We're still at a stage where new 3G handsets on Cingular are a bit of a novelty, so we thought we'd take the opportunity to get a closer look today at the latest entry from Samsung. The
SYNC (alias SGH-A707) replaces the rather homely
ZX-20, and in doing so, ushers in a slew of new
music-centric features on Cingular's network. At $50 after rebate, the phone
seems like one heck of a value, too -- on paper, anyway. After all, you get a 2 megapixel camera (still strangely rare in the American market), A2DP, a QVGA display, touch-sensitive external controls, and microSD expansion. Does the real thing live up to the spec sheet? Read on for our quick take.
The phone looks great and feels great in the hand. One could make the argument that it's not quite as hot as the HSDPA-enabled CU500 -- especially since LG's flip has some brushed metal accents inside and out -- but considering the SYNC's price point, you won't hear a peep of complaint out of us. We were digging the phone's size, too. Though not terribly thick, the SYNC's outline is somewhat large (rivaling even a small candybar when closed) giving it a comfortable, easy feel when open and in use. Of course, all this happens without sacrificing any pocketability. We're used to lugging around bigass smartphones, after all.
Though we've heard some early complaints about earpiece volume, we thought the A707 was plenty loud and clear on the horn. Ring clarity and quality is superb, though we could've used a touch more volume in that arena. Fortunately, the vibrate function is plenty strong, so we're not too worried about missing calls.
Let's turn our attention for a moment to that screen, that glorious screen. QVGA displays are still a rarity on our GSM carriers here in the States, so it shocks us a bit to gingerly open the SYNC's flip to be greeted with 240 horizontal and 320 vertical pixels. At any rate, it
makes this phone, and we couldn't imagine going back to a 3G phone without it (we're looking at you, CU500). Cingular Video takes on a new life, menus are beautiful, and the fonts are anti-aliased -- which, for things like text messaging, makes a world of difference. Web browsing proved to be an equally dazzling experience, especially at HSDPA speeds, which were predictably blazing. We didn't give a shot at tethering, but we suspect we'd be limited more by Bluetooth's bandwidth than HSDPA's.
Bluetooth gave us mixed results. We had no trouble pairing a Samsung WEP200 headset (surprise, surprise) but our Logitech A2DP headphones couldn't link up for some reason -- so sadly, the jury's still out on the SYNC's wireless stereo capabilities. We remain hopeful, though, that the tech will eventually revolutionize the way we listen to music just as soon as manufacturers start making some decent 'phones and handsets start supporting them as a matter of course.
Our very quick, knee-jerk reaction is that this is a great phone, and for $50 after rebate, it's pretty tough to go wrong. Depending on the
N75's pricing, it could be facing some pretty stiff upmarket competition in the near term -- and the torrent of 3G hardware should be pretty consistent heading into 2007 (we hope). But as we sit here in early November 2006, we can say with some confidence that this is the best bang for your HSDPA buck.

Heads up for everyone.
Product Advisory: Samsung a707 STOP SELL/STOP SHIP – DO NOT MERCHANDIZE
PRIORITY: RED – Heavy Impact to Existing Inventory. Samsung has discovered an issue with the production a707/Cingular SYNC devices.
(Fri, November 03, 2006)
Issue/Volume number:
The device presents error messages and does not allow the sync and load of Windows Media rights-protected music. Cingular believes this is related to an issue or failure in the manufacturing process.
Due to the seriousness of this issue devices should not be sold until a root cause and root solution is identified At this time, devices should not be returned to the Distribution Center. Additional information regarding the disposition of these units will be provided in an update to this advisory.

lol.. So I don't know what the issue is.. I have never used Windows DRM music.. neither should anyone else..

I played with this phone in-store on Friday...not too bad. The salesperson was hyping up the fact that it is 3G...even though we won't have the service in my city for another year.

