaker. So, now Samsung service has had the phone since 2/15/07 and they are supposedly still trying to fix it. This is ridiculous. This one has the AT&T logo but same SGH-A707. My problem is the ringtone size. All the ringtones I made for my other sync are between 300K and 600K and they worked fine. This one won't allow any file sizes over 300K to be used as a ringtone. I was told by the rep that the OS upgrade must have caused it. My old Cingular branded sync had a camera issue and I replaced it under warranty with the new AT&T version. All of my ring-tones were about 350K in size to I made news ring-tones using a slightly lower bit-rate. Trust me a 128 is perfectly acceptable for a ring-tone. Also I like that the options soft key on the home screen now leads to a customizable menu, since I didn’t use mobile TV and radio. But my biggest joy came when I learned I can now listen to my music while using the phones other features. This upgrade is well worth having to remake all my ring-tones.

college boy

Comments on Hands-on with the Samsung SYNC

We purchased three Sync's in the middle of June 2007. Within 3 weeks, two of the displays went blank and looked like oil under the display. I called AT&T and they told me that there was a memo from Samsung about the problem and they replaced both phones without charge. The first thing they want you to do though is check under the battery. There is a little tab there. If it is any color other than white, it means there was moisture damage or another issue that they might not cover. It is definitely worth the call to your phone provider. This is not a recall but if you notify your provider, they cover it. It was a certain batch of the phones that are bad. Hope this helps those with the "oil" in the display issue.

powitts

Comments on Hands-on with the Samsung SYNC

The sync is the worst phone we've ever had. My son had the problem with the OILy looking screen, then it totally went out. The battery is still white so there was no water damage, but they will probably never admit that. I think Cingular is the network with the MOST dropped calls due to this inferior phone. My kitten batted my sons phone off the coffee table onto the CARPET and the screen cracked! We get messages saying Emergency calls only but no one eles phone in the car gets that message. I was told it was due to 911 taking over the cell towers. I don't believe there is that many emergencies in that town, especially when no one else's phone but the sync does it. I have missed job interview phone calls, spent alot on gas driving to areas so I can actually use the darn thing since i have to pay the bill. One Cingular person said they'd cancel the contract and give us a refund, one said we would get a Nokia as a replacement. They must all be politicians or lying must run in their families because everyone there has told me a different tale. The truth is the phone sucks and if anyone knows of a class action lawsuit against Cingular and the Sync let me know. It sucks big time!

Diana

Comments on Hands-on with the Samsung SYNC

My wife's phone recently died so we decided it was time to upgrade. We ended up at BestBuy since the AT&T store didn't have any upgrade phones less than $50 and we ended up with the Sync. Well, after a week we returned it for the Nokia 6126.
With the Sync, we had constant reception problems. I couldn't get a signal in my office (while the 6126 picks up an average signal), my wife complained about hearing herself echo in the phone, and all the calls came across with a lot of static. When it comes to options, the phone doesn't have voice dialing!!! If a phone is advertised as handsfree and bluetooth capable, what is the point in not having voice dialing? I refuse to use a phone in the car that I have to open and dial, even using speed dial.
Other than that, the phone feels nice, I really liked the camera, and the music controls on the front are something that I already miss with my Nokia.
Just as a side note...why do new customers get all the good deals? You would think a company would want to keep their existing customers, but the way it currently works you are better off switching carriers every two years to get the best phones as the best prices.

farscapesg1

Comments on Hands-on with the Samsung SYNC

We bought two Sync phones in July. The main one right now is I want to send one of the pictures I have taken to a contact in my address book. I thought I had figured that out going through the "My Stuff" and "Graphics" tabs. I scrolled to the picture i want to send and in options it only has three choices to send 1)via MultiMedia Message (which I do not understand what that means) 2) via Bluetooth (which I do not have) and 3)to ImageStation (which I can't find any information on what that is). I attempted through the MultiMedia Message and added through the options "Add Recipients" in which I went to "contacts" and chose the person (my son) to send it to (It seemed the right thing to do). So I added him and went to send but keep getting the error message "Sending failed User Barred". I can not find any information in my manual on what that means and how to rectify.
