[Thanks, anonymous tipster]
Introducing T-Mobile Dash
The exclusive T-Mobile Dash is a sleek Smartphone with a full QWERTY keyboard that brings e-mail and familiar Outlook right to your phone. Using Microsoft Office Outlook Mobile ®, T-Mobile Dash delivers important information and e-mail on the go. Now you can have your Outlook calendar and contacts up to date and always with you. Easily check e-mail and access Internet information virtually anywhere with T-Mobile's EDGE network or blazing fast T-Mobile HotSpot wireless broadband. As a bonus, T-Mobile Dash supports myFaves rate plans, which allow customers to choose their top 5 contacts and make or receive unlimited phone calls for one low price.
Availability
T-Mobile Dash launches in all markets on October 16th 2006.
Audience
The T-Mobile Dash is an excellent choice for family-focused working individuals who are trying to master a busy life. They do a lot of personal and work e-mail from their computer and desire a way of doing this e-mail and using Outlook from a mobile phone. They are brand-conscious, tech-savvy individuals who rely on various organizational tools (phone, PDA, home calendar, home/work computer, etc.). They've thought of making the transition to a "converged device," but worry that these devices may be too bulky, too difficult to use or too focused on business applications to meet their personal needs.
Key Selling Points
• Sleek Device
Sleek Smartphone with a full keyboard
• Familiar and Easy-To-Use Messaging Options
T-Mobile Dash has the most familiar communication and organization features (personal e-mail and Outlook), plus the ability to share and view pictures, video, and other large attachments.
• Best Value Data Plan, including high speed Wi-Fi
UNLIMITED access to e-mail, Internet and T-Mobile HotSpot Wi-Fi service on T-Mobile's powerful nationwide data network for $29.99/month when added to a T-Mobile voice plan.
Key Sales Considerations
• Perfect handset for customers who want the convenience and access of a Smartphone without the bulk of a converged device like the MDA, and who don't need or want the ability to edit e-mail attachments or use character recognition.
• To get the most out of the T-Mobile Dash, use the T-Mobile Total Internet Plan for general GPRS and Wi-Fi data service.
• Using the T-Mobile Dash with myFaves requires the separate myFaves plan.

"not to look a gift horse in the mouth (whatever that means)"
...refers to looking at a horse's teeth to approximate its age, thus, when someone gives you a gift, you just take it and be thankful.

Any word on getting an unlocked version?
Soire @ Sep 27th 2006 4:37PM
For once, I'm thankful to be a T-Mobile customer.
C'mon October 16th!!!
Creon @ Sep 27th 2006 4:55PM
I'm holding off on getting a new phone until I try it out vs. the Pearl, so I hope this phone fulfills its potential. The idea of a Q with Wi-Fi is very enticing. Anyone care to compare them?
phi @ Sep 27th 2006 5:20PM
looks like there's no JOGGR function.
chopps @ Sep 27th 2006 6:52PM
dooode.. Sprint phones blow
a99tandem @ Sep 27th 2006 7:33PM
The joggr is only used for volume. It is not neary as sensitive as you expect. It is merely a matter of adding the proper software to enable joggr tho. I got a Dash yesterday at a training event and I'm loving it! Push email, exchange sync, and global address support. This phone is a 1 1/2 thumbs up. Why 1 1/2? 1.3 MP cam kinda sux.
T-Will @ Sep 27th 2006 9:09PM
Ooohh I'm excited now!!!
How's the keyboard, I read another review comparing it to the Q and Samsung i320 and it got the lowest rating of the 3.

Any word on pricing?

Looking a gift horse in the mouth" refers to the (a giant wooden)"Trojan Horse" that was delivered as a gift, that just happened to be filled with soldiers who'd been trying to infultrate a city that was protected by walls. When the resident military opened the "gift horse's mouth", soldiers came spewing out and masacred the city.
Cody Bruce @ Sep 28th 2006 12:14AM
I can't wait! After my Treo's screen broke, I purchased a Sony p990i. The p990i is an incredibly bad smartphone. I can't wait until the Dash comes out...
The Craig @ Sep 28th 2006 1:35PM
J Sheltered, you are an idiot! Read your history and see how the Trojan Horse was actually used. The military didn't open the "gift-horse's mouth" The Greek military escaped through a trapdoor in the belly of the horse. The first post had the correct definition of the proverb. Next time do some research before posting on a public site!
P.S. The Dash rules!!! it is everything that the Q is and much more. Suck on that Verizon!
Creon @ Sep 28th 2006 6:06PM
A quick googling says:
"As horses age their teeth begin to project further forward each year and so their age can be estimated by checking how prominent the teeth are. This incidentally is also the source of another teeth/age related phrase - long in the tooth.
The advice given in the 'don't look...' proverb is: when given a present, be grateful for your good fortune and don't look for more by examining it to assess its value."

In reply to Creon the blackberry pearl has some pro's and con's.Pro's being that it is the first blackberry released that doesn't have the side trackwheel and has been replaced with the front trackball.Which makes for much easier navigation. The menu setup is much better than the older blackberries. The con's is the 1.3 camera is ehh. It isn't as durable as rim's previous models either. The auto text it comes with is horrible!! Not very user friendly. Looking foward to seeing if T-Mobile can pull off the Dash.