well hi everyone I'm just here to say if anyone knows how to take the pictures and ringtones off that the phone comes with?
Tim Reilly @ Jan 7th 2007 3:18AM
I've had this phone for a few days. This is my second internet enabled phone. My first was the Moto V551 which I've used with media net unlimited for the past 18 months or so. This phone runs circles around the V551, in terms of processor speed, download speed, and display. I would call it a practical internet enabled phone since it has decent speed, like DSL (I think?). This phone does not seem to support "suspending" java apps as did the V551 which was disappointing. I am surprised, but after all it is from a different manufacturer. I am curious about the processor, noting that the Cingular 8525 runs a Samsung processor at 400Mhz. I would have gotten that but for the "PDA connect" plan which costs twice as much as the unlimited plan for this phone. Does anyone know the processor speed of this phone?
I also love the "To do" list. Buttons are not too tactile but I'm hoping I'll get used to that. Only down side has been unexpectedly low sound quality on calls. A few have sounded like the caller was somewhat underwater. Callers have reported that their sound quality was just fine. I hope this is reception related and not phone related. As the days are going by, I'm getting more used to the somewhat underwatery sound quality (compared to the V551). Possibly my ear/brain somehow are adjusting to this. That would be great, because I'd still hate to return it for that reason.
I'll be getting a decent bluetooth for sure now, and think I'll be using that in the car all the time. One other thing . . . seems the fonts in apps such as MyCast and others are a wee bit small. I hope that Samsung can correct this in future software releases.
Other BIG bummer is that Cingular won't insure this phone either!!! How ridicilious is that?????
Br3nn4n @ Jan 8th 2007 2:06PM
This phone IS cool, I just got one yesterday...EDGE is actually pretty fast, though Cingular never mentioned to me that 3G is still being built in my area! Eh, that's not a problem, they promised on the phone today to get me some 3G coverage soon...anyway back on topic. The screen is simply beautiful, quite big I must say. The camera is very clear in the pictures I've taken (though it doesn't really like low-light).
Those who've seen the Phonescoop video review where the guy says "there's a landscape mode, but it doesn't really change the video size"...let me tell you: that is the truth, if you're watching a clip direct from Cingular. If you go to a site such as, say...www.zoovision.com and watch some of the video streams there, it plays full screen on landscape mode!
@kirbo20-Is there a way to know if the phone you have has that problem?
Gr8hrted @ Feb 19th 2007 7:15PM
I have had a problem with moisture or oil in the middle of the LCD screen. I am on my 2nd phone since replacing the 1st one after almost 4 weeks, and the same problem has occurred again after 3 more weeks. I really like the phone otherwise, but I'm wondering if this is a production problem as I have never experienced this with any of my previous cell phones (mot & nok). Otherwise good for phone service, music and video.
mark @ Nov 2nd 2007 2:11PM
same problem with "moisture spot" or "oil spot". the guy at the cingular store said he had seen quite a few do it. after a few months mine cleared up. then on two of my A707's the interior screen on the front developed cracks and an unusable screen. these phones were not droped or abused. it is a manufacturing defect. samsung will not admit to it.
Don Moyer @ Oct 19th 2007 4:25PM
We bought one of the A707's and within 2 weeks a bubble spot appeared on the lcd. We thought something had dripped on it and went to wipe it off and the screen cracked. Took it back to store and they refused to replace it, no insurance so we bought another one, plus a second for a deal they were having. Got insurance this time. One of them did the same thing within a couple weeks. Sent it back, paid $50 for replacement, and it did the same thing!!! That is THREE of these phones within a few months!!!I called Samsung today. They said it is the 1st time they have ever had a complaint!! Yeah, right!!! Someone is supposed to call me back about it!! Everyone needs to call them. There is definitely a problem with these phone!!!!!

I bought this phone the end of November. Within 2 weeks I exchanged it for another because the battery wasn't holding a charge. Well, the 2nd week of February the handset volume went, I was unable to hear a caller unless I put the phone on speaker. So, now Samsung service has had the phone since 2/15/07 and they are supposedly still trying to fix it. This is ridiculous. The phone was barely 2 months old and if they can't fix it, they'll give me a refurbished one instead. YIPPY!!! My recommendation...DON'T BUY THIS PHONE!!!

You shuld have never sent it back... somehow your factory presets where lost or changed... all you needed to do was - *#0002*28346# then find yout prob. Say your ear volume was bad do this ...
# after that code to access test mode. then 2 for call config. now press 1 for RCV RX Call Vol. there will be 6 #'s and 6 db sets. just make the db sets range top to bottom lw to high try -0.3db to 12.3db you really dont need to go to 12.3db's but hey d what you like. to enter the db sets just click the # you want t change say 6 for high let screen flash then punch in your settinf. use the * key to ADD A - IN FRONT OR YOUR DB# if need be. then click ok. db input ex. 123= 12.3db's no need to type the (.) . the RCV setings are fo when you are in a call setings. you can hit # a few times and find more settings like for your speakerphone and even mp3 and mmf volume sets. Audio you will find ear sets that will most likely fix your prob. if the abve ex. did not work. so hey have them send you your phone back and fix it yourself. any questins feel free to e-mail me

I have loaded all my contact information, including ringtones and pictures. How do I get the picture or the name of the contact to appear on my LCD screen when the call comes in.
Kris @ Mar 26th 2007 4:18PM
Mark,
To set a picture for caller ID on the SYNC open the picture goto options then set as and select caller ID than once you are there just select the person you want it associated with.
On the phone itself I just got it last saturday and love it. I upgraded early from a NOKIA 6102 because that phone dropped almost every single call I had on it. This one is much better and I am still having fun playing with all of the features.

