PalmSource, RIP: 2003 - 2006
Yes, the name "PalmSource" is going away; of course, we all knew that PalmSource's days as a corporate identity were numbered when Japan's ACCESS scooped up the former Palm subsidiary last year, so let us concentrate not on the death of one logo, but on the birth of another. Simultaneous with the rebranding, ACCESS has retooled its corporate logo (pictured bottom), apparently "signifying the Company's evolution as a global corporation." Ultimately, be they PalmSource, ACCESS, Be, or anything else, all we really care about is seeing that Linux goodness find its way into some devices we can actually buy, so how about y'all spend less time on your branding initiatives and more time heads-down in the code, mkay?[Via Brighthand]

WTF? So all in all, access spends a boat load of money to buy palm, essentially ditches there O.S for some fresh "linux goodness." Ok I'm with them so far, but now they ditch the name palm source ? I thought the only reason why they bought Palm source was so that they would be able to brand thier O.S as something that the masses would understand... What did they get out of the Palm Source acquisition? Patents? I'm confused...

A quick note, this is not new information, it was setup at the time of purchase. When Access acquired the company "PalmSource" they never acquired the name. Palm, PalmOne, and PalmSource are names owned by Palm. So when Access purchased PalmSoure, they acquired a product not a name.... anyways... as for the linux side of the thing, PalmSource had started down that road before Access swept them up. And yes I agree with the post. I'm a Palm OS fan, I could care less what it is called, just finish the linux version so we can buy it.

From what I remember, wasn't palmsource already working on a linux update prior to their acquistition by access? And I remember there was some deal struck between palmone and palmsource for palmone to take the palm name solely for themselves. Can someone correct me on this if my memory is off?

The new logo isn't Web2.0 compliant.

I guess we're not getting that firmware update for our 700p's, huh...
