Though it's known simply as the PCS-1400 to UTStarcom, Virgin Mobile has a history of christening its phones with creative names, and the trend continues here: enter the "Slice." The phone looks a bit like UTStarcom's previously seen
UT1200 for GSM networks but rocks CDMA instead (obviously), bringing 10mm-thick slimphone goodness to prepaid users on the cheap -- just $50. Specs are pretty much what you might expect for a $50 phone, with a single-band 1900MHz radio, 128 x 128 display, 32MB of internal storage, and a speakerphone, but no camera or Bluetooth to be found. No word on an official availability date for the Slice, but it looks like Circuit City will be happy to sell you one as we speak.
[Thanks, Gusto and
Jeremy]

this phone has been at my local target for about 2 weeks.
glenview, il.. outside of chicago.
this phone is so ugly, and the keypad is ridiculously cramped and uncomfortable. if you're going to get a cheap virgin mobile phone, save $20 and buy the oystr.. at least you'll be able to use its keypad without rear ending someone.

Yeah, it's available at Wal-Mart too. I have one, and I really like it so far. But yeah, the built in ringers and wallpapers blow. lol It has really good reception though (on par with my Sanyo 4930 minus the roaming capabilities, and I live out in the country).

Having had several of Virgin Mobile's other offerings, including the Slider Sonic and the Oystr, I have to say that the Slice is the only one of these phones that is worth anything in terms of quality and functionality. The Slider had a camera, but was one of the cheapest handsets I have ever used, while the Oystr was just sub-standard overall. Since I am actually someone who uses my phone and doesn't care about built-in wallpaper or ringtones, (and there are no ACTUAL ringers in the Kyocera phones - just music, which doesn't work for me since I am not 14) the Slice is built like a very tiny tank, gets more bars of reception in all locations around my town, and has the loudest and clearest audio of all of the VM phones I have used. This one is a keeper.

I just bought a slice from Radio Shack on sale for 19.99 and I love it! It's a nice phone for the money. The reception is good and if you don't like the built-in ringtones and graphics the cost to download from virgin mobile is also really inexpensive. So all in all, I'd say that it's a great value.

I got it for $20 off craigslist. For a light cellphone user this is a cheap phone and a cheap phone service. Does it get any better than this? I don't think so.
I spent a few bucks on a couple of ring tones and wallpapers because, as the comments above reveal, the standard options are revolting. Now looking for another one, used of course, for my wife.

Hi, I love the slice, I picked it up in Buffalo. Here's my problem :( I am having difficulty getting it to work for my carrier Bell Mobility Canada. Theoretically because they are on the same network, CDMA, it should work but I am having problems getting a valid ESN # that will work with my carrier. Any ideas out there would be graetly appreciated!!!
Thanx

To the fellow who's trying to get his american Virgin phone to work with Bell Mobility in Canada -- tough luck :(
Virgin phones are firmly locked onto Virgin's network. And while certain GSM carriers can technically be circumvented by using unlocking software, With CDMA carriers, you're wholly dependent on the company to "release" your ESN to work with another carrier.
Your best bet would be to call Virgin USA and ask them to release your ESN so you can use your phone in a different country. They might. But they're not obligated to.
If you wish to take advantage of cheaper phone prices in the states, you are much better off buying Verizon phones. Most of them come unlocked. (The Verizon Inpulse ones don't -- you have to use their service for several months for them to release the ESN.)