Bought one of these in Jan..
It stopped making and recieving phone calls last week. The warranty replacement showed up and it won't make or recieve calls, either, so Cingular is sending me a third.
My guess? It won't work, either.
Garbage. I'm going back to my little LG cheapo. Not fancy, but it actually makes phone calls.

after only 2 days I have what looks like an oil stain showing up in the middle of the screen. I see I am not the only one with this problem. I wish I could delete all these "service numbers" in the address book. compared to the razr this phone is not very customizable. cant quickly access the camera. to see the time display I have to push a button and wait a while. I wish I had my razr back.
Klebb @ Sep 29th 2007 6:56PM
I had the same problem after about 4 weeks with my first Sync. At&t sent me another and I sent the bad one to the warranty address in Texas. Got it back with in about 3 weeks with a note that it was my fault. Not! Got that straight and now my second phone has the same problem. Called AT&T and another phone is on the way. They said that the I should never have been sent the second phone as Samsung has a product advisory out because the phone overheats, which causes the "oil." There is a new model that has vents on the sides to let the heat out. We'll see if that solves the problem.
John Stracke @ May 16th 2007 11:27AM
"is anyone having trouble with there sd card being read everytime you turn your phone on? i have to take it out and put it back in each time i turn on my phone." -- I've had a bit of that. I've had the phone only 2 days, so it's hard to tell yet; but, yeah, the first time I turned it on with the card in, the card wasn't recognized. I had a bleep of a time getting it back in, too; it just would not click into place.

I want to know if there is a way to have the external display light up by touching one of the external buttons while the sync is closed. I like to quick take out my phone and check the time and I don't want to have to open it up in order for the external clock to light up. Is there a setting that I can't find in the menu to make this happen? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Scott, that problem bugged me for days until I finally figured out that if you just hold one of the side buttons for a few seconds, the external display appears!
Kimberly @ Sep 4th 2007 12:41PM
Hi Scoot,
Did you ever get a response regarding the external clock on the Samsung Sync? That is the only thing I really hate about this phone - I used my old phone as a watch all the time.

I have the same oil under the screen problem. I called Cingular, and they assured me that I must have dropped it. They offered to have a 3rd party look at it to see if it is covered by warranty... I doubt it will be. This is terrible.
Joe @ Jul 11th 2007 5:26PM
I loved my Sync when I got it a month or two back, but I had some crackling in my calls that caused me to get a refurb. This one has the AT&T logo but same SGH-A707. My problem is the ringtone size. All the ringtones I made for my other sync are between 300K and 600K and they worked fine. This one won't allow any file sizes over 300K to be used as a ringtone. I was told by the rep that the OS upgrade must have caused it. Who in the heck upgrades an OS to decrease capacity?
college boy @ Jul 12th 2007 12:34AM
The new OS upgrade brings a lot of welcome improvements to this already awesome phone. My old Cingular branded sync had a camera issue and I replaced it under warranty with the new AT&T version. All of my ring-tones were about 350K in size to I made news ring-tones using a slightly lower bit-rate. Trust me a 128 is perfectly acceptable for a ring-tone. Also I like that the options soft key on the home screen now leads to a customizable menu, since I didnt use mobile TV and radio. But my biggest joy came when I learned I can now listen to my music while using the phones other features. This upgrade is well worth having to remake all my ring-tones.

