What is the purpose of having wi-fi on a phone? Is it supposed to make up for the lack good data services? Just want to make sure I understand.
Slocko @ Oct 25th 2006 8:42PM
wifi is so you can use it wherever there are wifi spots. lots of airports now have free wifi spots you can use. i was in the mall the other day and they were offering a wifi spot (Aventura Mall in South Florida).
not everyone wants to spend money on a data plan. i know i don't.
Ben @ Oct 25th 2006 11:32PM
Also in the bay area they are going to offer basically city wide wifi. In San Jose, Google and other companies are working there self into the free wifi thing. Why pay for internet when you can get it for free. last i heard san jose maybe covered 100% by wifi hot spots.

I picked one up this morning and thus far I really like it.
WarWolf @ Oct 26th 2006 6:55AM
I showed up at the store at 8:30am to pick one up. Since I was upgrading my current phone/account they couldn't do it because the computer system wasn't updated, they said it was on west coast time.
Came back at noon and got everything taken care of. While I was there about 3-4 more people came in and bought one, so they definitely have a winner on their hands.

WiFi is primarily for corporate environments and Europe, where dataplans cost as much as health insurance does here.
Judging by the howard forums comments people are loving this phone. Not like the many buyer's regret posts seen after the MDA launch.

is anyone selling a non-tmobile version of this phone? I'd get it, but I kinda like cingular...

Had this since the 25th. Right now there is no other phone that combines size and features as well as the dash on American shores. I've had the pearl, the q, the treo, this one is the best, bar none. honestly as long as you don't have big fingers, there ins't a better smartphone out there.
Steve @ Nov 8th 2006 2:54PM
There's your Q vs. Dash compare. I guess it depends on what you're looking for in a device.

For those who are unaware, EV-DO speed is approximately 400 - 700 Kbps, while EDGE is 70 - 135 Kbps.

No buyers remorse from this normally picky gadget guy. even the guys in the T-mobile stores with a Pearl, said they suffered from Dash envy (mostly because of the built in wi-fi). Only drawback at this point is not with the device itself, but with available accessories because I can't find a silicone case manufacturer for it yet.

Just got my Dash a couple days ago and it's fantastic. I honestly don't know how I lived before it (I had a MotoV3). I'm also very glad I chose it over the MDA/Wizard because it does everything I want and the size and one-handed-capabilities are much better.

After my last post, and another week of playing around I want to inquire if anyone else has run into problems with the password on the device. I'm still happy with the device, but every week or so, the device won't allow me to type in my full password to unlock the device. It lets me type 2 characters in and then gives error beeps on each subsequent key entry. My only way around it was to take the battery out and reboot. It then allows normal entry of the password to unlock the device. Weird.
Related to the security password, it's seems antithetical to have the password displayed in clear text on the screen. I wish it would hide it with asterisks when I'm typing it in. but maybe that's just me...

All you have to do is call T-Mobile and they will get the information on the phone from you, then they send it to the company that makes it and then the company will send it to you. When I bought the Dash I gave my mom(cingular) my phone and called and she said no problem. If you buy the phone it is legally yours and NO cell phone company can tell you that you can not have it. It would be like Wal-Mart putting a password on all tv's they sold and you having to get permission from them to watch it. The ladie I spoke with at T-Mobile store even told me that they have to provide you with a unlock code.
April @ Jul 16th 2007 9:01PM
Also a note on unlocking cell phones. Each cell phone will have a diffrent code, it will vary on the IEM number and the type. The T-Mobile reprsentitve that I spoke with said not to use the companies that try and sell you a unlock code they arte just out to rip you off. So don't scared to call your cell phone provided, by law they have to give you the unlock code for your phone.
Also I went from the razor to the Dash and I love it, just remember to back up your phone to your computer before updating the phone, you will loose everything you added.
