Treo 750v threaded SMS / MMS app hacked for all
If you're anything like us, you've been waiting for a threaded SMS / MMS app to relieve our mobile Outlook view on messaging with Windows Mobile. Well, some dear sweet blessed soul has answered the call. Hacked directly out of a Treo 750v, which featured Palm's WinMo take on their long-lauded threaded SMS feature, now you too can have IM-like text convos with your pals with a minimum of hacking. Merely install the app, make two quick registry edits and restart your phone. (If you're down with MMS you may have to reconfigure your MMS servers.) It worked like a charm when we tested to see if it was the real deal, though we understand it doesn't work with VGA displays (i.e. the Universal.) We're definitely not vouching for the legality of this one, however.

I would also highly recommend you SMS-Chat at http://iwindowsmobile.com/threaded-sms-messaging.html
This little piece of software looks great. The GUI is something special and how it allows to do everything with a fick of a finger! Check it out and you'll see that SMS-Chat is by far the best pocket pc software for threaded sms messaging!

There is a great thread SMS app by Empirical Solutions.
It is very fast, has a neat - albeit simple - display, can send outgoing messages to multiple people at once, has repeatable alarms, and myriad options for the layout.
It supports Landscape and Portrait (great for slide out keyboards and has an excellent Help file.
At $7.50 it's cheap too.

Anyone know the mms gateway information for verizon... this rocks, but i cant find the gateway address and such for mms.
Tino @ Oct 18th 2006 7:04PM
Will it work for the Q?
mike @ Oct 18th 2006 7:58PM
well, i installed it on my 700w and its a great app, but it does break one thing. normally you can go through your contacts and instead of pressing mobile or work, you can press text. Now with this installed, it trys to send an email to the user and does not use the new text program. hopefully there is a way to fix that.

"i tried it on Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone, and not surprisingly, it doesn't work too well. it installs fine, but when running keeps generating exceptions in device.exe and gwes.exe. also, the UI does not work well because it's designed for Pocket PC. again, no surprise, but in case any smartphone users are tempted to try it, consider yourself warned." From a guy on that forum. So Q sounds like a no-go.

The Palm based Treo's have done this for a while. My old Treo 600 did. My new 700P does...

So after 5 or so hours using it I've uninstalled it and gone back to Mobile Outlook. The lack of 'smart handling' for the on-screen inputs is something I can't overlook, the Keypad covers the bottom half of the threaded message, it isn't intuitive enough to know when input is and isn't required (to toggle itself) and if I have it toggled and close the messaging application to my today screen the Keypad remains on occasion, sans toggle button, so it's stuck covering my today screen.
It makes me sad (god I'm a nerd) that this is as good as it'll ever get.

So Ryan, is it true that you never wanted to hang out with Evan?
flamer's grill @ Oct 19th 2006 10:20AM
Up and running on my Sprint PPC-6700. I haven't actually done anything other than send TEST messages, but it seems to work nicely.
jamesus @ Oct 19th 2006 2:00PM
Installed, but there is a bug about the text messages not being sent in a timely manner when 'chatting.' Also, the cab file is not longer hosted on the XDA site.
Kevin @ Oct 19th 2006 10:20PM
So I'm guessing this wouldn't work with my Motorola Mpx 220? It runs Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition (Smartphone edition)
Also, the file is no longer on the site, as jamesus says.
AGreen BHM @ Oct 20th 2006 12:13AM
The file isn't hosted on that site anymore but with a little bit of searching it can be found. I'm not sure how it's doing on devices other than Treos, but I know that on the 700w/wx there is an issue with messages being sent to the "Outbox" rather than being sent immediately once a conversation becomes threaded. We are currently working on a fix for this over at the TreoCentral.com forums.

I just got the htc s260(excalibur/dash) after owning a treo 650 for the past 2 years. I've grown very fond of the texting conversation system used on the palm. Is this system unavailable on the htc? Not sure I can live without it.
Thanks

I installed this CAB on my Tilt and it works beautifully. The only thing that the Treo had that the 8925 didn't have was the threaded text messaging. There is only one problem. In the threaded SMS program, when you go to "add media" (like a picture), it's all grayed out and won't let me select it. So, I can't send any MMS messages. How do I fix this?