my color is red. the battery cover is broken. where can I get another cover
powitts @ Jul 22nd 2007 12:38PM
We purchased three Sync's in the middle of June 2007. Within 3 weeks, two of the displays went blank and looked like oil under the display. I called AT&T and they told me that there was a memo from Samsung about the problem and they replaced both phones without charge. The first thing they want you to do though is check under the battery. There is a little tab there. If it is any color other than white, it means there was moisture damage or another issue that they might not cover. It is definitely worth the call to your phone provider. This is not a recall but if you notify your provider, they cover it. It was a certain batch of the phones that are bad. Hope this helps those with the "oil" in the display issue.
Diana @ Jul 25th 2007 11:22AM
The sync is the worst phone we've ever had. My son had the problem with the OILy looking screen, then it totally went out. The battery is still white so there was no water damage, but they will probably never admit that. I think Cingular is the network with the MOST dropped calls due to this inferior phone. My kitten batted my sons phone off the coffee table onto the CARPET and the screen cracked! We get messages saying Emergency calls only but no one eles phone in the car gets that message. I was told it was due to 911 taking over the cell towers. I don't believe there is that many emergencies in that town, especially when no one else's phone but the sync does it. I have missed job interview phone calls, spent alot on gas driving to areas so I can actually use the darn thing since i have to pay the bill. One Cingular person said they'd cancel the contract and give us a refund, one said we would get a Nokia as a replacement. They must all be politicians or lying must run in their families because everyone there has told me a different tale. The truth is the phone sucks and if anyone knows of a class action lawsuit against Cingular and the Sync let me know. It sucks big time!
farscapesg1 @ Aug 15th 2007 3:10PM
My wife's phone recently died so we decided it was time to upgrade. We ended up at BestBuy since the AT&T store didn't have any upgrade phones less than $50 and we ended up with the Sync. Well, after a week we returned it for the Nokia 6126.
With the Sync, we had constant reception problems. I couldn't get a signal in my office (while the 6126 picks up an average signal), my wife complained about hearing herself echo in the phone, and all the calls came across with a lot of static. When it comes to options, the phone doesn't have voice dialing!!! If a phone is advertised as handsfree and bluetooth capable, what is the point in not having voice dialing? I refuse to use a phone in the car that I have to open and dial, even using speed dial.
Other than that, the phone feels nice, I really liked the camera, and the music controls on the front are something that I already miss with my Nokia.
Just as a side note...why do new customers get all the good deals? You would think a company would want to keep their existing customers, but the way it currently works you are better off switching carriers every two years to get the best phones as the best prices.

I am attempting to be up to date on my Samsung SYNC but am having a few problems (At 77 years old it gets a little more difficult figuring this all out). The main one right now is I want to send one of the pictures I have taken to a contact in my address book. I thought I had figured that out going through the "My Stuff" and "Graphics" tabs. I scrolled to the picture i want to send and in options it only has three choices to send 1)via MultiMedia Message (which I do not understand what that means) 2) via Bluetooth (which I do not have) and 3)to ImageStation (which I can't find any information on what that is). I attempted through the MultiMedia Message and added through the options "Add Recipients" in which I went to "contacts" and chose the person (my son) to send it to (It seemed the right thing to do). So I added him and went to send but keep getting the error message "Sending failed User Barred". I can not find any information in my manual on what that means and how to rectify. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
Jason @ Nov 24th 2007 12:33PM
I think i know your issue - and it's not your problem at all.
Your son probably cannot recieve multimedia messages. Not all phones can.
The ones that do, you should have no problem.
Hope this helps.

two questions. under the display settings there is a place to turn on, or turn off, the "touch light". what is that? i've turned it on and turned it off and don't seem to notice anything that relates to "touch light" going on.
second question...someone mentioned earlier how to get the volume turned up.....i'd like to here the answer to that if it really can be turned up higher.
James @ Dec 27th 2007 9:04AM
OK, the "touch light" feature lights up the play/pause, rewind, and ff buttons on the front panel when you are using the media player. Since they don't click, I always leave the touch light on.

Can someone help with this, I can't figure out how to change my text messaging ringtone to a song. I know how to make it be those songs that come with the phone, but I don't like those...I want it to be one of my songs. I have even tried finding a program to make .mmf files, but none of the programs that make these files works on the the phone when you down load it to the phone. I have found a few midi files and it will use those, but I would like to play my mp3 music ringtones if any way possible. Even if I had to shorten them that would be better than what they have for them.
Is it possible to change the text messaging ringtone to something besides what it allows, like a mp3
Shadow-X @ Jun 12th 2008 9:45PM
Hey everyone, I figured out a way to get your SYNC to play whatever you want it to! It's simpler than I thought it would be but it worked out after playing with it.
Anyways all you have to do is convert your sound files to MMF format, which can be done at online sound converters such as http://w7.media-convert.com
You can set the conversion settings to maximum (stereo, highest frequency, 16bit, noise filter on) and not have to worry about the the SYNC complaining about how big the file is or even how long! Why this works I'm not quite sure... but I figured it is probably because of the MMF format which is standard for ringtones you actually BUY and therefore it doesn't discriminate against it!
I hope this helps everyone! The ringtone issue was a headache to me when I ran into it, so I'm trying to save everyone else from that experience!
Shadow-X @ Jun 12th 2008 10:02PM
Quick edit on my previous post:
It will only work for text messages. It's a different case for incoming call ringtones. The only sound format (that I know of) the SYNC does not discriminate against for incoming calls are MIDIs -- I've tested it and have gotten it to play full 10 minute long MIDI songs.
Of course, no one would want a MIDI for their ringtone. But then again, who would want a 10 minute song for their incoming call ringtone? You'd end up answering and killing the song.
The best possible way to get your incoming call ringtones to work is simply to cut it down to the best 30 seconds [or less] of the song you want and import it to your SYNC.
