BlackBerry 8800 specs leaked?
The Pearl's all well and good, but judging from the sheer amount of buzz, the full QWERTY-sporting 8800 might be the BlackBerry everyone is holding out for. New intel from BlackBerry Cool suggests that we might all have to cool our jets for a full half year before any of the handset's variants filter into stores, but at least we have a little reading material for you in the meanwhiles. The leaked spec sheet promises a landscape QVGA display, 1.3-megapixel cam with video recording capability, 64MB of ROM expandable via microSD, Bluetooth 2.0, speakerphone, and that all-important 802.11g radio. Of course, none of these details are confirmed, but everything seems in line with what we might expect -- including, sadly, the spring '07 launch window.

Looks awesome....maybe I'll have to hold out for one of these instead of an E61...

Look, I need to buy a phone.
Why don't all these companies lay their goods on the line so I can pick a phone and not have new modelitis!!!
First I was getting the Pearl, but it has no video cam.
So I decided to get the T-Mo Dash, but that is WinMo and I'm on the fence about that.
And now this is announced but I can't wait that long.
Soon the slim Treo 800P will be announced and I'll never get a new phone.

Its nice.... If they can pull off Wifi, why can't palm pull it off? When are we going to get a meaningfull update to Palm OS?
Does Blackberry have documents togo? Can you run remote desktop or VNC? aaarrrgH!

Why do they need palm on this? It's a Blackberry. What they've got going for their base is great. If they can add wifi and expandable memory and more multimedia options and it be as hassle free and intuitive as in the past, than I think they have themselves another winner. The 1.3 megapixel camera sorta sucks, but it's not a big deal, not much a pt. a new phone coming out w/ only 1.3 in 2007 if you put on one at all though. Does anyone know about the processor upgrade if there is one? At 450 or so Mhz and an even better web browser, this thing would be even more fantastic. For palm, I'd look for it on the treo 750p whenever that comes.

I really wish the first design seen here:
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/09/23/the-boy-genius-report-pictures-of-blackberry-8800/
would be released in the US. Unfortunately it's got a QWERTZ keyboard, so it's bound for germany or somewheres close. That's too bad - i think it looks like the metal head of the TERMINATOR. And I love it for that.
The one bound for the US looks boring.

You guys need a vacation.

This is coming to Sprint at the same time. It will have "world phone" capabilities... finally.
jyoung1685 @ Oct 5th 2006 12:26PM
Wow,coming to sprint? I wonder if or when it's coming to Verizon?
GD @ Oct 5th 2006 12:41PM
How is it coming to Sprint when it says EDGE... Cingular/TMobile more likely Cingular, and hope the keys are better than the Pearls
OGHowie @ Oct 5th 2006 12:51PM
Damn, they need to release a CDMA version with Verizon so I can eBay this Q.

arichar1:
I have the pearl and it has support for viewing certain documents. As for editing ms office docs, you can download programs easily to do that. And VNC.... there is an opensource program I am using and it works fine, i think it may be called jVNC, j for java. something like that, its pretty freakin sweet.

I was at a seminar at the Sprint campus last week and we had a meeting with RIM. We prodded them for info on a quad-band Sprint Blackberry and he let this info spill. Before he could get too far his managers shut him up, though.

With specs like these, this BlackBerry is trying to clone a Nokia E61 without the 3G functions but adding a camera. Doesn't it look awfully close to the Palm Treo 750/680? I guess we can call it a "Palm-killer"?
Maurice B @ Oct 6th 2006 12:06PM
If this was coming out before the 8525, I probably buy it instead. I'm really tired of waiting around for these new models to come out.
brian @ Oct 7th 2006 10:51AM
it is possible that this could be a palm-killer. After reading this article, i will sell my 700p in a heartbeat if this comes out on sprint next year.
the only thing that held me back from getting the blackberry 8703e was the lack of expandible memory, camera, and camcorder. the treo did that but as i depended on email more and more, i realized that i needed a blackberry but did not want to give up those other features.
another thing that bothers me is that i wanted the blackberry 8703e, but I HAVE TO GET MINUTES WITH THE BLACKBERRY PLAN. i am more then willing to pay just 40/month for blackberry service. tmobile and nextel offer just the blackberry unlimited with no need to add minutes. why not you sprint, why not you???

I have the Pearl and I've been super happy with it. The 1.3MP camera may not be super but it does a pretty good job. Few camera phones will ever replace a good high DSLR so why really try? Downside is more pixels ups the storage requirements. As it is, it has a nice balance. It should be able to record video at some point with a software upgrade.
Rest of the device is sweet. I gave up my PDA a long time ago to go with BlackBerry as it does the core needs I have better than anything else. I had an awesome VGA screen PDA but it wasn't as usable day in and out as my BB. I couldn't see going with one of the big/wide BB's either. Just like the Treo it was like holding a brick up to my ear. I bought the 7100 to start with when it came out.
I upgraded to the Pearl and I really couldn't ask for much more. A bigger screen would be nice for maps but then I am back to the brick size. As is the screen is incredibly bright and sharp. Mp3 work well and so do vids. I have a phone/pda that doesn't require a huge holster to carry it and it is very unobtrusive. It is high tech without screaming geek. Only thing I'd really ask for a 2.1MP camera for decent 5x7 prints and possibly WiFi but WiFi isn't so critical as I don't plan on doing a lot of browsing on the small screen. I'd want it most for when I travel to Europe as data via the phone is absurdly expensive; $15/MB!
The 8800 is nice but too big for most of my usage.

Hold out #1, hold out. That is what I am going to do. Hopefully sprint will have it!!! Dont want to lose free incoming and discount