Any idea what type of removable storage card this thing takes? I've settled on SD cards for most of my devices, and even with an adapter I don't want to change formats. As long as the interface is snappy and the keyboard feels right, this looks like my next upgrade from a Treo 650.
digifreak wannabe @ Sep 29th 2006 10:41AM
To anyone who's already gotten this thing and has played around with it, can you tell me how the battery life is and the call volume? Oh yeah, and how does it stack up against a BB 8700?
Harry @ Sep 30th 2006 8:09PM
IMO, the scrreen's too small. On top of that, look at the sceen closely. There are three rows of icon/menu bars. Two rows on top, one on the bottom. Now look at how much useable screen real estate there is. It's just not enough.
Dave @ Oct 1st 2006 4:55PM
Does anyone know if the dash will support the A2dp Bluetooth stack (this is the one that alows you to listen using stereo bluetooth headsets). I have the SDA and this was an issue.
Alex @ Oct 2nd 2006 1:25PM
does anyone know if this is an MS Smartphone or MS Pocket PC device? I want touchscreen!
T-Will @ Oct 2nd 2006 5:48PM
Reply to #18
It's Smartphone. No touch screen.
Ariel @ Oct 2nd 2006 10:46PM
I'm down come Oct. 16! Although I would like to see a side by side comp with the 750v. I am an MDA user and to be honest the touch screen business is more of a novelty. I have sent back one due to malfunction, mislignment is a common problem, and the stylus would better serve as an ink pen. I am eager to move to a side scrolling mechanism - like the touch scroll on the side of this bad boy. Screen seems a bit small but its a small drawback for fashion over some function. They could have put up more juice than the 200 Mhz processor...at least battery life will benefit here. HTC For life!!
Gabriel @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:15PM
o yeah and one more thing
this site is a little off on how much it is a month to get the service.
Gabriel @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:15PM
So Ive already had my hands on it.......VOLUME IS LOUD
why in all caps, because thats how lound you can get it. and this picture really doesnt do the phone justice. the screen is bigger then it seems but yes the phone still is small in a very good way
TTiNTiN @ Oct 3rd 2006 3:12PM
To #22: Gabriel, thanks for sharing your thoughts. Have you ever used a Motorola Q? I'm curious to know how this little baby compares to the Q. From the Boy Genius reports, it seems to trump the Q in every way. Also, do you know if the T-Mobile branding disables any functions of the phone (like evil Verizon)?
King Phil @ Oct 8th 2006 7:50PM
can you use your mp3 songs as ringtones? and can you listen to your mp3 songs while browsing the web?
ash @ Oct 10th 2006 7:12PM
just wanted to know if anyone knew the dimensions of the phone? smaller and thinner than blackberry pearl i hope? didn't see anything about the dimensions. AWAITING october 16th to come. everyone and their mommys have blackberry pearl, cant wait!!!
James @ Oct 11th 2006 10:04PM
T-Mobiles Web Site says Oct. 25th is the release date.
So it sounds like a delay. Can't wait to see this thing in person to see how it compares to the "Q" and the Pearl.
SoLavish @ Oct 27th 2006 2:51AM
Can you use your mp3 (songs) as ringtones?
Justin @ Nov 22nd 2006 12:30AM
I got my dash the morning it was released and love it I went from a t1705 blackberry which was very bulky. I looked at the perl my friend has it an loves it, I then saw the dash and said thats what i want.
The navigation is a little painfull at times I seem to forget were stuff is located, but its mainly becuse I don't mess with it as much, the e-mail is awsome, the edge is really fast depending on location, and the wifi is really cool, I have my own wireless network.
only thing i don't like is the ring tone selection WTF, and you can't DL any from the t-mobile site the newest phone does not support hifi ringer D/L nots not right...
Ed Russell @ Dec 22nd 2006 5:05PM
I bought the Dash a week ago. I can't select any of the ringtones that I have downloaded from the internet. It seems like I should be able to load any mp3 or wav file as a ringtone. Does anyone know how to make my downloaded clips show up in the ringtone selection screen?
I love the little argument about the gift horse proverb. Very entertaining. LOL
christi @ Dec 29th 2006 1:25AM
I am having the same problem trying to create a ringtone on the Dash. I don't know how to clip the songs I do have though... How did u do it Ed??
Sam @ Dec 30th 2006 3:56PM
For ringtones you are going to need a program to clip the files, which could be whatever you can find that actually works. I still use my old program that I used for my Nextel i870 which is mobileaction. I just clip which part of the song I want, open active sync and windows media player 11, locate the file and sync it to my phone. After syncing it I locate the file and COPY AND PASTE it to my SOUNDS FILE but the information below will help anyone who needs help with mp3 ringtones.
Anyway, one day I was wondering about the mp3 ringtones as well, so I called customer service about the Dash. Customer Service explained to me that all you have to do is take the clips you have on your phone and COPY AND PASTE THEM to your SOUNDS FILE which is located in MY DEVICE. So first locate the file you want to assign as a ringtone and COPY this file. After doing so open FILE EXPLORER and right click(click on the key above the arroy pointing to the left) and scroll through the list of options until you get to MY DEVICE(at the bottom). Open MY DEVICE and select APPLICATION DATA, after opening this file you will see a list of other files. For example: HOME, MICROSOFT, PROFILES, SOUNDS, and VOLATILE. Open sounds and right click and scroll to the PASTE option. After you have done all of this the file you have selected will be added to the list of ringtones along with the default ringtones that came with the phone. To check if you have done it right just click start, go to settings and click sounds.. it should be with the other ringtones.
Now for those who want to have special ringers such as, having to girlfriend, mom, dad, brother and ect. as a ringtone you can do this as well. Just click start and scroll down to ACCESSORIES, in the ACCESSORIES file click voice recorder. Simply record your voice and when you are done right click on MENU and set it as a ringtone. The recordings are VERY CLEAR and damn near mp3 quality. You can record ringtones this way as well if you want but they sound just a TAD BIT better as original clips.
